"I-I have no idea! I've never seen something like this before!" The
group of Ex seemed entirely uninterested in us. They simply
wandered around the street aimlessly. Then it happened. One of the
zombie things wandered by a large bush. As quick as lightning a
large reptilian monster latched onto its neck, pulling it to the
ground. The other twelve turned letting out a horrible screech. All
of them charged the thing, biting and cutting with their bone
weapons. The reptile was no match for the zombies. It fell
squealing beneath them. When they were finished, the zombies went
back to wandering, along with the one who had been attacked. The
corpse of the reptile shook violently, before changing to look like
one of the zombies. It to began to wander. "Well that answers your
question on whether they can infect. I think we'll be fine, as long
as we don't hit one."
"I don't like it down here," I told him, shifting nervously. The
streets and alleys lent too many hiding places for ambush. I'd
always liked open spaces better then these cramped and crowded
streets. Maybe it was because of the wide open spaces lakes gave
me. Whatever it was, I felt safer when I could see an enemy coming
from a distance. "Can we tell Leona and Chief to wait in the woods
where we camped and take to the roofs? Brutis can go up there with
us."
"Sure, thats a good idea." After sending the horses off, we moved
on, being careful not to go anywhere near the zombies. We searched
around a bit in the suburbs, but didn't find anything, except for
more zombies here and there. I guess most of the other Ex know to
stay far away from those things . After a few more minutes, I saw
it. Drawn in white spray paint on an old fence was the symbol. An
arrow next to it pointed in down the street.
It was a very unnerving to be in a city as big as New York and be
the only three beings who weren't zombies. I had my fans out and
open. I wanted to be prepared just in case. Brutis stayed close to
us, sensing the danger of the zombie. When we saw the symbol, I
turned to Jacob and asked, "Is that it? I'm slightly nervous."
"That's the one. Seems pretty simple from here. Just follow the
arrow." We followed the street the arrow was pointing till we came
to another one, pointing off to the left. We repeated this process
for several blocks, till I spotted an odd structure in the
distance. "Uhh, Maurina. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that appears
to be a wall of cars, does it not?"
I was just as stunned as Jacob was! Why would someone go through
all the trouble of stacking all those cars up? And how did they do
it? I wasn't sure I liked the looks of it. "That's what it looks
like to me. But who, or what, put them there? An extremely strong
person like us?"
I stepped closer to Jacob. Brutis stepped in front of both of us,
leading the way just in case of danger.
"Bru, you're very heroic, but come back here," I told him, holding
my hand out so I could hold his collar. It was like a security
blanket. Something I'd done when the world first went to pieces.
"It would have to be a survivor. No Ex would do something like
that." I then noticed that the wall of cars had the symbol painted
on it. "The only reason someone would build walls like that would
be as a defense against Ex. That must be where the people who
called us are." I noticed how nervous Maurina seemed. I took her
hand squeezing it gently. The gesture comforted me as much as it
did her. " Don't worry. We'll be fine. As long as we're together
I'll keep you safe."
I nodded as he spoke. It made sense. I took a deep breath and
smiled at him. I relaxed as he squeezed my hand. "All right. Should
we, um, knock? Or just try to get inside?"
I watched the wall. Suddenly, something moved in one of the cars. I
quickly pointed it out to Jacob.
The thing was in a car near the top of the wall. Suddenly the door
of the car opened, and whatever it was clambered to the top of the
structure. It held it's arms up in the air. "Are you human?!" The
young boy shouted at us. A strange blue glow came from the his
hands. Placing myself between the boy and Maurina, I shouted back.
"Yes! We got a distress call telling us to look for that symbol." I
gestured at the wall. The boy's hands dropped. "You came! We
thought nobody was coming! Quick, get over here." He disappeared
over the wall.
"How should we do that? Just crawl through one of the lower cars?"
I asked, looking at some of the crushed cars. Brutis sneezed and
walked over to one of the cars. He sniffed it cautiously and barked
back at us. "I think he's found something."
I walked over with Jacob and found a trap door. Opening it, there
was a tunnel. Brutis dived in head first and I followed him inside.
On the other side, I opened a door and let Brutis out. Then I
crawled out myself.
Not really wanting to crawl through a dirty hole in the ground, I
teleported to the other side. Once there I help Maurina to her
feet, then turned to the boy. He was probably around twelve, with
fair hair and blue eyes. His hands had large blue crystals
protruding from the skin, and sparking every couple of seconds.
"Follow me." He said turning to run off towards a large mall in the
center of the ring of cars. I glanced at Maurina for a moment,
before walking after him.
I smiled up at Jacob when he helped me stand. After the boy took
off, I shrugged and closed the door. Then I grabbed Jacobs hand and
followed him as we walked after the strange boy.
"So, do you think there are a lot of people here?" I asked Jacob. I
didn't think there could be more then a couple dozen people living
here.
"Well there would have to be at least a few. The person who called
said 'we need help'. Guess there's only one way to find out, huh?"
We made our way across the lot, reaching the entrance a few minutes
later. Surprisingly the automatic doors still worked fine, opening
as we approached. We stepped through into what would have been the
food court, and my jaw dropped. At least two hundred people milled
about, eating, talking, or sleeping, and I could see more farther
down the branching halls. The boy gestured for us to follow him
through a side door. I stood staring at the mass of survivers,
before turning to follow.
I stood behind Jacob, mouth agape at the sheer size of the crowd.
"How do they all live here? There can't possible be enough
provisions!"
Brutis looked at us, then at the crowd. Before he could race off to
sniff everyone, I grabbed his collar. "Nice try Bru, but they don't
know you. And I have no idea how they'll react."
I followed Jacob, my hand firmly in his. The boy from earlier lead
us down one of the large corridors. We waved in and out of people.
Children raced around, some using powers, others just for the fun
of it.
We moved quickly through the halls, finally coming to a door with
the words HQ written on them. Upon entering we found ourselves in a
large confrence room, with a large screen on one wall. "Wait here.
I have to go get the boss." The boy ran off again. I sat in one of
the swivel chairs at the confrence table. "Well, they seem friendly
enough so far, but I'm not sure I trust this place. Why did they
call us in the first place? They seem fine!"
"I don't know...Maybe they're running out of food?" I asked,
scooting my chair closer to him. I let go of Brutis' collar and he
took off to sniff out the entire room. I looked around the room. It
looked fine to me, but I was still guarded. Suddenly, the door
opened and the boy walked in with a very tall, very intimidating
man. He was dressed in a dark suit that looked like it came out of
one of the mall's stores. I didn't know if it was just me, but I
felt suddenly very small and unprotected. I held onto Jacobs hand
tighter. Brutis came back to my side. He looked over the man and
gave a slight growl before sitting at my feet.
The man sat in the chair across from me. His voice was low and
smooth, with a distinct New Jersey accent. "So you two are the ones
Sam talked about, huh? Gotta admit, thought you'd be older." He
reached his hand out. "Name's Pete. I run this place." I shook his
hand, trying to hide my uneasiness. "Is Sam the one who called us?"
I asked. "Wha? Oh no, That was Spec. He felt you two's presence
getting closer, so he sent ya a message. Anyway let me explain." He
spun in his chair. "Back when this whole thing started, I met up
with Sam in this place. Guy was raving! Talking about a prophecy or
something. I thought, Heck stranger things have been happening.
Maybe this guy is legit! So I patched 'im, and had him write down
his 'Prophecy'. It turned out to be a poem. And according to Spec,
you two's life signs match the poem exactly!" Pete then pulled out
a small peice of paper. "Let me read this thing to you."
"The child of doubt will come to us, his virgin bride in hand.
The power they wield is great enough, to cleanse this tainted land.
For years we've toiled in the dark, consumed by hate and fear. All
men rejoice, for when they rise, the dawn is surely near
"I'm sorry," I shook my head sadly, "As much as I would love to
help, and I will help as much as I an! I...I just can't be the
woman from the poem. I..." I looked down at my hands, tears
threatening to fall. "...was taken." I finally managed to say, just
above a whisper. I sat even closer to Jacob. Brutis nudged my hand,
forcing me to pet him. He was so smart and intuitive. I was glad I
had him. I didn't want Jacob to think I was needy. Or have him fall
in love with the idea of saving me. I wanted him to love me for me.
And so far, I think he did. I took a deep breath and calmed myself.
"I'm sorry. I'm alright. Please, continue."
"Well miss, prophecys are fickle things. The future isn't set in
stone. You two are the closest things we have to a fufilment. And
besides, in my mind, if you didn't consent then your spiritual
purity is still there." Pete looked sympathetic. "Anyway, even if
you turn out not to be the virgin bride, he could still be the
child of doubt, right?" I shook my head. "If Maurina is not the one
from the prophecy, then I'm not from it either." I stopped speaking
knowing Maurina would understand my meaning. "We'll do whatever we
can to help, but I can't promise anything."
I looked up at Jacob when he said that. Jacob...did...he
wanted...ME to be his bride? I beamed, hoping I didn't look to
ridiculous. I looked over to Pete. He'd kind of grown on me over
the few minutes we'd talked with him. Brutis had gone over to sniff
him cautiously. "Oh! I'm sorry," I told Pete. "Brutis has a mind of
his own. But he's the loyalist wolf around. He wouldn't harm a fly
unless attacked. And he only hunts when hungry."
Brutis sneezed, apparently approving of Pete. Then he trotted over
to Jacob and me and sat on our feet. I laughed.
