Kingdom of Aeraya
Forum-Index → Roleplay → Kingdom of AerayaWincing, Elliot gnawed on his lip and nodded sullenly. "I understand, Captain. I'm... sorry." The apology was gritted out, the ugly feeling of regret and guilt weighing heavily on him. He sighed and gripped his sword tightly, letting the familiar groves imprinted into the handle calm his raging emotions. Ugly and unsightly, those abhorrent emotions.
Wincing at Regina's offhand comment on his work, Elliot wondered if those who weren't his immediate family knew how he was covering Noah's work as well as taking on some of his father's work in secret. More important things? Everything he did was important, he worked himself to the bone, past the marrow and out the other side with work relating to the kingdom, running it and lifting some of the burdens off his parents' shoulders. All he ever did was important things, was he not allowed to rest for a moment and do his own things? His rage simmered for a second before Elliot firmly placed a lid on it and shoved it away into a dark corner never to be revisited again. It wasn't right of him to get mad at Regina since she was busy enough with her own work. He couldn't expect everyone to know everything. Getting angry over such an offhand remark would do no one any good. "In my defence, that was my original intent. I spotted an unfavourable contract between us and a neighbouring kingdom and wished to bring it up with father." He finally settled on saying, waving the stack of creased papers in his hand
"A simple loophole within clauses, that's all." Elliot shrugged, face flushing slightly under the fact that Regina believed that he could be an amazing king. He didn't really get compliments like that very often, mostly because of his own isolationist tendencies. "In this agreement, the neighbouring kingdom is obliged to provide a cut of its harvest, profit from its exports, and loyalty in return for access to a major water source on our territory which also includes quite a few natural resources nearby. This contract will maintain its power for five years before it can be reassessed by both parties and renewed. That in itself isn't odd, but the real loophole comes within our neighbouring kingdom's laws."
Shuffling the papers around, Elliot pulled out a second piece of paper on which the neighbouring kingdom's laws were transcribed with Elliot's careful legible handwriting. "See, in this clause, it states that any resources gained from a treaty belong to the royal family and the royal family only. Therefore, any profit made from the resources farmed around the area won't be included within the percentage of which is owed to us. A large cut of the neighbouring Kingdom's economy comes from the land given to them by us and through this clause, they're able to escape heavier reparations than what should be owed." Flipping over the transcribed clause, Elliot also showed Regina rough calculations that he had mapped out, of gains losses and estimates. It was clear that what the neighbouring kingdom was sending over was well under what would be expected.
"I'm not surprised that Father hasn't caught this though." He finally finished, organizing his documents into a tidy pile organized by importance. "The clause was created recently, around two years ago. Right when the contract was re-newed last."
"That was where I was unfortunately stuck on. Usually, I bring these issues to Father and we sort them out together and sometimes if they're available, we enlist the aid of Mother and the rest of the advisors." He sighed, rubbing his eyes. Ah, the wonderful side effects of staying up late and learning about foreign politics while squinting under the low light of slow-burning candles. He did stiffen when he heard Reigna address his father, his hand immediately falling down by his side as he stood up straight all signs of wry exhaustion melting away.
He was about to greet his father when he heard what Reigna had said. Threat upon his father's life? Was that the reason for the grim atmosphere which permeated the halls of the castle? He supposed the royal spies found evidence of such a scheme hatching within the shadows, he also couldn't rule out the possibility that a threatening letter was sent. While he appreciated the warning so that they could at least prevent it, why would anyone choose to announce that they were going to kill the king? Oh, you know. The most important man in the entire kingdom? Either these people were extremely confident in their abilities or they were plain stupid.
They lightly knocked on his door, not waiting for a reply and instead opening it a little and peeking the puppet's head in
"Of course of course" he slightly rolled his eyes as his brother exclaimed his genius. He's gonna have to knock down that ego one day. He looks at the map intently, or well, it at least seems like he's paying attention. "Roger that, I'm in"
"All I ask is that whoever is unlucky enough to be assigned to me doesn't mind sitting in the library for hours on end, watching me work. I understand that simply sitting there with unchanging scenery can get quite old quite fast." Elliot agreed easily shuddering at the memory of the last time he had been assigned a guard. The foolish knight didn't even last half a day before Elliot was pestered to do something other than work, study, or read. Granted, he was naught but a child back then and probably should have spent more time outside with his brother and sisters, but Elliot was nothing if not stubborn. Besides, he went out plenty enough, what with chasing down his brother and occasionally training with his sword even if his pale parlour suggested otherwise.
Personally, Elliot preferred if his guard was male so he could attempt to fluster whoever was assigned to him through mild flirtations but he didn't dare voice that out loud. His father had enough headaches to deal with in addition to yet another assassination attempt, but let it be known that the trickster nature runs within the Sapphirus bloodline and even the uptight second son wasn't immune to occasional bouts of tomfoolery.
Lovino gapes his mouth at Feliciano, offended. "Don't roll your eyes at me, you absolute clown!" He karate-chops him on the head properly and snatches a book from his hands, opening and examining it. He begins walking briskly, not caring to check if his brother follows along or not. When he reaches the point of the map he spotted, he takes a few steps back.
"Ew, there's guards all over the place. Pretentious fools. They probably don't even know what weapon they're holding."
He turns his head slightly backwards, still not sparing his brother any looks. "You ready or not, sheep? We're starting with the song on page 41."
Noah sat on his bed. His clothes were still damp from the water punishment, and he stared at the ground. He didn't know what to do. His usual smile was replaced with a thin line. Maybe it isn't good for me to exhibit this behaviour. My younger brother acts more mature than I do. What if father dies, and I have to take over? He forced the last thought out of his head. Nothing bad will happen to the King. He has armies for a reason. He reassured himself. But the thought kept coming to him.
"Noah?" Ava was now fully in the prince's room "Well, the lack of attention is a little discouraging here!" They laughed, a laugh that didn't last that long and came to a sudden stop as they seem to have realized the seriousness of the situation right now. They usually are too oblivious for this but Noah is their friend, they know him. They went and sat next to him. "You know, if something's reaally troubling you, you can tell me." they brought up the ambiguous animal sock puppet and made it speak, too "Yeah! That's what they're here for!" Even then Ava couldn't help but try to lessen the suffocating tension "Thanks for the support, Tabby." They looked to Noah with a small smile.
"Ow!" Feliciano sadly couldn't do anything about this physical abuse. "Sure, I'm ready, goat... how did that song go again?"
