I saw the other man lying motionless on the ground. Maurina must have killed him. I was happy to have someone as strong as her with me. She was saying something but I couldn't make out what it was. Suddenly the wolf jumped between us, barking and snarling at me. Stupid beast. How dare he keep me away from Maurina! I let out a growl and smacked it aside. It flew with a yelp, slamming into a tree, then lying motionless at the base. No more obstacles. I had to make sure Maurina wasn't hurt. I grabbed her gently around the waist with my tentacles, lifting her up to eye level. Why was she struggling? It was me Jacob. I wasn't going to hurt her

He'd hurt Brutis! Brutis lay there motionless, like a ragdoll. I stared at Jacob, horrified.
"LET ME DOWN! I need to make sure Brutis is all right! JACOB! Let me down!" I screamed, trying to bring Jacob back to himself. When he didn't show any sign of relenting, I stopped struggling.
"I was wrong! Again! You're going to take my will just like Seth did!" I yelled at the creature who'd taken over Jacob. The sweet kind guy who'd held me last night had to be there! He just had to be! "Jacob wouldn't do this! He was sweet and gentle! Jacob! Fight it! Take yourself back!"

My mind was muddled. Why was she so upset? I saved her, didn't I? I placed a hand against the side of my head. I-I had to stop. I had hurt Brutis. I needed to put Maurina down and help him. The monster struggled against me. No, she is ours. We won't let her go. But the way she was looking at me. It pierced my soul. So much fear and anger. Did she hate me? I need to put her down. Let her go! I pressed my hands against the sides of my head, moaning as I waged mental war. We won't put her down. We will make her love us. My control slipped for a moment. My tongue, which was long and pointed at the end, snaked out to touch Maurina's face, much like a snake might do. One of my tentacles snaked down, caressing the inside of her thigh. We want her No! I couldn't! Not after what she's been through. I wouldn't put her through that. I forced the appendage back, holding her slightly farther away from myself. I moaned again, this time in sadness rather than pain. I couldn't hold the beast back much longer. How could I protect her from me? Suddenly there was a flash of burgundy, and something hit me like a truck. I dropped Maurina, and tried to defend myself for whatever it was that had attacked me.

"Jacob! Fight it! Don't let it hurt me! Please!" I cried as it touched me. "I don't want to! Please!"
Jacob's eyes cleared for a minute. "Yes! Jacob! Come back! Please!"
Then out of no where, Chief rammed into the back of him. He'd run full force into Jacob using his newly discovered powers. I raced towards Brutis to check on him. I gently checked his neck. He shook himself before I could check. He sneezed at me and narrowed his eyes at Jacob. He growled.
"Stay here!" I told him, getting back up. I put myself between Chief and Jacob. "Jacob, please! I know you're in there! Please!"
I reached out and put my hand on his cheek. I searched his eyes for him. Then I whispered, "Come back to me, please."

That voice... The voice of love, begging me to return. Her hand on my ruined cheek felt soothing, like water flowing gently. I had to fight. I had to get back to her! I tried to change back, but I didn't rally know how. I couldn't move from the spot I had landed. It wouldn't let me. "M-Maurina... I'm s-sorry... It's t-too strong... I d-don't think I c-can fight it. Help me please." My mind was weakening. If I couldn't change back soon, I would have to stop it. I would have to destroy the monster, even if it killed me.

"Jacob! Yes you can!" I told him fiercely. Without thinking, I leaned into him and kissed him. I didn't care about how he looked! It was the beast that had taken over that I didn't like. I pulled him tightly against me, my fingers tangled in his hair as I made him remember how to return to me. Breathless, I pulled back slightly, "Come on Jacob! Fight it!"

Her voice had sharpened. Was she angry? No, this wasn't anger. This was love, in all it's cruel fury. Maurina wanted me to come back, and she wasn't going to take no for an answer. I would not be the one to bring sadness and disappointment to her again. I would fight. I would win! Using all my strength I forced the monster down, back to the cage I had long hidden it in. I would never let it take over again. I involntarely let out a blood curdling scream. My limbs shrank, and the strips of flesh fell limply against my back. Fangs and claws turned back into teeth and nails. My mouth sealed back to it's correct length as I fell back limply. My whole body burned as the broken pieces fit themselves back together. My back, which looked more like hamburger, scabbed over. Almost instantly the scab crumbled leaving fresh skin and muscle in its place. The wounds on my face were only minor cuts now. As the world faded all I could do was say, "Thank you Maurina..."

"Jacob!" I cried out as he fainted in my arms. I held him close and kissed his forehead. "Brutis, I need your help."
He came over and sniffed Jacob. His tail lay limply and then began wagging it franticly. He began to lick Jacob.
"Bru, please, give him space! Now, we need to get him to the water. I'll need it to help clean him," I told Brutis. He crouched low and let me gently guide Jacob over his back. "Thank you Chief," I held the horses head in my hands. "You helped save him."
I lead the horses and Brutis over to the lake. Remembering Jacob didn't like the water, I left them a good hundred yards from the edge of the water. I grabbed a clean shirt and dunked it in the water. I came back and washed off Jacobs face.

For the first time in a while my dreams were peaceful. I dreamt of an open field in the woods, with a small house in the distance. Maurina sat beside me, her hand in mine. We sat quietly, just enjoying each others presence. On my finger was a small ring. A matching one wrapped around Maurina's. And I was happy. I awoke to something cold and wet on my face. Opening my eyes I saw Maurina sitting next to me, cleaning my face. I reached for her hand, but hesitated. Did she still like me after what I had done? I wouldn't blame her if she hated my guts.

"Jacob!" I snatched up his hand in mine, "I was so worried! Are you okay?"
I leaned into him, hugging him to me and kissing his jawline. He had to be alright! He just had to be! But The way I'd talked to him... would he be angry with me?
Brutis whined, jumping around us.
Leona rested her head on my shoulder while Chief looked at Jacob with a mix of anger and concern.

I hugged Maurina tightly to me. Her actions told me that, to my surprise, she didn't hate me. Tears began to roll down my face. "Maurina... I-I'm so sorry. I didn't mean... I didn't want to..." It dawned on me that I had wanted to. In that moment when I held her, every fiber of my being had lusted after her. If Chief hadn't showed up, who knows what would have happened. Sobs racked my body. "I-I know that apologizing won't ever make up for what I tried to do, but I'm so so sorry." My throat seized up, preventing further speech. I just held her and cried.

"That wasn't you Jacob! You are Bruce Banner and that was your Hulk! It's not the same! You aren't the same as that! You stopped him, you saved me!" I cried, holding him close. I kissed him them, satisfying my own need to assure myself it was him. He tasted of salt water from the tears he'd cried, but I'm sure I tasted the same. Pulling back for a breath, I told him, "You control it! I saw you defeat it. Remember you're strong then it could ever be. Because you know what love is! Not just lust!"

That kiss meant more to me than she could know. It told me that even with the horrible things that I had done, she still trusted me enough to extend her love to me. It was a precious thing, something to be treasured. But doubts still hung in my mind. I had beaten it this tie, but what if the monster came back? What if it was simply waiting for a moment of weakness before it struck? I heard my fathers voice in my mind. 'Always remember that if you cast the darkest shadow, it just means that you also shine the brightest light. And light will always overcome dark' Those words gave me hope, as they always had. If my monster ever tried to break free again I would fight. And I would not lose. I took Maurina's hand in mine. I kissed her, tasting the salt from her tears on her lips. It wasn't the most passionate kiss, but it wasn't meant to be. It was the physical expression of my love, with no lustful desire. Just love. "Maurina Waters, I love you. Please don't ever forget that. Even in the darkest times, I won't ever stop loving you"

He told me he loved me! My heart soared! He was so..so...well, back before the world ended, I would have only dreamed that someone like him would notice me! I'd never dated before in my life, so I had no idea how to act when a guy liked me back. That's what made it so easy for Seth to get me to come with him! I knew Jacob was different. I could feel it in my heart and soul! Against all odds, I trusted him to look out for me and protect my heart. I wanted to grow old with him! To sit on the porch of our home, sipping sweet tea and enjoying each others company. And maybe children would be apart of that picture too, if he wanted kids. I wrapped my arms around his neck and hissed him passionately. "Jacob Finestro, I will never doubt that! I love you, too."

I held her close to me as we kissed. It was wonderful! I had never met another girl like her. I loved her more than life itself! We sat for a long time, locked in love's embrace. The horses had wandered into the field, while Brutis stood guard nearby. I didn't want this moment to ever end, but all too soon, thoughts of our mission crowded into my mind. Breaking off a particularly passionate kiss, I spoke. "As much as I would like to stay here like this forever, we need to get back to work. We still have people to save." I leaned forward to touch hers. "We can get back to this later though."

"Promise?" I asked, standing up. I was defiantly going to explore this...wondrous new feeling between us the next chance I got. I didn't want to leave the safety of his arms, but the sooner we got saving those people over with, the sooner I could be in his strong, sure arms. And kiss his soft, gentle lips.

I kissed her once more. "Of course." We called the horses back over to us, and mounted. After about a half an hour of riding, we finally reached the suburban outskirts of the city. "Well. Let's start looking. Just remember to tell me if you see an Ex. Their usually much stronger in the city."

I nodded and patted Leona's neck. I stayed close to Jacob and kept Brutis close to us. The horses had grown used to his presence. "What if we can't find them? Should we set a time limit? I think we should leave and wait outside the city if it gets dark before we find them."

"Hmm. We definitely don't want to be out here in the dark, but I think that we should use one of these houses instead of sleeping outdoors again. This close to the city we would risk an Ex wandering right into our camp. At least in the houses we can barricade the entrances." Before Maurina could reply, I spotted something coming out from behind a house. "Hide quick!" I said in an urgent whisper. We moved silently into an open garage. I peeked around the corner, hoping to get a better look. The creature was inches from my face. I let out a shout jumping back, but it just stood there, staring at me with blank eyes. The thing stood about six feet tall and was the color of fresh salmon. Two ears perched high atop its head and it had a long pointed nose. It had bite marks in several places on its body, and the skin had turned green around those spots. Some of its face had been torn away to reveal its skull. But the most notable thing about it was its right hand, or rather lack of one. Instead of a hand, a large, yellow, sharp looking bone protruded from its arm. It grunted at me before turning and walking in a different direction. I was baffled by what was behind it. Twelve more creatures, almost identical to the first, loitered in the street. Since when can Ex be the same thing?!

I was not about to go anywhere without him! I followed Jacob and stood right behind him. I jammed my hand in my mouth to keep from crying out when the Ex appeared. I grabbed Jacobs hand, reassuring myself I wasn't alone.
"What...What are they?" I whispered, "Did an Ex have a power to infect them like that?"
