"Honestly, I don't know. Water has no rival now and my element
might be the strongest. If I lose control of my power, there'll be
nothing to hold me back." Saying it out loud made Luna feel better.
I have no friends due to the massive hole in my heart. Would you
consider being the one to plug up the hole of feeling?
Therese sighed before writing a sentence at the very top, suddenly
in a very royal-like handwriting. Even her grip on the pencil
loosened, as she finished writing. The sentence was written twice,
once in Therese's native language and the other translated
literally.
Denken in Schubladen bringt dich nicht aus dem Schrank.
Thinking in cupboards won't get you out of the closet.
Beneath, Therese wrote in her own crude writing again.
"So they really are going to force the circle thing huh?" Kynik
tapped at his plate with his fork, failing to stab a particularly
round vegetable that kept getting away. He managed to spear it,
triumphantly chomping down. "The students haven't exactly gotten to
know each other that well yet. I hope they choose correctly the
first time."
The young man glanced towards Sparmi at the head table but
continued the thoughtful observation. "It'll suck when the circles
reorganize themselves later due to wrong choices." Another
vegetable was plopped in his mouth. He wasn't talking to anyone in
particular, he had just voiced his thoughts so those sitting nearby
could comment if they wanted.
"Still, everyone seems promising, I'm just not sure who it would be
appropriate for me to join up with." He had some ideas based on his
view of the last couple days, but he wanted to hear opinions from
his peers firsthand.
Luna thought about that for a moment. "Hmmm, not really. Say, do
you think a circle could be a circle with two people." The words
slipped out without Luna thinking about it.
I have no friends due to the massive hole in my heart. Would you
consider being the one to plug up the hole of feeling?
Thalia was sitting quietly at a table of her own, her knife and
fork gently cutting up the food into bite sized pieces. This was on
of the rarer moments where her elegance and nobility really showed,
her etiquette perfect, her posture upright. Thalia never really
liked fancy or solemn dinners, but she felt obliged to behave as if
she was at one. As she considered Principal Sparmi’s words, she
thought about the earth element. Granted, it didn’t affect her, but
what about Mira? Surely it would have a huge impact on her….friend?
acquaintance? Thalia wasn’t quite sure what to think of Mira,
having been out of contact with many people for so long. And what
about Kynik? And Tien, Samton, Therese, Luna? It suddenly dawned of
Thalia how many people she seemed to have talked to. Thalia sighed.
This was getting very complicated. She continued eating in silence,
letting the voices of her other classmates drift over.
"Well, yes... trial and error will be necessary." Tien spoke in
reply to Kynik. He was having salad, and continued eating after
saying what he wished to.
Samton, who sat closely by Tien, was eating his dinner without many
words. How many, he wondered, would he have to decline? Most
invitations he received were so obvious in their intention to use
"the prince", it was almost funny the first few dozen times. As the
solicitations, including from seniors, reached nearly three scores,
he decided that would be sufficient, and had, from then onwards,
stopped sticking by to socialize. Luckily, nobody would disturb him
during dinner. They would not wish to annoy him, after all. Rather,
he ought to be much more careful after dinner. How wonderful it
would be if he could just, look at someone and discern their
intentions immediately! Oh well, couldn't be helped. As he kept
thinking he continued eating as well.
You'll notice soon enough. Though a circle out of two people
won't work, we need to assimilate.
Therese sighed, blushing again and writing down the name of every
person she could think of this far. Tien, Kynik, Samton, Thalia,
Mira and some others before sliding it to Luna and handing her the
pen.
You pick. You've got a better eye for friendships than me.
Luna looked at the list. "That's pretty good, I would say Cherali
as well. She was probably the first one I really connected with."
She was staring at the list again when she thought of something.
"What about names? Do you think circles need names?"
I have no friends due to the massive hole in my heart. Would you
consider being the one to plug up the hole of feeling?
Kynik poked his fork in Tien's direction. "You're not wrong in the
slightest. It may be noted though when the groups start rotating it
will cause a temporary imbalance. Efficiency gets lowered while the
group resettles."
He thought to himself for a moment before speaking again. "It's
works best if there aren't clashing personalities. A group could
have amazing potential but if they find they can't work well
together then it isn't really a team." He plucked at a bright red
tomato, letting it burst behind closed lips.
"I am just worried the circles will run into more of those kinds of
problems than normal because of the lack of preparation. Some might
forget we're not just choosing groups, we're forming teams." He
paused again and shook his head. "Or maybe I'm just being
overcritical and overthinking it. I would prefer to get it right
the first time though."
Thalia couldn’t help but chuckle at the words she heard from both
Kynik and Tien. From what she gathered from Luna and Therese, they
seemed to be discussing who should be in the circle group. That was
alright. Whereas Kynik, Tien and Samton? Well, Kynik and Tien.
Samton looked more deep in thought. She looked up at Kynik, and
frowned at the very inelegant table manners he was showing, but
otherwise said nothing. She gazed at Samton, her gaze plain and
obvious, her face blank, as she thoughtfully chewed on a bit of
edamame.
Mira cut up her food and ate slowly, the thought of circles
themselves didn’t sit well with her. Making friends wasn’t her
thing, she had never had a friend before. Especially now she was
nervous, although looking over to Thalia calmed her down a bit.
‘She’d want me in her group right? Maybe it won’t be so bad’
she thought to herself while she ate. She ate quite elegantly,
using each utensil as it should be used and having good
manners.
Klause had eaten his food fairly quickly, wasting no time to find
his potential comrades. This part of him wasn’t the best, and
didn’t show good manners. Laying an eye on Samton he stalked over
to their side of the table and pointed at him “You, let me join
your circle. You’ll need me. I’m a doctor, and a good one at that”
he said bluntly while disregarding all manners. The fact that
Samton was royalty wasn’t the reason he wanted to be in a circle
with him, it was that Samton’s circle would most likely be
powerful, and he wanted to learn all he could about magic types and
new spells. Especially from talented mages. Klause ignored the
stares and shocks of a few of the other students around them, not
realizing what he did.
Kynik perked up, his attention quickly drawn to the tall man and
the sight he'd caused on his approach at their end of the table. He
raised a knuckle to his chin in thought, observing what scene was
to proceed. 'He's quite forward isn't he? This is
interesting.'
"See anything interesting, Miss Feryer?" Samton asked without
looking away from his dish. The rather intense stare was hard not
to notice, so maybe she wished to say something?
Samton chuckled slightly at the, frankly rather strange, new
'applicant'. "Well, you're rather subtle, aren't you, Mr.
Morteum?"
The young man in front of him was doubtlessly Klause, the young and
rather tall child of the Morteum family. It was quite usual to hear
rumours about him, the so-called 'freak among freaks'. His giant
stature had certainly earned him quite the reputation, although not
necessarily helpful. A considerable candidate for an ally, though,
since Samton did not care enough to fear the Morteum family. It was
mostly just fear of the unknown, he had guessed.
Klause hunched over, with a grin forming on his face. “Klause
Morteum, pleased to make you acquaintance. There isn’t a disease in
this kingdom I can’t cure, or a disease that I can’t make” he
announced while taking his hat off. “I’ve heard a lot about you Mr
Goldenbach, and I don’t plan on wasting this opportunity. You’ll
want me as an ally” he said while putting his hat back on. Klause
had a wide smile, not one that seemed nervous but it didn’t seem
happy either.
Therese just shrugs, looking towards Samton and Klause, before
pointing at them and tapping Samton's name while adding some
additional information, this time in a font more similar to
typewriters than hand-writing.
#149: Goldenbach, Samton. Royalty, Mage affiliations: Earth and
potentially Water. Pleasant personality, very mature for his age
[seventeen] and altruistic. Eloquent with words, likes discussing
anything.
Notes: A little touchy about pronouncing his name incorrectly. Caution!: Behavior shows surprising maturity, little to no
mistakes or free-spirited malpractice. Hypothesis: Family issues,
of the severe kind. While royalty or power has not corrupted him,
his past might leave gaps open for insanity to manifest. Contact
with caution.
Beneath, she scribbled back in her normal style and taps on her
scribbles. He seems like a good one. Let's try grouping up with him.
You know the first rule in combat?
Shoot them before they shoot you.
"No, no, Samton. Nothing of that sort. I was just planning to
ask....something. I just didn't want to be rude, and interrupt the
lovely, pleasant atmosphere of this meal. I suppose I just got lost
in thought thinking whether or not I should ask my question."
Thalia's voice is honest, but the smile she had was seemingly
sinister. Thalia diverted her attention from Samton, soon spotting
Mira. She walks over to Mira, curtsying as she greeted her. "Good
evening' Thalia says, smiling. She listens in for a bit into the
conversations around her, before leaning back casually "It seems a
lot of people want Samton in their circle. Interesting" she remarks
"I don't really want Samton in the circle." Luna explained, "I
mean, do hear all the people who want him in their circle? I'm all
up for making friends, but I have a weird feeling about this." She
stabbed at a piece of rice to emphasize her point. "And besides, I
don't want many social encounters." She winced at her wording. "A
pleasant personality is good, but we don't really know what his
thoughts are. For example, you probably don't know much about my
history."
I have no friends due to the massive hole in my heart. Would you
consider being the one to plug up the hole of feeling?
Kynik would enjoy the rest of his meal in silence, watching the
people around him as he collected his thoughts. He noted a
particular banner on the wall, eyes fixed on it for
distraction.
He still wasn't a fan of the situation and having to choose so
early. He wasn't quite ready to make claimence to friends, it felt
like he had barely personally met anyone from their class. It
didn't feel right. He'd had less time to figure his classmates out
than he did with the Margrave's son and his friends before they
ditched him.
A hand folded down next to the empty plate, fork placed in a proper
spot. Of the people he had talked to personally, he only knew
Xavier, Thalia, Sampton, Tien, Juzi, Riley, Elliot, Mira and Klaus.
Based on observation and his exchanges, they all seemed fairly easy
to get along with.
Kynik closed his eyes still thinking, practically meditating in
place. As an endurance fighter who wielded the sword, it would be
easiest to only consider a balanced party. Elliot used the bow, an
archer was always useful. Riley wielded the Axe, a potential
strength based fighter.
A mage... a mage... Mira... Juzi... He didn't know everyone's
elements. Sampton seemed skilled in both his magic and a sword
which could be incredibly useful. He'd probably stick with Tien
who'd already left a strong positive impression on the currently
silent male. 'I shouldn't bother them, they have a strong
presence and I'm likely to get in the way when more than just Klaus
come storming in.'
He opened his eyes and looked towards the head of the hall,
scratching the back of his head. It wasn't going to be that simple,
building a balanced team meant nothing when he felt he didn't know
them well enough. The newfound problem was only going to cause
stress to the 18 year old whose lack real social experience was
going to become quite prominent.
Swords... swords and strategy were easy. People were much more
complicated.
"An honour, Mr. Morteum. If I may ask, why me?" Samton narrowed his
eyes. It was brave of him to approach so early, and be so forward
with it. Compared to the usual secretive and scheming nature of the
nobility, certainly a step in the right direction, as far as Samton
was concerned. Still, to agree or disagree on this alone would
simply be premature.
In reply to Thalia's answer, Samton allowed himself a small
chuckle. "Very well. If you wish, do meet me after the dinner."
