When The World Needs You - RP
Forum-Index → Roleplay → When The World Needs You - RPA silence fell upon the two once again, which made Mei feel the need to say something. She began to open her mouth, but she was stopped by a haunting chill, a slight "breeze", and a dark and wispy voice.
"...Shadows. Hello?"
The darkness called out once again, perfectly mimicking Cath's voice. Well, except for the creepy echo that came with it, distorting the sound somewhat. Its tone seemed to be... distasteful, to say the least, when it first spoke, almost as if it resented referring to itself as "the shadows".
Mei said nothing.
She instead looked around cautiously, clearly on edge but she refrained from saying anything. She wasn't sure what to think anymore...
She hadn't realized just how much she had missed Neo and Cath until now, and now they could begin their adventures together without any further interruptions. Or so she hoped. Nodding at Nox, she said, "I'm good to go." Everything she would need was in the briefcase.
Let me tell you a secret,
The real monsters don't look like monsters~
"If you use my words, I may be able to converse with you. Are you the being that controls this realm? Yes, no? Are you the force that brought me here? Yes, no?"
This was science at its best. This was what everyone had dreamed of before the demons came; discovering the physics of magic. Discovering new magical forces and powerful beings...
Mei was silent. Cath couldn't tell if she was confused or annoyed.

She sat there for a moment or two, contemplating the interaction. This was a learning experience for her as well, even though she didn't care as much as the scientist. Mei never intended to learn more about this being, she never felt the need to. A mutual relationship where they did their own thing was good enough.
The silence lasted longer than Mei thought, meaning the questions Cath had asked were not going to be answered, at least not right now. Oh well, what a shame I guess. Mei wasn't stupid enough to push it any further, even if she wanted to know the answers as well. She had to be wary of the one actually asking the questions though, she could get herself in a dangerous situation...
Well, Mei pushed buttons before, wouldn't hurt to do it again, right?
"Hey, your new favorite asked you a question. Don't be shy!" Mei said firmly, but it almost sounded like she was teasing this all-powerful being. Sure, it was a bit stupid, a bit bold, and crazy as hell, but she'd deal with the consequences later.
"...Dumbass."
Mei's face suddenly changed quite drastically, her shocked expression holding for a moment or two after the insult. Surprisingly, she soon burst out into laughter. So apparently it had been listening the entire time, and only chose to "speak" now. It imitated her voice from earlier, when she yelled at Cath, which was certainly unexpected.
Mei's laughter continued on and on, until she was interrupted by more responses. This time, the voice seemed tired, annoyed almost, and it was certainly reluctant to speak.
"Being... yes."
"...Brought you here..."
"Yes."
It suddenly got chilly, and an ominous vibe fell upon the two. It was almost as if it was threatening them, or trying to make them, Cath specifically, scared. "Oooh, how spooky..." Mei commentated through her strained giggles. She had really laughed so much that she could do it no longer... What a joke.
A harsh wind began to blow all of a sudden, only affecting Mei, but she was tossed around pretty roughly. It even took her a bit to get herself oriented again. Her weakened laughs returned, obviously not caring about the "punishment" she had received. All she was learning was that this place apparently had a sense of humor, quite similar to hers. She just wondered why she never saw it until now... The being behind this definitely wasn't as childish or cliché as it was appearing to be, maybe it was putting on an act? Why would it even need to do that?
Mei would've shown her concern and unease if the resulting mood change wasn't so drastic. Besides, she didn't want to ruin Cath's parade. All she did was keep laughing, like she always did.
"...Brought you here..."
"Yes."
Cath was mildly concerned that Mei was being tossed around as if she was in the middle of a maelstrom. She was curious,
She went over what she already knew. The Shadow Realm was a being who had brought her here. It could only repeat words that had been said while in its space. It didn't like to be called Shadow. It seemed to have a hold on Mei; the two were interconnected. Their relationship seemed... complicated.
Mei continued to laugh, even though she had no reason to. That in itself concerned Cath. And what was the deal with being the "new favorite"?
"Where is here? An in-between, a beyond? Why did you bring me here? Was it a prank? A punishment? An opportunity? Something more?" She paused. "And is there anything you would prefer to be called? Realm? Being? Some other word I've said today?" It was more questions than she would usually ask, but she wanted to provide it with as much words as possible to respond with.

The voice it echoed back was far different this time, one only Mei recognized. She whipped around to face some random location in the void, her laughter immediately stopped. She was obviously shaken and understandably so, that voice was of those who had been long gone.
A million eyes seemed to be glaring at Mei in that moment, the tension was intense. It was as if the being who spoke said those words specifically to get a reaction out of Mei, not only to show its lack of interest in Cath's multitude of questions.
Mei stood there, unmoving and expressionless, all while the darkness around them continued.
"... Nothing." It was that same voice again, instead of using what Mei had said before. It was hard to believe this place was just nothing, devoid of any life or matter, but that's really all it was. It was just a hole in reality.
"Just a jest... That is all." There it was again, the same voice that was currently tormenting Mei.
"..."
The silence has begun once again. The final question wasn't answered. The tension was as high as ever.
"She knows."
The sudden firmness of the voice would've startled Mei if she wasn't frozen in place, staring at the nothingness in front of her. She... didn't even seem to be breathing. She just seemed lost in thought, but that obviously wasn't the case. She couldn't remember who that voice belonged to.
"Your friends are waiting, Cath."
Mei spoke softly, her voice quivering slightly but hardly enough to notice. What was noticeable, though, was how strongly she spoke those words, almost like it was an order.

oh hey what's this
Two simple words. Who is she? What did she know? Was the voice referring to her or Mei? The last response from the "nothingness" was perplexing. And it still hadn't given her a name to call it by...
Those words. They weren't hers or Mei's. But Mei recognized them. The first voice at least. She had been scared when she asked
"If my presence is... just a jest... then will I be able to come back here sometime? Will I... will I ever be able to talk to you again? Whoever you are?" Her words were halting. Whatever she said seemed to be stored inside the nothingness forever, to be used to communicate with each traveller.

Mei knew exactly who it was referring to, who knew the answer to Cath's question. It was her.
"You just couldn't resist, could you..." She muttered under her breath. She's getting too comfortable. Too attached. But all Mei could do, or rather felt like doing, was sit around and wait for a response. As hard as it was, she was finally able to stop thinking about the sudden new voice, but she felt so hollow, like the thoughts drained everything out of her. The human mind wasn't supposed to remember that long ago, but then again, they weren't supposed to be possessed like Neo or crawl their way out of Hell like Mei herself. Maybe... Just maybe... No, it wasn't worth it. Give it up.
Before she could start thinking about it again, the voice spoke, and this time it resembled Mei's.
"Perhaps..."
A force that felt like a soft wind blew around Cath, for some reason.
"Only... through her"
Cath's arm suddenly flew up, horizontal to her shoulders and pointed directly at Mei.
"Cath... What the hell..." Mei said, her tone somewhat angry, but mostly confused and bewildered. Did she know that it was right, that only she could bring her back here? No... That gesture was too unnatural, but then...
Oh. What a fun discovery.
She nodded slowly and deliberately, shaking the thoughts from her head, and turned back to the other woman. "You're going to have to show me how to get out of here... I don't know how to leave yet." As soon as her feet were back on her normal plane of existence, she was grilling Mei on everything she knew.
And then all of the sudden it hit her: Mei's mannerisms were that of someone from ancient times. And the name Mei Akamatsu... an old myth. A trickster who had angered the demons and had been sent to Hell. The myth had been changed a thousand times, but in many retellings, she had been able to commune with chaos itself.
