The real monsters don't look like monsters~
...What? Shouldn't she at least not try and ruin their parade? They were
Mei made the decision to not ruin their day any longer and left quietly, just as Nox did moments before. She sunk deep into the shadows and dashed away, making sure her departure wasn't all that noticeable. Of course, Cerberus being a young and paranoid canine, he noticed. He looked over in her general direction and tilted his head in curiosity, slightly whimpering whenever she left the room. He didn't follow, of course, he liked the non-demon/witch people better, but he didn't seem happy about Mei leaving either.
Cerberus whimpered, and Cath turned just in time to see "Lilac" walk through a wall. She lunged after her, stumbling when she hit air and shadow instead of wood. Shades of grey and purple swirled around her. Cerberus whined again, but he sounded far away. He was there, but he... wasn't?
"Lilac?" She called. The girl appeared almost to be swimming, flying through the viscous material. "What the- Where am I?"
She raised her hand to her face. It looked pale and strange. She was floating even though there was no floor for her feet to stand on. Neo and Athena were still embracing in the adjacent room. Reaching for them was futile. She carefully started to experiment, trying to figure out how to move.
"Lilac!?" She called again, hoping she could hear her.

Mei was almost out of the host by the time the darkness around her shifted, almost as if it was making room for two. Sure, the shadows were as endless as her exhaustion, but it was just so... odd. Mei froze in place, staring at the blurry and tinted landscape in front of her. She was inside the outer wall of the house, but the strange feeling seemed to be echoing from the room she was just in.
"Lilac?"
The noise almost made her jump, her blood began to rush and fill the empty noise in her ears. Normally, sounds heard from outside the shadows would echo and be muffled, just like how she sounded. But this time...
The voice was loud and clear.
Mei didn't turn around, or even move an inch. Her wide eyes stayed focused on the greenery beyond, but her mind wandered.
What the hell was going on... How was this even possible? Someone had definitely followed her in, but how?
"What the hell is going on here? What did you do?!"
Mei spoke to the being who ruled the realm she resided in, Cath couldn't hear of course, but Mei's confusion and anger seemed to almost radiate from her. She finally turned around to meet Cath's bewildered gaze.
The only response she got was silence, but it felt as though the shadows simply shrugged at her, like even it didn't know what was going on. How could you be an entire realm personified but not even know how it worked? Mei would've sighed angrily if her body wasn't frozen in shock.
"What the- Where am I? Lilac!?"
Cath's voice resonated once again. The noise made Mei snap out of it, which let her move over to where Cath was floating helplessly. Ah great... Cath didn't even know how this worked, it was incredibly dangerous for her to be here... Mei approached carefully, her face clearly expressing her confusion and shock. "How the... What...?" Was all she could say, stopping before her and watching as Cath experimented. Shouldn't her body be crumbling under the elements? It was supposed to be freezing cold temperatures, and her eyes shouldn't even be working!
Oh. I see. This was all intentional, a little trick played by the shadows. It shrugged like it knew nothing, but in reality, it was just being lenient. Normally it hated even Mei from being here, always being so picky about how the realm operated, but this time...
What had changed?
Magic. Strange magic.
She could feel a strange whisper like a cool breeze wrapping itself around her. She shivered involuntarily, and the motion propelled her upward. She was so startled that she couldn't even scream. She tried to keep calm, and increase the surface area of her body to slow her motion with some success.
"LILAC!" she yelled again. This girl was so frustrating... she had stopped so Cath knew she had heard her. "Do you maybe mind?"

Mei moved closer, just in time for Cath's yell to blare in her ears. She recoiled and held her hands over her sensitive ears, which haven't even recovered from the previous incident. "I'm right here, dumbass!" Mei yelled back, almost ready to slap Cath. That wouldn't make any sense for her to do, but it would've been funny. That is, if she shadows agreed. Clearly it didn't, since the air around her shifted and a chill ran down her spine. This realm was so used to only having to bear Mei's voice, and not much of it really, so it absolutely hated the commotion that was taking place right now.
"Yes, I do mind, thank you very much!" She threw her arms up in response, exaggerating her anger and bewilderment. She then threw her arms on Cath's shoulders to stop her from flailing around, hopefully anchoring the scientist in place. "Jeez, can you take it down a notch?! You gotta tone it down in here!" She groaned, looking her dead in the eyes. Mei wasn't playing around this time, her tone and expression were serious. No games, no tricks, no nothing.
Mei sighed, taking one hand off Cath and pinching the bridge of her nose. "Look, I'll tell you what you want to know about this place, but first you need to tell me how you got here..."
She rolled her eyes. She didn't hate Lilac. Not... quite. But the girl had absolutely no appreciation for the subtlety of facts and figures and LOGIC.
"Where even is here?"

She let out a slight groan, her eyes closed and facing the ground. She was shaking her head slowly in annoyance, all while muttering something barely loud enough for the one across from her to hear. "Why can't I just be left alone for once..."
The irony and hypocrisy in that statement was immaculate, but she continued on. Mei looked up at Cath and tilted her head, her face held no discernable expression. She took her hands off of her and raised her right one to the back of her own head. "You just went through the wall, huh..." Mei muttered quietly, again, barely audible for Cath to hear. Well, that confirmed her suspicions, at least she hoped she was correct. The realm had accepted another visitor, and this time, no one was dying here. She could tell the shadows had no hatred for the woman, and didn't mind that she was still here. She couldn't believe it, but the darkness had allowed Cath to join Mei, exclusively when the latter wasn't even in the mood. Had she really rubbed off on her "partner" that much? Had it adopted her personality somewhat? Ah, nevermind that, Mei had a question to answer.
A sigh escaped from Mei's mouth as she started to answer. "This place? It's total zero, absolutely nothing. It's just an endless void, a realm that just so happens to connect and somewhat conform to yours. It's what lies behind the shadows, which is how able to enter and exit this realm..." She paused, something strange coming to mind. "Hmm... I'm surprised Abyss seemed to know nothing of this, I figured the guy literally named Abyss would be the ruler of this 'place', but I guess not..." She continued on, her voice getting lower and lower as she spoke. "Ah whatever, anything else you wanna know?"
She looked around, half expecting an answer. Too many questions.
"And ummm... Lilac... what's your real name?"

What really hit her the hardest was the last question. So she was still on that, huh... Mei's eyes widened slightly as the questions poured in, and she hesitated a bit before speaking. "...Wow, bit blunt, don't you think?"
"Alright, first off, I already explained it to you. I was born different or whatever and I started practicing dark magic." She paused, almost letting out yet another groan. She really didn't want to explain it again, not only because it sounded like some dumb edgy stuff a child would write, but also because of the memories it resurfaced. Gah, even that sounds dumb!
"...Yeah, I guess you could say it 'chose' me from the very beginning, but it's a lot more complicated than that." Mei turned her gaze to her left, almost as if she expected something to protest before she continued. "To put it simply, this entire realm is an actual entity, but not in the way you think. Not even I completely understand it, if I'm being honest..." Was she getting off track? "Anyways... I didn't exactly choose this fate, and it didn't choose me either..." She sighed once again, the thought of those memories weren't exactly pleasant. "I made the most of it and we came to a mutual agreement, and yes, you can talk to it. Don't expect to get an answer you understand though." Mei's expression changed slightly, and she gave a small chuckle. "I'm kinda jealous, honestly, it's not trying to kill you every time you take a breath." The air shifted in warning, which reset Mei's mood. Now for the hard question, the one she was hoping she didn't have to answer. Well, she didn't have to answer it now, but she felt obligated to.
"My name? ...Why the hell do you still care?" Mei replied, a small grin tugging a her cheek. She had to be careful with how she said it, Cath's opinion about her could change in an instant. Mei knew she read a lot, had a lot of knowledge, so there was no doubt her name showed up somewhere at least once.
"I'm Mei, Mei Akamatsu. Pleasure to meet you." Mei said hesitantly, almost as if she was scared instead of cautious. She held her hand out for Cath to shake, unsure if she would actually return it.
It was funny, really. Who knew if she stopped acting like a psychotic child, she could actually be more human.
Her name. Mei. Mei Akamatsu. It was... familiar. Cath felt that she should know it, but wasn't sure where it was from. She was preoccupied with the "shadow" realm.
"I... I may not have been fair to you when we first met, and I'm sorry for that. I-I- Sometimes I just want answers, ya'know? I know what it's like to not feel in control. What do you mean, trying to kill you every time you take a breath?"

Mei was taken aback by her apology, which made her rethink this entire thing. "...What? You were the one not being fair? Listen, I take full responsibility for it, that's what I wanted." Mei laughed awkwardly before continuing, not really sure where this was going. "Don't get all sappy on me now, I'd still watch your back if I were you~" She winked upon finishing her sentence, indicating the return of the Mei that Cath knew and loved.
Mei proceeded on with her answers, completely skipping over the "control" part. Mei clearly didn't want to dwell on that subject any longer, it just annoyed her.
Speaking of annoying... She looked around once again, making sure it was safe to continue, before giving her response. "What I meeeaaan is, we weren't always so friendly with each other. The shadows hated me and I hated it, and we constantly tried to separate ourselves. Y'see, it sorta lives in my mind and I live in this empty space, so that alone made dealing with each other impossible..." She leaned back as she was talking, crossing her arms and legs as if she was leaning against a wall. "Of course I was on the losing side of the whole thing, I was fighting against a supernatural, all-powerful being as a lowly human who only knew simple spells..." There she was again, babbling on and on about things she always told herself not to share. Oh well, she couldn't stop now. "It drove me crazy, took over my mind, yadayadayada, all that fun stuff."
"Guess you can figure things out from there," Mei ended with a dismissive smile before looking back over at Cath.
"So, what about you?"
