Let me tell you a secret,
The real monsters don't look like monsters~
She'd listened to the teacher lady make her announcement. The presumed students around her were chattering with various degrees of animation. She "slept" and gathered information. She was decent enough at creative things, and a drama camp in seventh grade had taught her to feign sleep like a pro. It also taught her how to blush and cry on command as well as how to fake a stage fall, but none of those were useful skills at the moment.
Powers. They all had powers. They were magical. One boy could see the future, another girl was super smart. They were literally riding in a flying chariot. But she didn't have a magical power. She was... ordinary. So why on earth was she here with them?
AJ kept her breathing natural and tried to go back to sleep for real, but it was impossible. She was too nervous. What would they do to her when they realized she didn't belong here? Wherever here was.
Well, she was still on earth; acceleration due to gravity still felt like a solid 9.81 meters per second squared. There was comfort in that figure. Even though creativity may have been AJ's passion, numbers were what calmed her mind. And she needed to stay calm. Slowly, she began to count.
1.
1, 1.
1, 2, 1.
1, 3, 3, 1.
1, 4, 6, 4, 1.
1, 5, 10, 10, 5, 1.
1, 6, 15, 20, 15, 6, 1.
Paschal's Triangle was best suited for taking one's mind off things. She continued her focused breathing, and remained level-headed.
She would make the best of this situation.

She had arranged her face into a neutral expression, with a hint of wondrous bemusement. What on earth was she doing here? The chariot continued to fly through the sky. AJ had always loved the sky, but had never imagined touching the fluffy clouds she was now flying past. She shivered. They must have flown through one at some point because her clothes were damp with condensation. AJ was unsure again.
1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17...
Breathe.
She watched and waited, playing the part of the unwitting impostor.
