Clockwork Man

Quote from Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep“An android,” he said, “doesn’t care what happens to another android. That’s one of the indications we look for."

“Then,” Miss Luft said, “you must be an android.”

"Welcome to The Clockwork Detective Agency! Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime- heinous murder, theft, and tweed coats! Dressed in our dazzling colours of grey and beige, you'll meander around an office full of boredom and the sheer unrelenting agony known as a broken coffee machine."

Detective Jace Mawer clapped her hands gleefully together.

"Your tasks will include paperwork, more paperwork, and crying over the deadlines of paperwork, imposed by our robotaid overlords. You have no free will in this matter. If you felt like it, you could even say that this place will turn you into an android! An office one. Haha."

Dead silence answered her. She was not deterred, but instead went on, "So prepare yourself for the adventure of a lifetime! I'm sure things will spice up soon. And when it does, we're here to pick up the pieces for you." She smirked. "Pick up the pieces... that were you, that is. Try and keep yourselves together, kiddins. There's only so many internees-mysteriously-disappearing cases that we can file under 'unsolved' before they start getting suspicious. I’m not expecting miracles, but if you can keep that number at two or three, then it’d be very helpful.”

The silence somehow got louder. Was that even possible? Louder silence? She seemed determined to make it happen.

“Anyway! Thanks for coming to Trainee Initiaion! Orientation starts at 7, same location. And remember, call me Nora!”

She waved and whooped as if she were a rock star. An intern in the back was crying. “Have a great day!”

Narcisse Michon

Ah. Jace Mawer, crazy extraordinaire. Nora. Narcisse barely withheld a sneer. Of course the higher ups gave that fool the initiation speech.

Looking around, he could already pick out the bewildered expressions of the interns. He might've pitied their fear and confusion. But they weren't here to be loved or parented. Hardly. They were here to get a few extra course credits. Advance their portfolios so they could go on and be doctors and lawyers and stop rotting at the bottom of society.

He nearly scoffed.

So much for human superiority. What's your empathy doing for you now? Sure you can cry at Old Age movies, and feel bad when a puppy slips and cracks its fool head open in a sewer drain. Good for you. You'll still end up rotting in the slums.

Very few humans these days had any money at all. They tended to project those inane dreams onto their kids. Childish adults, raising childish children.

None of them would make it. He could tell just looking at the lot. Maybe the few who had some enhancements done to their brains... but then, could they really be called human?

No... no, that was a dangerous train of thought. A slippery slope of morality. He shouldn't get sidetracked onto it.

"Mister... Mister Head Detective?"

Niwa. His eyebrow twitched. He wished to be anywhere else in the world at that exact moment. "Yes, Detective?" He braced himself. "I hope you have a good reason for bothering me." He spun to face the shrimpy kid and levelled him with an unimpressed stare.

Niwa shrivelled. "It's... it's just that..."

"What? Speak clearly."

"We need you for orientation... the Head Detectives are supposed to..."

"I am aware."

"Oh..." Niwa wrung his hands out. "It's just that- it's supposed to start soon and the others were all gathering... and..."

Narcisse checked his watch. "The orientation is at 7 o'clock, is it not? I imagine that my presence will not be needed until then. I was hoping to have dinner, beforehand."

The kid looked like a kicked puppy. Narcisse might've felt bad, but honestly? He had it coming. Imagine, trying to teach the Head Detective how to do their job. The nerve. You aren't me, kid, and with the way this is going, I doubt you ever will be.

"I was just... trying to be helpful."

"Aw, give 'im a break, Narcisse." Detective Mawer grinned at him, popping up out of thin air as per usual. "Ya' don't need to go so hard on him. He's just a kid, you know."

Niwa's eyes had lit up at her approach, but at her words, the light died and he started shrinking in on himself.

Narcisse was well aware of the baby Detective's puppy crush on her. Ever since he came to the agency, Niwa was following her around as if she were some holy saviour. It was pathetic, honestly. Detective Mawer didn't care for any of the interns she folded into her little group. She would drop him and give it a kick for spare measure, should she think that doing so might get her a promotion.

Detective Mawer met his gaze, a smile creeping onto her face. He was the first to break eye contact, turning to stare at the stage.

"That was interesting," he acknowledged. "What you said, about androids."

"I'm glad you think so. I had to sneak it in. My supervisors weren't so sure that it was the right way to go, but I thought that you might be particularly interested."

Supervisors, eh? That's certainly one way to put it. Narcisse allowed his lips to go up in a little smirk. "You might, very well be right."

Niwa was looking between the two of them, eyebrows furrowed.

"How about you go for now, kiddo? The grown-ups need to talk." Detective Mawer gave him a little pat on the shoulder. "The others and I are going out to the pub later- if you want, you can hit up the new assistants. This stick in the mud certainly won't try to arrange any get-togethers."

She shot Narcisse a grin. He stared back at her, wishing he could condense all the hate in his heart into a single glare.

“Okay..." Niwa said slowly. He glanced between the two of them. Narcisse got a bad feeling. "I'll just... leave the two of you alone, then?"

The bad feeling intensified.

Oh, absolutely not.

He opened his mouth to give the stupid, stupid child a piece of his mind, but Detective Mawer cut him off, "Yeah, for sure! See you later, 'kay?"

The kid nodded mutely and started backing up. He ran into some little assistant girl, who started giggling, grinning at his blushing, clearly flustered face. "Sorry, sorry, sorry..." He fled into the crowd.

Narcisse turned his glare on Detective Mawer.

She grinned back.

Good lord. He heaved an internal sigh. I am surrounded by idiots.

"What do you want?"

Andreja Buivis

Damn, boring introductory speech. She'd been sitting through wayyy too many of those lately. Grad stuff, college stuff, think about your future Andreja! Do you really want to spend the rest of your life scrawling "I had a big sh*t" in bathroom stalls?

And yes, she DID. And YES she DID zone out through that entire speech, MOM.

"Call Me Maybe" began to scream out from her pocket. Aha! A call! She fished it out to see- Grandma.

Eh.

She hit ignore and began to survey her surroundings, taking in her future coworkers. So far, they looked lame and un-policey. The old cop shows always made detectives seem cool and tough, but so far it seemed like a whole lotta nonsense.

Target acquired.

A small, terrified looking kid stood there. He had thick round glasses that he was adjusting with trembling hands, nervous brown eyes blinking behind them and darting back and forth. Clearly new.

Ooh! Fresh meat!

She made her way towards him.

Adrik Volkov

That speech certainly was... interesting. Should he be concerned? Or just...

Yeah. He adjusted his glasses and released a shaky breath. Maybe he should go home and rest for a few hours. He didn't have to worry about orientation until 7:00. He could take the time to prepare himself mentally. This whole thing was starting to feel like a mistake.

"Hey, kid!" A head popped up in the crowd.

He pointed to himself and mouthed me?.

"Yeah, you!" she yelled. "I wanna talk to you!"

His mouth opened in an "o", and suddenly she was right in his face. "You look kinda cute like that," she said cheerfully. "Like an owl." She tapped the bridge of her nose.

"My er- glasses?"

"Yeah, your glasses make you look adorable." She nodded. "And that expression on your face. Kinda dumb, but in a loveable way."

She grinned. Staring into her shining white teeth, the canines of which seemed unnervingly sharp, he... he gulped.

Why did he get the sense that she wanted to eat him alive???

It was hard for Jing Yu not to bend over and immediately start laughing his whole intestines out. So the best he could to was ignore the lasering glare from a so-and-so head detective, and wipe a stray tear off from the corner of his eye as he let out a stray chuckle.

"Man.. If we keep up like this, you're just gonna scare away those interns I tell ya Head Detective! Don't ya agree Old Mawer?" Jing Yu joked, lightening up the atmosphere of the room.

Despite there only being a 3 year difference between he and Jace Mawer, he only does that to piss the other off for fun. It was entertaining to see some new reactions when everyday, all you see is blank, tired old eyes glancing at paperwork no matter where you look.

"I swear, I thought I was gonna die with how stiff the air is! Are all head detectives this stiff Narcisse?"

Jing Yu complained as he fluidly inserted himself into the twos conversation. This is what he is good at afterall. Surprise, surprise! Not all social workers at the agency are bad at socializing.

Narcisse Michon

"I don't recall ever inviting you to our important discussion. What do you want, brat?"

He stared down the little detective, doing his best to put all his pent up Mawer-inspired rage into his glare. Get lost, he mouthed at him. This doesn't involve you.

"Call me Nora, Yu-Yu!" Detective Mawer said cheerfully, ever upbeat. "You gonna help us supervise the internees later? I imagine your old and creaky bones might be too weak to take all that youthful energy and modern pop culture. It's alright if you gotta back out."

She winked at Detective Yu. Narcisse felt a headache coming on.

"Your strange sense of humour continues to confound me." He ran a hand through his hair, trying to smooth out the curls. It was exhausting, dealing with Detective Mawer. He wasn't sure why he even bothered to try at this point. "Get to the point, please."

Jing Yu dramatically gasps, completely ignoring the Head Detective for moment for totally not petty reasons, "Well i'm sure my old creaking bones are sure plentiful younger than yours Old Nora " He grins playfully at Detective Mawer as he rebuked.

"If my memory serves me correctly, which it usually does, you still have those antique television from the old days in your living don't ya? If anything, you should be the one worrying if you could keep up with the trends ay?"

Finally, as if he just now suddenly remember that Head Detective Narcisse was still in the conversation, Jing Yu turns his head towards him.

"Ah Head Detective! I wouldn't per say that I am that young that you could call me brat, but then again! The Elderly do have the bad habit of considering anyone younger than them below them do they?" Jing Yu lightly scratched his cheek in embarrassment.

This guy is creating some drama again.

Cadence Laurier's POV

Cadence Laurier was not alarmed at the idea of the ways of the agency. She was used to them by now, and this was the sort of work she EXCELLED in. That very morning she had woken up at 4AM exactly, the time she always woke up at. In that time she had attended to every necessary matter in terms of her appearance, and extensively looked through and filled out various paperwork. And now she found herself once again within these same hallowed halls that she had grown so used to.

She eyed the little Junior Detective Niwa as he scurried off and rolled her eyes. Those young detectives. Always think they're above their pay grade. Someone should really teach him his place.

All the same… oh, what the hell was she thinking? Michon was right, he was a waste of time. Maybe he'd make something of himself someday, but in the meantime, he was nothing but a stray dog. A mongrel.

"Always those children, huh?" she tsked.

Oh. Now there was someone else acting out.

"Is there anything wrong with a Head Detective being… serious?" She clicked her tongue. "Michon is just doing his job. Can you say the same?"

Eloi Torres's POV

Eloi fidgeted nervously and adjusted his clothing. He was a wreck, as usual. Just make it through today, just make it through today… everything will be okay.

They said some kind of saying about stuff getting easier with time, but the poor lad really wasn't feeling that. People made him nervous. Work made him nervous. Life made him nervous. Everything made him nervous.

Especially that speech that was given. Well… he'd get through this. Hopefully. Despite being clumsy, stupid, awkward, and hopelessly unskilled. The big question was how his roleplayer hadn't chosen him to be a janitor, although he'd probably mess that up too.

He saw that one of his fellow detectives had been given a hard time by their superiors. He… couldn't help but feel bad. Was he okay? Eloi didn't know if it was a good idea or not, but… he felt the need to approach Niwa.

Awkwardly, he sidled up to him. "H-Hi. Niwa, right? Are… are… you okay? I just, um, thought I should ask, I'm… sorry that happened…" He trailed off. Wait. Had he been supposed to overhear that or?! "I- I mean, I thought I heard, well-" God. Talking was hard.

"Sorry. Never mind. Ummm… y-you okay?"

Laurence Walton's POV

Hm. Most curious. Work, work, and more work. Was that supposed to intimidate him? Laurence was a serious person. He had always been serious. And he would remain serious until his eventual death.
The other interns looked shaken. What, had they been planning on dilly-dallying? Did they think this was some sort of party? A vacation, perhaps? Was he the only one taking this seriously?

He noticed that someone else who was presumably another intern was seemingly getting harassed, or at the very least, somewhat bothered by somebody. He raised his eyebrows. Should I maybe do something about that? It wasn't like he had any reason to care.

But they were mocking… his glasses. Glasses. Of all things.

"Pardon me. You do know he wouldn't be capable of seeing without those, don't you? Bold of you to condescend him."

It wasn't like he cared. But it was literally so irrational he had to comment on it.

Jace Mawer (Nora)

"Charmed." She flashed a grin at him. "I suppose I am rather elderly then, darling. But you'll support this old gal through retirement, wontcha? It's just a few hundred dollars a month. You wouldn't let this poor dear grandmother down, riiiiiight?"

She noticed one of the head detectives emerging from the side room. Dear Cadence Laurier, in all her spiteful glory. She'd just made up her mind to ignore her, when the lady started spitting her venom.

"Oh! The puppy bares its teeth." Nora tipped her head to the side with a smile. "What might you be doing here?"

Adrik Volkov

Adrik jumped. Another intern? And coming to his defense? That was... A smile slowly started to spread across his face.

"Aww, what do you know." The girl rolled her eyes. "Yes I'm aware of how glasses work. Who even are you? Another smart guy? Some big shot detective, getting too big for his britches?"

Niwa Atsushi

"Okay?" Niwa echoed. Was he okay? Yeah, he supposed, he was. "Yeah, I didn't fall or anything. Thanks though. I can be kinda clumsy sometimes."

He ran a hand through his hair and laughed a little too long. He shut his mouth and ducked his head. When he spoke again, it was barely more than a mumble.

"Are you okay? You seem kinda nervous... not that I can really say anything... I'm kinda scared myself." He lifted his head slightly; barely met the other kids' eyes, then ducked again. "It's just my first year as a detective. You know how it is..."

Cadence Laurier's POV

Cadence raised an eyebrow, and did her best to force herself not to beat Mawer into the floor, deciding to instead cross her arms to restrain her hands. "Oh, Mawer. I was just on my way to do my duties. And then I came across Junior here calling his superior 'too serious'."

Which was hardly a problem. The idea almost made her roll her eyes again. The other detective clearly had a stick up her-- whatever, as usual. "If my presence is not required any longer, then I will be off."

Laurence Walton's POV

Oh, wow. She was making him regret it. How expected.

"Aww, what do you know. Yes I'm aware of how glasses work. Who even are you? Another smart guy? Some big shot detective, getting too big for his britches?"

He visibly stiffened, puffing his chest out like some sort of large bird. "I'm just saying, a little ridiculous to condescend someone based off something like that, don't you think? My name is Laurence Walton, one of the interns training at this fine institute. And who might you be?"

He half-snorted at her snarky comment. Big shot detective, pssh. Oh, he definitely knew what he was doing though. He'd show her he belonged here.

Eloi Torres's POV

"Okay? Yeah, I didn't fall or anything. Thanks though. I can be kinda clumsy sometimes."

Eloi perked up at that. "Yeah, I... get what you mean. Some of the people here are so stiff a-and- sophisticated!! Well, I mean- I don't mean that as anything against them! But... they just... totally know what they're doing. And it's like- wow! Um, sorry. Got off-topic, um... yeah. You're... welcome."

Congratulations, Eloi. You're fudging things up as usual. Hmm, fudge. A brick of thst would be nice right now. How did they make fudge again? Wait, did he ever know how to?

Poor guy seemed like a wreck as well, the way he adjusted himself and laughed like that... was he okay?

"Are you okay? You seem kinda nervous... not that I can really say anything... I'm kinda scared myself. It's just my first year as a detective. You know how it is..."

As the other slightly met his eyes, Eloi felt a little antsy about it, and he too started to avoid eye contact. He could barely make out what he was saying, but...

"Well, um... s-sorry. I'm kinda--" He pawed and pinched at and fiddled with the fabric of his clothes nervously. "I'm kinda... always nervous... you know? E-Everything's so... nerve-wracking." He let out a deep exhale. "How does everyone else do it? I really don't get it... I'm- umm... I'm... I'm alright. I-I think."

Sawyer Laurens's POV

A fluffy eager bundle of joy had entered the building. Sawyer didn't get why all the boring work stuff sounded so bad, who wouldn't want to be like androids?! Androids were COOL!! They couldn't wait to solve even more cases!! Who knew what fascinating details would be available?

They skulked about, noticing there were multiple conversations they weren't currently a part of. They wondered if they should eavesdrop or join in. Still, hmmmmmmmmmmm, eavesdropping wasn't considered socially acceptable... hmmmmmm. Hmhmhm. What a fun noise hm was. Sawyer would seriously have to try learning the ocarina.

While they puzzled over the dilemma of obtaining various instruments, they realized they should probably get to work in order to please the robotic overlords. But there were SO MANY INTERESTING CONVERSATIONS GOING ON!! And that left them in a state of massive indecision.

Cali Mabey's POV

What in the...? Had he just heard his name coming from someone's ringtone? Cali spotted a few people... two of them looked more youthful, probably interns... speaking amongst themselves, about something. Oh dear. He should probably just get to his work.

He didn't want to interrupt, or to eavesdrop... but they looked possibly troubled. And he couldn't not help someone in need!! He decided to listen in and see what he could gauge about the conversation.

Suzume Fujimori's POV

The young woman was already hard at work, analyzing evidence of previous cases. How deeply fascinating. Hair, dust, dirt, footprints, fingerprints, chemicals... oh, all the different marks that could be left on a crime scene. So truly, so deeply fascinating. She took pride in this work that she did so thoroughly.

If only she was the only one working on this. Sadly, there were other Forensic Analysts. Suzume would be perfectly content working on it completely alone... still, it couldn't hurt to receive their feedback at the same time. She supposed.

But this... this was enough for her. It was all so interesting on its own. Who needed people, to make your life complete?

Celine Noëlle’s POV

Celine’s eyes lit up immediately. Paperwork? She loved paperwork. Every document on her desk found its place in a perfectly arranged array, and each line she penned exuded a deliberate accuracy. No matter who it was, her colleagues or clients never failed to marvel at the flawlessness of her reports, as Celine's commitment to precision became a hallmark of her professional reputation. In the bustling offices where chaos often reigned, Celine stood out as a paragon of order and precision, an ever sturdy pen and a bright mind full of fresh yet organized ideas.

Her approach to documentation was akin to crafting a delicate piece of art. Each stroke of her pen was purposeful, forming letters with an unwavering consistency. She scrutinized every figure and cross-referenced details with an almost obsessive attention to accuracy. Colossal spreadsheets and complex reports were tackled with a methodical grace that turned the most daunting tasks into a ballet of meticulousness.

Her commitment to precision was not just a personal quirk but a professional asset. Highly sought out for projects that demanded an exacting eye, Celine would never fail to deliver outcomes that were not only error-free but also infused with a level of detail that set a new standard within the organization. Where she lacked in time management, she made up for in the sheer flawlessness of her work.

Yet, beneath the surface of this precision-driven exterior, Celine was more than a walking calculator. She possessed a profound understanding of the importance of her work, realizing that the accuracy of her paperwork had a ripple effect on the entire team's efficiency. Her attention to detail wasn't just about perfection for its own sake; it was a commitment to ensuring the smooth functioning of the intricate machinery that kept the office running.

While some might view her meticulous nature as bordering on the obsessive, others recognized the value she brought to the workplace. Celine, with her pens, folders, and spreadsheets, had become an indispensable cornerstone of the office's operational integrity, transforming paperwork from a mundane task into an art form of precision and reliability.

And with that, she plopped down onto the floor, got into a comfortable position and pulled out a stack of papers, checking them through thoroughly, tuning out whatever silly arguments those around her were having. Or whatever it was they were talking to each other about.

Andrea A Kaminsky’s POV

Casually observing the crowd over the glass of red wine? blood? in her hand, Andrea’s gaze was sharp and piercing, boring into your soul should you accidentally (or deliberately) make eye contact with her. She cradled the delicate wine glass between her fingers, the deep red liquid swirling within. With each sip, she savored the rich flavor, her posture exuding an undeniable haughtiness. The subtle tilt of her head and the way her eyes gleamed over the rim of the glass spoke of a connoisseur reveling in the exquisite taste, making even the simple act of drinking red wine a display of elegance and refinement. Her gaze was at best dismissive, yet cold and calculating. Glaring at a daring trainee, Andrea sent said boy scampering away in fear, lips parted in a snarl as she flashed a set of teeth too sharp to be normal at him.

ZhaoXi was sipping tea in a corner at the far side of the room. She had avoided the crowds and had found, finally, a peaceful and quiet spot. ZhaoXi had already seen some of her colleagues, but had no strong desire to greet. There should be 4 of them in the Forensics department. That should be interesting, but ZhaoXi would much rather not be socialising.

She took another sip of her tea.

While ZhaoXi did not want to talk to anyone, she supposed that she didn’t have any choice, sometime later, she promised herself, I’ll do that later. And took another sip of tea.

Kit rolled her eyes and shoved her hands into her pockets. Not exactly an appealing introductory speech, detective. The interns will no doubt have already started to regret stepping foot in the agency, or if not, they will soon. She just reminded the staff of their eternal service to paperwork and their dull flat lives, until something of interest occurs.

Watching the detectives, Kit hoped that something intriguing would spark. After all, you could only be young for a while, eh?

Narcisse Michon

"Stay," Narcisse interjected. He gave Laurier a grateful nod. Thank you, he mouthed.

It was never easy dealing with the idiot brigade. Every time they showed their faces, they made a mess of things and a headache for him. Already he was expecting a fresh load of paperwork from this interaction. He wasn't sure how, but he figured that if anyone could figure that out, it'd be Detective Mawer.

After all, her whole life's purpose seemed to be to cause him pain. He had learned never to underestimate her power for creating chaos (or insurance claims).

Detective Mawer smiled at him, as though she somehow knew what he was thinking. "He might not be my senior for much longer. After all, there's been talk of a promotion for me. The ceremony tonight might just be the start of my increased responsibility."

And if it is, God help us all.

"Laurier, would you like to accompany me to dinner?" He checked his watch. "The orientation will begin at 7... we still have an hour to catch a meal."

"Ah, that marks the end of that," Detective Mawer said ruefully. She turned to Detective Yu. "Hey, Yu-Yu! Wanna hit some fast food with me? These bores are probably going to some expensive ass authentic restaurant, but I figured you'd understand the importance of the fried maybe-chicken to a human's diet."

She winked. Narcisse twitched. Oh, her face was such a nice target... so close... the urge to murder was growing irresistible...

Niwa Atsushi

Oh he's very nervous.

Niwa curiously watched the twitches of the others' face. His own moved to replicate it. "Y-You... you don't need to apologise... or qualify your statement or whatever else you're trying to do."

He twisted a strand of hair around his finger.

"It's honestly... fine. There's no real need to worry, y'know?"

Adrik Volkov

"An intern?" The girl guffawed. She laughed and kept on laughing as if she were in a fit, tipping back her head to cackle at the ceiling. Adrik tried to subtly sneak behind the other intern, and the girl noticed. Her laughter cut off and suddenly she was staring at him, her face completely expressionless. "What is this, Kindergarten? You trying to hide behind mommy's skirt? Scared of big bad Andreja?"

There was an unpleasant note to her voice. Something lilting and singsong. As though she were mocking them. Which she probably was.

Dear God. Please immediately make me a paperclip, or a toothbrush, or some other inane household item that can go hide in a drawer somewhere. Forever.

"Is that your name?" he asked timidly. He nearly flinched when her cold eyes connected with his. "An...Andreja?"

Emmy stared there in silence, taking deep breaths. This should be easy..I’m a Janitor! It’ll be easy..All I do is clean, right? she thought.

She looked around for a broom, mop, or any cleaning supplies.
Do we get cleaning supplies or something?? she thought.

She saw someone, "Hey! Do you know where the cleaning supplies are?" She asked. Emmy was panicking, was she supposed to buy her own cleaning supplies?

She scoffed, "Am I supposed to be scared?"

She rolled her eyes and started getting to work.

Macy Pewt

We're all gonna die, doodly doo~

Macy whistled an old sea shanty she'd picked up gods-know-when. She was far from the most experienced person here, but even she could swear that speech got more condescending every year. She paused and strode over to Jace.

"Sounds like you rehearsed that more than a few times, Nora."

What are you doing, moron?

Buraddo Jemu

"And that expression on your face. Kinda dumb, but in a loveable way."

Hand on the cool metal knob, Buraddo paused. As appealing as a coffee run sounded right now, it'd have to be a minute. With an impulsive pivot, they made their way over.

"I know you're 11 years and a few positions my inferior," They knew they sounded like a jerk before the words came out, but it felt deserved. "but this seems below you, Buivis."

With the impulsivity drained, they realised maybe they shouldn't have just barged in. Unfortunately it was too late now, so they kept their composure.

Jing Yu slung his arms over Detective Mawer's shoulder with a shit-eating grin. "You mean those sad fries? I swear those things are outa the world! Now that we are talkin about those good ol' days, you wouldn't believe what I just witness a few days ago!"

Whisper-yelling like he was telling a grand story, Jing Yu paused to add suspense, once again, ignoring the deathly gaze across from him.

"..I was just grabbing a quick bite at my favorite place a couple street down minding my own business! I swear! Then a small cute recycle bot suddenly beeped at me! Saying that human shouldn't be eating pure fat, and that it's bad for health and the heart, and that I might suffer from heart disease if I keep on eating it yadayada, and stuff like that! Like what does it want me to do? Become vegan from now on?" Jing Yu smacked his hand on his chest, clearly he was very immersed in retelling his 'interesting' tale. His cheeks flushed from how passionate he was about this subject.

But he it wasn't as if he was wrong! If there isn't any fat in fast foods, then what's the point?! Jing Yu pouted angrily.

-Angelo was simply minding his own business, mainly because he had no idea what everyone else was doing. After all, he had no clue what everyone else was interested in. So he swept the halls, just like he was meant to.

-Casually, he started to listen to a playlist he made recently. He quietly hums along, looking around every now and then trying to keep an eye out for anything out of place. Of course, nothing caught his eye. Nothing ever did in this building. "Gosh dangit, why do I still work here?' He thinks to himself, mumbling it under his breath. He just knew that he could be doing something more useful, if he could get the talents.-

-As his day went on, he tried not to get in the way of anyone, especially those interns- who knows what kind of teen angst they may have at the ready to fire at him. He had no idea what bull they can pull on him at any given moment. It would be rather embarrassing if they did beat him in some form of a battle of wits.-

Abryn Soelare

Ah, what a time to be alive. A gathering! At 7! A meeting! With a bunch of people he already knew!

God it was too early for this. Too early in the morning or too early for a drink, the writer did not know. Oh well, sucks to be him. Lovely speech by the way, round of applause. Truly the greeting of a generation. Ah who was he kidding, it was Mawer, couldn't expect anything else from them.

Abryn had made his place at a lone chair, watching the chaos from beyond. Now, normally he was quite the greeter, always one of the first faces people saw in their day whether they liked it or not. But today...

Eh...

Let's just say he was a little grumpy today. He woke up to immediately receiving the consequences of his actions, and by that I mean sleeping in a slightly different position than what his body comfortably allowed. Not only that, he somehow made his coffee wrong this morning. Oh whoopsies, accidentally dumped orange juice in there instead of creamer! Don't ask how that happened, he couldn't tell you.

Even with his grumpiness, he still showed up today, totally not because he had to. Sure he might not be one of the major, fancy schmancy faces of the agency simply making calls and filing papers, but I guess his job was pretty important, or whatever. Important enough for people to know his name, important enough to get occasional glances while he sat alone like a loser.

Some of those glances turned into glares, looks of disgust from the newbies, some were bewildered. Overall, not many of the looks were normal. At least, not much from the newcomers. Those that had been here for a while didn't give him much trouble, honestly, they were used to him by now. Respected his work and all that, I guess.

Why do I care?

Right. Why did he care? They were just looks. Just looks, nothing more, nothing less.

Cassidy Louvin

Woah.

There sure were a lot of people here. Cass never got used to it, but that's alright! It was the kind of thing that awed her instead of making her uneasy.

...Right?

Anyways, she found herself wandering around the small crowd. smiling like an idiot and waving to literally anyone that dared to look in her direction, or even be within her line of sight. Dropped the occasional overly cheerful greeting and flashed her toothy grin, y'know, the usual. Now, why was she so energetic? Not much was even going on, yet another orientation was later, and...

She never found anyone worth blabbering on and on about to. She was probably blind though, not looking hard enough, which wouldn't be out-of-the-ordinary for her.

On that note... Somebody finally caught her eye! It was your local vampire, or classic villainess, pick your poison. A bright red liquid swirled in their glass as they looked upon them all, scaring away any of those who dared to approach. Well well well, sounds like a challenge! Good luck scaring Cass off, uh... What was her name again? Andrea? Probably from the forensics department. Anywho, Cass was now determined to make some terrible decisions.

She put on a big warm smile, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. Cass marched on over with a wave and arrived with a giggle, totally didn't look absolutely stupid! Her eyes were still closed, with the logic of "if I don't see the scary expression, then I won't get scared!"

"Heyyy, Andrea, was it? Wooowww, how you doin? Ooh ooh, what typa suspicious beverage you got there? AB+, O-, blackberry, cranberry... Wow, the possibilities are endless! Bet the mystery adds to the edgy coolness, huh?"

All of that was amazingly stupid yet also so... Sincere. Like puppy doll eyes, but with words. Oh well, prepare to get smacked regardless, Andrea looks like a cat person anyways.

man i sure do love a low quality post because i have no clue what it is i'm supposed to be doing

Andrea A Kaminsky’s POV

A small pause, as Andrea’s sharp eyes drank in the odd sight before her, scanning this new… victim carefully. This girl sure seemed to have swallowed a lion, to date to approach her. Andrea sighed, straightening to her full height with a concerning crack of her bones, towering over Cass’ short stature. 17, and already Investigative Assistant. Impressive. A small smile crept onto her face, as Andrea husked out in a low purr “Cassidy Louvin, our young, bright mind. How may I assist you?.” With a grin that was almost predatory, she stalked closer to Cass, long red hair nearly touching Cass’ face as she leaned forward.

Hearing what she had to said, she let out a light chuckle. Andrea couldn’t help but marvel at Cass’ boldness. “Perhaps you’d like to open your eyes first? And rest assured, this is merely Cabernet Sauvignon. One of my favourites, though this one’s particularly…rich. I’d offer you some, but I’d hate to give alcohol to a minor. Come back next year, hmm? Or whenever you’re allowed to drink, I’ll save a lil something special for you.” Andrea's eyes, sharp and discerning, betrayed a calculated intent beneath the facade of friendliness, voice no more than a velvety whisper.

A well-manicured hand reached out, as if wanting to grab Cassidy, before retracting, instead tapping against the wine glass with a thoughtful rhythm “You’re interesting” Andrea commented, gaze sharp and unyielding. “And talented to” High praise coming from the rumoured insane forensic analyst.

Cassidy Louvin

“Cassidy Louvin, our young, bright mind. How may I assist you?.”

Woah. Scary.

But at the same time, so frickin cool. The tone sent shivers down Cassidy's spine, and hearing her full name added to the unexpected shock factor. Also, woah oh, confidence alert, did she just get a compliment? Sure she was a little young for the field but I mean... Y'know what, Cass, just take the compliment. Her face brightened and if her eyes were actually open, they would've sparkled.

...Why did she have them closed again? Oh yeah, to negate the scare factor that weirdly... Had the opposite effect. Well, Andrea's notion immediately flared her embarrassment as she fluttered her eyes open, only just now feeling the stupidity of her little plan. Oh well, you live and you learn. Cass's eyes soon fell upon Andrea's face, and the sight alone ended up leaving her astounded. Come on Cassidy, you're doing a really bad job at this.

"O-oh! Just wanted to say hi, y'know? Can't pass up the opportunity to chat with someone who catches your eye! Hope I'm not too much of a bother though, heh-" A little nervousness was showing, but it was more of a flustered nervous than an intimidated one. Like a fan meeting their favorite artist, or something. Cass was still obviously enthusiastic about all of this though, like a child high on sugar. She just hoped she didn't look like one.

But wow. She looked different up close, somehow. The confident aura probably helped, but still. Hey, she wasn't complaining, Cass appreciated good looking people. Luckily, the topic was diverted to the wine she possessed.

Cabernet Sauvignon, huh? Wasn't that your typical, every day bottle? Interesting, but definitely respectable. Ah who was she kidding, she knew almost nothing about alcoholic beverages, as confirmed by Andrea's comments. "Aww, that's alright ma'am! Totally fine with it, I'm content with my coffee and lemonades!" She let out a light-hearted laugh, completely oblivious to the undertones Andrea slid between her words.

...Although the sudden inclusion of "ma'am" struck her with embarrassment once again. Was that weird? It was a casual conversation, right? Was it appropriate? Was Andrea even considered a "higher-up"? Well yeah, she was older and all, most people here were anyways, but still... Couldn't turn back now, I guess, too late to worry about it at this point.

“You’re interesting”
“And talented to”

Wooooaahhh... Another one? "I-"

She honestly didn't know what to say to that, she was just smiling like an idiot. "T-thank you! Y'know, you're pretty talented and interesting yourself, I've heard about the contributions you've made in the lab. Man, I could never, props to you honestly!"

Andrea A Kaminsky’s POV

Cass definitely looked like a child on sugar high. Bouncing about her spot, wide-eyed and grinning, she reminded Andrea of a small child on way too much sugar that was just informed she was going to Disneyland. Interesting. A little nervous, perhaps, but there wasn’t the usual fear others had when talking to her. This was more like…should she say, a childlike mix of curiosity and awe? And with that thought, Andrea’s lips curved upwards in a small smirk- she had found her new target. “Well then, hello to you, Cass. I admire your guts to approach me, and judging from your work these past few months…I’d consider you less annoying.” She drawled out, swirling the wine in her glass before taking a sip.

It was quite true, Andrea had been observing the young girl for quite some time, amazed by her skill at the age where most other girls would still be schooling, chatting about girly things or boys or whatever. Cass seemed mature for her age. No matter, she was still a little innocent. A compliment here, a well placed praise there, and she would have Cassidy as a sort of…victim? No no, what was that word again? Ah yes, an apprentice.

“Ma’am? Well, that’s a first. I’ve only ever had…well, men scream that out as they begged me to- never mind that’s not very PG. A little too gruesome and violent. Point is, I’ve never been addressed as such unless it’s my new prey” Andrea mimed the slicing of a neck as well as several other gestures that looked suspiciously like organ harvesting. “But anyways, sweetheart, I must insist on letting your first sip of alcohol be a good one. If you ever wish to try alcohol, do come find me.”

Andrea’s smirk grew wider when Cass flushed under her gaze, probably realising what she had just addressed Andrea as. “Call me Andrea, darling. Or Alia, whichever you’re more comfortable with”

The compliments seem to be causing Cass to trip over her words with an adorable stutter. “I know I’m talented, cutie. Though I appreciate the compliment. You’re not too shabby yourself.” Three nicknames had slipped out already, Andrea’s words seemingly nonchalant. Silver-tongued and eloquent, her words rolled off her tongue with ease, bringing with it a waterfall of compliments for the young Cassidy.

Narcisse Michon

"Hey! Do you know where the cleaning supplies are?"

Narcisse was minding his own business, plotting the murder of one Detective Mawer when a janitor approached him. "No. Do I look like I'd know?"

He eyed her with growing irritation. "How old are you? Twelve? I didn't know they let children in the agency. Don't you have somewhere to be... like middle school?"

Andreja Buivis

"Oh, Head Detective Jemu!" Andreja beamed. "I wasn't aware that you were interested in the lower class. Was it getting boring up there at the top? I bet it was. Not very many people for you to yell at over there. I can't imagine how sad it must've been for you."

She sneered, looking away despite herself. She never knew how to interact with the older detectives of the agency. Sure they were authority figures, but they were also... authority figures. Ew.

"So what brings you over here? You want to toy with some baby interns? Hell, I won't stop you. Go right ahead."

"You're... a head detective?" Glasses whispered. She levelled him with a glare and he shrunk under her gaze. "It's nice to meet you... sir..."

Jace Mawer (Nora)

"No! Gasp! The horror! How could they?" Nora shook her head in disgust. "Pathetic. The gall it had to tell you how to live your rapidly-diminishing grease-fueled life."

It infuriated her. Imagine, a robot giving you health tips! Clearly it didn't understand that life sucked and that chicken made it better (and wonderfully shorter). She should give it a piece of her mind!

"Sounds like you rehearsed that more than a few times, Nora."

She perked up. "Macy!" She spun on her heel and clasped the girl's hands. "You bet I did! I had to practice my piss-off-Narcisse expressions right down to the crinkles in my face! It was a long and arduous journey, but it's all worth it to have you appreciating my efforts."

I don't think I've tortured her in a while. Maybe I should steal her glasses and superglue them to the office teddy bear?

After all, trolling her all-too-serious colleagues was one of her few pleasures in life. Macy seriously needed to be brought down a notch and this might be just the way to do it.

Nora snuck a hand out of Macy's and subtly tried to reach for the girl's face.
