When the Stars Fell
Forum-Index → Roleplay → When the Stars FellStanding up straight again, she twisted on the ball of her foot to spin around and fall onto the couch, feeling a satisfying squish as she sunk into it. This thing really was high quality...she would definitely miss it when she graduated. After a while of sitting, staring into space, lost in thought, something poked her in the leg. It felt kind of...hairy, in the not-so-soft way?
Okay...what the hell was that?
She looked down to see what it was, a shiver running down her spine. A moment later, she screamed at the top of her lungs.
"WHO THE EF LET A TARANTULA IN HERE?" She cried like a friggin banshee.
The smile was a little sad, the reminder that this was their final year. Glancing over his shoulder as he popped the shortbread dough into the oven, he was struck speechless at the photos. Was that really what he looked like? One flour covered hand came up to gently pat his own cheek as if making sure that yes, the warm aura surrounding the baker captured on the screen was indeed him. "Oh." He simply breathed, eyes flickering between the phone and Meka. "Is that h-" Whatever he was going to say was cut off by the sound of a shutter going off and Alaparos instinctively flinched, drawing himself up to sit up straighter and hurriedly wiping off any flour on his person. His head snapped towards the entrance to the kitchen to see three people crowded around the entryway. They weren't anyone that he could recognize so he assumed that they were either from a different dorm or in their first year. There was a weird kind of staring contest between the two groups before a loud scream distracted them all. At the same moment, the timer that he had set for the cookies went off and Alaparos threw in the proverbial towel. Yeah, he really wasn't going to deal with all of this at once.
Opening the oven, Alaparos gingerly took out a batch of spiced caramel shortbread and set the tray on the counter to cool. Seeing that the chocolate chips were all rolled out into the proper shapes, he put those into the oven and restarted the counter. "Well, either you can come in and be my taste tester or you can go and check out what that scream was all about." He offered lightly, speaking to everyone present.
The birdsong of shock tittered through the hallways, following Song BingLiu as he was carried down towards the kitchens. Any attempted signing was thwarted as he was pulled along. It wasn't anything awful, though his feet did trip over themselves in his haste to follow. He hoped dearly to the stars and back that the trio wasn't going to interrupt anything but luck wasn't exactly Song BingLiu's friend. Of course it wasn't just one person who they had barged in on but two. Even worse was the fact that Soliel's camera shutter alerted them to their presence and Song BingLiu shrunk away from the blond haired student's inquisitive gaze.
The shriek though. That sounded like something straight out of a horror movie and may whoever made that sound pray that they never get found because Song BingLiu was going to have some very choice words about swearing, especially at a decibel loud enough to make his ears ring. Wincing, he shot a dirty look at the direction of the dorms, lip curled in disdain.

“Seek what sets your heart on fire”
”What in the,” Soleil muttered. The scream was loud enough to hear clearly from the kitchen.
While she didn’t focus on the full sentence, one thing caught her attention. A tarantula?
A TARANTULA?!
No, Soleil was not extremely scared of tarantulas. Frankly, one of her friends in the past was the reason she got past that fear, even if they still gave her the creeps, but the horrified scream was enough to send Soleil dash for the living room, leaving behind Song and Lyra, her holy love and dying curiosity to try the cookies.
And her precious camera, that she had taken off her neck when she was capturing the picture, lying beside them.
She appeared in the living room, panting. She looked at the person, who she assumed did the screaming.
She walked over, still tired from running and plucked the hairy beast off.
“Geez, you scared us,” she sighed as she opened the window and set the little guy free. She caught her breath and finally observed the person.
Soleil didn’t see her anywhere in the courtyard, and she couldn’t make out if they were a first or second year. However, Soleil’s mind was only focusing on befriending this person for now
“I didn’t get to introduce myself. I’m Soleil,” she said friendly, just as how she had introduced herself to the other people. She unconsciously touched her neck.
Only to find her camera missing.
She was suddenly frantic, looking around in panic for the device she would, quite literally, call her life.
'Hey, even I asked for permission before taking a pictu-'
A shiver ran up his spine as he heard a blood curdling scream resonating in the hallway. Leaving his phone on the counter, he quickly ran back to the house - immediately getting into action on reflex. He looked at the two girls in front of him, sighing in relief as he watched the other junior pick the tarantula. Walking over to the couch, he looked at the one who was screaming and tried to comfort her.
'Are you alright? See, the thing is gone now. How's your throat?'
They shook their head. Fear would only make them think irrationally. It could very well have been a false alarm. Sighing, they righted something they had knocked off of their desk in their haste, and decided to head towards wherever the scream had happened to check for themself.
Making their way downstairs, they followed the echoing silence that now felt too large after such a loud sound. Clutching their hat and putting it back on while they walked, as they had taken it off in their room, they found where they assumed the sound had come from and entered quietly, hoping not to disturb anyone.
Then, as they opened the door, they saw three students, and one of them was just finishing releasing a spider back outside. Venture’s breathing began to quicken, but they tried to calm themself down, telling themself that the spider had now gone and there was no more need for fear. But the thought that a spider had made its way into the dorms and could get back in so easily was enough for panic to start setting into Venture’s mind.
“Could you close the window…? Please?” They murmured, trying hard to keep their voice from shaking as they thought about the spider crawling back in.
"Er, my throats fine, thanks." That didn't come out as kind as she had hoped, but she hoped it didn't come off as rude. She glanced back at Soliel as she returned. "Thanks for getting rid of it. I guess none of you own the thing?" She guessed the answer was yes, as it didn't seem like anyone here was particularly fond of spiders. Heck, the poor girl that had just arrived seemed to be just as frightened as she had been. Just in case, she glanced around for the nearest window. These weirdos hadn't opened them up over the summer, had they?
Meka smiled softly, relieved as he got up slowly from the squat he was in. He walked over to the window and closed it shut to make sure no more tarantulas spawned to terrorize the lives of his juniors. What if it was someone's pet? Though that was unlikely since who would be that careless to let it go from sight? He turned back towards his juniors, talking in an apologetic manner.
'I'm sorry your first day started with this chaos. Even I don't know where that came from, and I've been here for a while.'
Clearing his throat, he tried to muster up the courage to be a generous senior. If Alaparos was an excellent homemaker, then he'd be the brilliant host!
'Since that whole debacles over..how about we go have something to eat in the kitchen? I'm sure you'll each find something you'll like.'
"Hey, um... I think I recognize you," they said, forcing down the feeling of hot awkwardness that always followed them around like a lost puppy whenever they attempted at a conversation, though it was far less innocent. They cleared their throat. "Meka, was it? I'm Venture," they nodded towards the other second-year, trying hard to hide the anxiety rising in their throat as they feared how much they would actually be recognized. Not just because of how little they had interacted with others last year, but with how much they'd changed their appearance over the break. Trying to ignore the thoughts continuously grappling for attention inside their mind, they kept up their smile, hoping that their warm expression wouldn't induce any unnecessary fear, which often happens when they get too excited.
"Also, that would be nice," they glanced away for a moment, hoping that nobody noticed the flicker of uncertainty wavering in their eyes. They had difficulty accepting offers of kindness nowadays, but at least this year they were more familiar with their surroundings, making it easier to focus more on meeting people rather than trying not to get lost.

“Seek what sets your heart on fire”
Hearing Meka speak broke Soleil from her worries for a minute. Right, she reminded, it was in the kitchen, with Song and Lyra. Thank goodness.
She also had a little feeling of guilt tugging at her. She already had so many apologies to give in her to-do list. She might as well get it over and done with.
"Well, I still have to apologize for snapping that picture earlier on," she started. "It was just that I didn't want to disturb you guys since you looked so busy and I figured you wouldn't mind me just taking a shot of the kitchen floor," she explained. She knew it sounded weird. Who in the world fawns over a floor covered in flour? She would have to give the same speech to the other person, who looked pretty tense when she took the picture.
She was suddenly hoping he wouldn't punish her by not giving her some cookies, Soleil was dying to taste it.
"Is everyone alright?" Came the motherly concern that coloured Alaparos' voice as he rolled into the common rooms, eyebrows knitted together in worry. Golden eyes swept across the room taking in both the new and familiar faces. It didn't look like anyone was dying so he was going to just assume that no one was dying or anything like that. Hopefully. And if anyone was... well it was a good thing that he was certified to administer first aid he supposed? When everyone had rushed to check out the noise, Alaparos had simply sighed and offered the nervous looking first year who had stayed behind a plate of shortbread cookies and wheeled himself towards the dorms after turning off the stoves and making sure that the kitchen wouldn't catch on fire the moment he rolled out into the hallway. Oh his way, he had picked up Meka's phone and Soliel's camera, both pieces of technology seated innocuously on his floured blanket lap.
Song BingLiu was having a day. Suffice to say, he was left standing alone in a kitchen with a plate of cookies in his hands. Two actually, one plate of shortbread and another of chocolate chip. Taking one shortbread cookie, he nibbled on it while trailing after the wheelchair bound senior that had previously been baking said cookies. The moment he arrived at the dorms again, he wordlessly passed the plate of cookies to his friends before scurrying to hide behind the closet wall. There was simply way too many people around and while he wasn't opposed to large crowds it was a bit overwhelming.
'Ah yeah Venture, I remember you too. It's been a while.'
His year mate looked a bit different from what he remembered, but he couldn't place the difference much with his hazy memory of the past year. He nods as he tries to take note of his belongings which he'd earlier scattered in a rush. Coat was still up, luggage by the door, nothing moved. A sigh of relief escaped from his lungs, happy that no other incidents would stir up the already chaotic atmosphere. His thoughts escaped his mind when he heard one of the girls speak, it was the junior who had saved the day from the tyranny of the tarantula.
'Well while I do get wanting to take the picture, you could have announced you were there you know? You gave us a fright! But what's done is done, let's go have some treats.'
Meka chuckled softly, amused at how his junior thought of such an adorable idea. He wanted to pat her on the head but held back, cringing at the thought inside. On hearing the door creak open, he looked up to see Alaparos come in. He nodded and signalled the other with an "OK" sign as a reply to his question, reassuring the other that everything had been settled. He walked over to the other, noticing his phone on his lap.
'Oh thanks! Sorry I left you there. We were just thinking of going to the kitchen.'

“Seek what sets your heart on fire”
Soleil smiled at Meka, the gloominess shadowing her previously now slightly disappearing, like storm clouds slowly drifting away from the sun, her golden eyes shined.
She had approached Alaparos later to apologize to him too before grabbing some of the cookies, gratefully, before she joined where Song was, in the corner and isolated from the rest. She sat down beside him. She felt bad again, he looked so overwhelmed.
“Sorry, for dragging you into all of this,” she whispered to him. Even when she was caught up in the rush of things, she managed to catch certain expressions on Song’s face. Expressions that she didn’t like. She had remembered a memory, so distant and faint. Thanks to her forgetfulness, she forgot most of it.
Soleil gave Song a brief look. She smiled before leaving him and joining the crowd, with the only rare hint of fleeting sadness slightly dimming her bright eyes.
‘Don’t give up on me yet’
“Well, since we’re all mostly here, why don’t we all get to know each other?” she beamed, switching to normal Soleil almost instantly. She might as well take this moment to get to know her dormmates well. She only hoped they were even interested in her idea.
"you were too correct"
They turned towards Soleil at the words. "That sounds like a good idea," they said, their voice seeming as though it were trying to disappear into nothingness. They glanced around the room. Things seemed to have settled down by now, and with barely a passing glance to recognize anyone else who may have joined the room, they wandered over to the window out of which the spider had been released. They looked outside and fiddled mindlessly with the latch, locking and unlocking the window, pondering their thoughts, drowning out the noise of chatter that came from all sides as people began to talk with one another.
They weren't really one for socializing. In the past year, it had almost become their personal goal to talk to as few people as they possibly could. This year, they knew that it would be different. Something told them that this year, they could make friends. Maybe this year, everything would finally work out exactly as it was supposed to...
"Its no problem at all. Do remember your phone though, it wouldn't do to live it around unattended." He teased lightly, handing Meka his phone with both hands. "And you as well, young madam. Remember to keep a close eye on your belongings. Though you needn't feel bad about taking the food, it was made for that very reason. Everyone is welcome to it." There were a few familiar faces and he waved to who he thought was Venture though he couldn't be quite sure, a welcoming smile on his face. He encouraged the baked goods to be passed around, the still warm and delicious treats making their way around the room. It was no where near the scale that Alaparos would have liked to bake but these were unexpected circumstances and he was glad that he could share something with everyone else. Besides, the delight that burst over people's faces when they tasted the product of his and Meka's work was more than enough to brighten his day.
When it was suggested that they all try and get to know each other a bit more, he honed in on whoever spoke. It was the girl who he had handed the camera back to, her sunny disposition matching the blinding flash of the camera. She seemed like an intriguing character, someone who could be at the center of the room and blossom under the attention. A natural leader.
"I'm fine. I think?" He signed hesitantly, smile wobbly yet present. "It's okay. I really don't mind this. Thank you for the concern." A slender finger flicked and toyed with the dangling chains that swung from his pierced ear, callused pads running over the textured metal. He was slightly worried about the whole getting to know each other thing, unsure if others would understand him. It was already a dream that his two new friends understood sign but the rest... he didn't want to impose. But speaking was another hurdle all together, especially in a room full of people. He still didn't understand what was going on with his voice and how it made others trip over themselves in an attempt to please him, but if that took effect over a large group of people, he loathed to think what would happen then. Chaos, certainly, but Song BingLiu didn't want to try it out any time soon. "Can one of you interpret for me when it's my turn?" He asked hesitantly, feeling like he was imposing slightly. But all things considered, it was the best option.

“Seek what sets your heart on fire”
“Oh yeah, right,” she said as she took her camera from Alaparos and slinged it around her neck. Finally, it's little weight on her neck had fully brought back her sunny demeanor.
“Why don’t I start first,” she voiced out once she scanned and planned how she would get them to introduce each other. “Then we’ll go around in a circle from my left?” Soleil suggested. Since she knew Song and Lyra, she wanted to know the second years, whom she just met 2 minutes ago, first. Additionally, she thought it would give Song just enough time to cool down before he had his turn, which Soleil or Lyra would help with.
“Anyway, I’m Soleil Eneida and I go by the nickname ‘Sol’. I admit that I can be a little crazy person sometimes
'If you need anything else, don't be afraid to ask.'
After having done his deed, he went back to Alaparos' side - anywhere else would feel like he was intruding. Was it this hard to meet new people? He stood up straight, adjusted his hair a bit and pulled his sleeves back down.
So the girl with the camera was Soleil. 'How bright', he thought. He nodded in agreement at her ending sentence, turning towards the next person in the circle.
