"And those who wait too long may loose their chance." Was the other side of the argument. Determining when was the right time for anything was always a difficult task even for the most experienced of social climbers. "But as they say, fortune favors the bold. Who knows what is to come in the future anyways?" Taking a glace at all those of noble standing who were standing in the shadows alone and simply watching, Yahui passed the empty flute to Mara without looking, probably a mistake when his twin fumbled slightly. Turning his head, Yahui raised an eyebrow (Shut up, you try trying to catch something when you can't see)(Oh I would but we'd lose both of our eyes if I did)(I Hate you so much)(Mhm, keep telling yourself that) before turning back to Eltnam with a apologetic smile. He didn't seem too offended when the other let it slip that he knew who he was, he really wasn't trying to hide it anyways.

Following the other's approximate line of vision, Yahui raised an eyebrow but acknowledged that it would probably be a bad look if they weren't mingling among other gentry members. Public image, after all, was highly fickle and had to be strictly managed. Thankfully, his own image as a political schemer always worked to get him out of the obligatory dances and here he would use it to his favor. "And I bid you farewell as well. As much as I enjoy your company, I'm afraid I must move on. There's a senator I think I spot who has been quite staunchly against my policies this past quarter so this might be the opportunity needed to finally sway her. My, did anyone get the memo that this was a Masquerade? That mask barely does anything to hid her face." Sighing at the audaciousness of some people (says the idiot who hasn't even covered up half his face) he bowed and left to make his way over to his next victim conversation partner, already gearing up to sweet-talk his way through yet another stubborn old coot.

Heiress Emika/Lady Darling Desire

Heiress Emika gazed about the ballroom as she spoke with the fellow noble...

Lady Eris Everlast

Lady Eris was surprised when someone approached. She had been spotted? Yes, she had been. The man was addressing her. She gazed at him for a few moments before accepting the outstretched hand he offered her. With a shy smile, she nodded.

“And some things feel better when taken rather than given, wouldn’t you agree? And on another note, everyone here, yes they all do stand a chance at the throne, do they not? So how are you supposed to make yourself stand out? I’m sure you bothered to come mainly because of the chance to become the next heir.” The marquess gestures to Eltnam, with the other on Emika’s shoulder. “Observe that man. He has charm, and he is bold to approach the Princess so quickly.” She then points to Alastair. “He’s fashionably late, yet hasn’t made any moves yet. Probably choosing to stick to observing first, to be able to better secure his chances as heir. Or he just came because he feels obliged to.” She then points to both Yahui and Mara “Then again, a ball is a good chance to win others over, is it not? We believe in different things, hold ourselves up to different values and have a desire to achieve different goals. With so many nobles gathered in one place, it’s easy to feel the urge to use this time to win more people over.”

Thoroughly bored of standing in the shadows, Yuwaku (who I shall call Yu from now on) dispelled the smoke with a elegant wave of her hand, stepping out of the shadows towards Yahui, inclining her head and giving them a sly smile. "Hello there, care for a dance?" Yu procured a glass of wine out of seemingly nowhere, and began to sip it delicately. she wrinkled her nose delicately and set down the glass. "A bit sour for my taste, but that's just vintage for you." Tsuki meanwhile, approached Emika, face open and inviting. they waved as they got closer, whistling cheerily. "Hello! You must be Emika, I've heard so much about you! your mask doesn't do much to hide your identity, I'd recognize you from a mile away!" they said all this super fast and chirpily.
I stopped caring, I'm past that point in my life.

In the process of bidding farewell to the next victim senator who had very amicably seen the ways that his policy could potentially bring in more capital as well as drive up tourism within his barony, he was approached by yet another person which. God, that's annoying (says the most annoying and persistent of them all). Still, Yahui bid farewell before turning around to bow in greeting to the newcomer. "My Lady, that is a bold offer. Most men would assume quite nefariously if approached by a woman of such noble elegance such as yourself." He noted with a raised eyebrow, ignoring the roaring laughter ringing in his head as his personal servant graciously took away Yahui's empty flute. If this new mystery woman was right about one thing, it was that vintage wines were much too dull though he did appreciate the sour notes. Some wines simply didn't taste very good. "Though I am not such a fool as to turn down a dance. Tell me, My Lady, do you prefer to lead?"

Yu grinned, flourishing her hand. "Why of course my dear fellow, I always come out on top. Tell me, can you keep up with my pace though? I find most gentlemen like you have two left feet, even if the best tutors from across the nine worlds come to teach them. How about we lead with something simple, the lifting spin maybe?"
I stopped caring, I'm past that point in my life.

Oh, this would be interesting. Not many court ladies were bold enough or willing to break away from tradition so the rare ones who did always were worth making allies of. "I'll do my best to meet your expectations then." Yahui promised, grabbing the tails of his coat and dipping into an almost picture perfect curtsy though it was clear he wasn't quite used to doing it. Taking the ladies proffered hand, he flicked a quick hand signal to his twin before laying his other hand on her clothed shoulder, taking up position. Unlike the curtsy, it was clear that Yahui had practiced the following role, his steps elegant and sure. It was odd to be sure, yet he moved with the confidence of any other court lady who was taught from birth how to dance; full of grace and fluidity. Perhaps it was the fact that a platter of roasted duck weighed more than he did that made dancing with him so simple, one could quite easily just move him around if only the intent was there.

Yu smiled, giving none of her thoughts away as she began to dance, making Yahui sway to the beat like a puppet, moving in a controlled yet elegant manner, it was clear Yu was used to and had down this many times. Swooping behind Yahui, they lifted them up from behind and twirled them around effortlessly, much to her surprise. setting Yahui down, she stared curiously at him. "You weigh surprisingly little."

It was a bit surprising to be picked up so effortlessly, but he adapted quickly and let Yu do as she pleased before setting him back down. The moment his feet touched the floor again, Yahui took the lead for a mischievous few steps, taking advantage of that curious moment, before the other took up the reigns again. "Hmm, am I? I suppose it's only to be expected when I prefer to fight with words rather than swords." He hummed, not too surprised. Afterall, one of Mara's favourite pranks was sneaking up and throwing him over their shoulder and running off to lock him away from his office. Perks of having a twin who's only source of entertainment was harassing their hard working brother. (More like saving you from overworking yourself to death)(Much obliged, sibling mine, but try not to break my back when you valiantly save me from myself)(Dully noted, I'll only try and break your neck then!) "I must acknowledge though, you certainly do not boast of your skill. Most of those who would lead with a man pale in skill when compared to you."

Eltnam's gaze was stolen by the people dancing. He seemed like a statue, the way his hand was offered to the lady while the other arm was showing off the direction he intended to go. That didn't last long, however, when instead of receiving a verbal response he felt her gentle hand placed upon his. Slightly surprised as he were,he turned back to face her and nodded back. He gently held it and guided her to where the rest were dancing, using his free hand to make space for them among the crowd.

When they finally got there after a few steps,he stood in front of her.,still holding her hand. She hadn't spoken a single word. "Ahh- I'm sorry if I was too forward." From the looks of it,she didn't mind. Eltnam assumed if she didn't want to dance she wouldn't have accepted his offer in the first place, though her silence worriedh im a bit. "Now,is there any dance you prefer?" Truth be told,he wasn't that good of a dancer,he knew the steps of some dances, because as a noble it was somewhat mandatory, and had a good sense of rhythm but there weren't many times he actually danced outside of lessons and maybe one or two occasions. That also allowed for the elegant lady to feel more comfortable with a dance of her choice. It'd be way too one-sided if Eltnam was deciding everything.

Heiress Emika/Lady Darling Desire

"Indeed." Lady Emika said to Marquess Apate. Her attention was drawn away from the marquess when another approached. Hearing her name being called out so casually was a little disconcerting, but she pushed it down. She put on a smile. "All good things, I hope?" She replied to the fellow noble, another Lady.

Lady Eris Everlast

Lady Eris smiled shyly. She had the choice? Interesting... "Perhaps a simple Waltz will do." she said. "I am unsure about you, but anything else seems a bit inappropriate for now."

Ah! That one he knew! "A Waltz it is then..." he replied. He was taken aback by how cute and shy Eris was being. Was that just all a big act to make him more vulnerable? Either way,he adjusted the height and grip of their hand into position for Waltz. "Your worries about me are...unfounded. Perhaps you would like to elaborate?" he said as he moved his other hand closer to hold her waist before coming to a rather abrupt and awkward halt before coming in contact. Waltz is commonly performed in a closed position, meaning the dancers will have to employ body contact or at least body support. The least Eltnam would wish to happen at this moment was to make a scene. Though,it is something he desires,he doesn't want to be on the receiving end of it. Placing one's hand on a woman's waist when they don't know each other and without consent was a one-way trip to getting kicked out and dirtying his name. Instead,he held his arm there and waited for any sign of confirmation, even though she was the one who suggested Waltz. There's no way such a sweet and shy girl could think of such a cunning test of morals and decency.

Lady Eris Everlast

Lady Eris gave a nod, consenting to the positioning, and spoke, "Many tend to stay away from me naturally. Besides that, many dances for a ballroom are much more... intimate than the waltz. I hope that's alright?"

Kai was busy observing the scenes that unfolded in the ballroom, and decided it was time to enter the fray herself. It was somewhat quieter now, more people choosing to dance. Masquerades always had some charm of their own. Her gaze settled on a particular masked figure, who lingered somewhat in the shadow of another. She quickly noticed the similarities of their faces, and made the connection that they were the twins of House Malakos, the one dancing with lady, she figured was Yahui. She approached Mara, giving a gentle curtsy. “Marquess Mara. I’m glad to see you both could make it.” She offers her hand to Mara, asking “Care for a dance?”

Meanwhile, Apate bows to Emika before leaving her side, going instead to Alastair. “What’s on your mind, brooding stranger?” She asks, ensuring he had his personal space, yet making it so her presence couldn’t be ignored, and her voice could be heard.

Pressed against the wall were the other personal servants were, Mara kept their face turned towards the dance-floor. It wasn't like they could actually see what was going on as they were looking through their brother's eyes. It was disgusting, watching the two dance and their twin be picked up effortlessly and Mara couldn't help but quip in whenever they could. So really, dressed in garbs only fitting for a servant and being tucked away, they weren't expecting anyone but their twin to even approach them.

It took an embarrassingly awkward time for Mara to even notice than anyone was talking to them, tapping into someone else's eyes out of sheer boredom and annoyance at their brother's antics that they even noticed the Princess herself. Mara was going to actually die and they hastily bowed with due reverence any servant would give and even more for their rudeness. "Ah, Your Grace a thousand apologies for this lowly one's ignorance and brazen rudeness," They stammered out, voice hoarse and straining from disuse. "But I'm afraid you misunderstand, I am nothing more than Master Marquess Yahui's personal servant. As honored as I am to be wrongly named as The Young Master Marquess, to insinuate so would be..." Trailing off, Mara winced as if the implications were too much to speak of in the presence of such fair company. The Malakos march never did look fondly upon the second twin

Kai lets out a small laugh, claret orbs twinkling with amusement. “The royal family regards you as of noble blood, you are just as qualified to be here.” She then pulls a long scroll out from her pockets, tracing the names on it before pointing to his name, written plainly among the list of other invited nobles. After making sure Mara had seen the scroll, she snaps her fingers to summon a servant, whom she orders to keep it away safely with a warm smile. She then turns back to Mara. “You know, Mara…no one has ever turned down my offer to a dance. I am a princess after all.” She grins, keeping her tone light and free from accusation. “So, I ask you once again, with status aside, will you dance with me?”

(Help me. Oh my gods, if you love me even one bit please help me. Her Highness of all people caught on. What do we do I'm not supposed to be here Father is going to actually going to banish me as a slap on the wrist. I don't care if you're having a lavender marriage moment, I'm going to get murdered either by Father or by the Royal Family themselves. If I refuse to dance with her because Hello, I'm still a servant, the Royal Family will lose face by dancing with someone way way lower than their social class but if I refuse then Father looses face and the family will be after my ass. What do I even do in this situation?!)

(Yahui?)

(OH YOU SON OF A W-)

(That's your own mother you're talking about, dear sibling mine)

That was it, Mara was going to murder their twin in cold blood the moment they reunited. Mark their words, Yahui's body was going to be found in some backwater alley and no one would be able to figure out his cause of death. Gulping, Mara only bowed even deeper to Kai. "I'm sorry, Your Grace. No matter what you think, I am still a servant. To see a Princess engage in such an activity with someone no better than the lint on her overcoat will not bode well with you. Please, excuse me." Stealing the sight of the Princess herself for the barest moment, Mara used it to map their escape before blending into the rest of the crowd and with the bustling servant's that weaved in between the many many guests

Kai was even more amused at the Marquess, but decides to respect their choice nonetheless. Or at least she appeared to be so. A servant rushed over to her the moment their conversation finished, and she leant down to hear the hurried whispers of her servant. Her lips purse, just for a fraction of second, but it’s clear whatever her servant just whispered to her was not good news. Brushing off another noble who wished to dance with her, she held her fan open, in her left hand. The servant seemed to understand, because as Kai left the ballroom, the servant followed, the two discussing. A while later, however, Kai returns, now wearing a completely different dress, but the same mask. She seems a little flustered, but much more composed now. She looks grave as she whispers to her parents, and upon her return there seems to be more servants standing around, presumably acting as guards

"Yeah! That's perfectly alright!" he exclaimed, nodding. "Many tend to stay away from you...naturally? How so?" he said as his arm rested itself on her waist, providing the support necessary for the dance to commence. He tried really hard to not accidentally slip up and rest his hand somewhere it shouldn't and he tried twice as hard to not have any deviant and immoral thoughts. Though Mara would definitely enjoy making a fool out of Eltnam since he was probing his mind.

"I find it hard to believe that men, well, people," he corrected as he initiated the dance, slowly leading ",are repulsed by one such as yourself." He was well aware that he had only drank one glass. The lady in front of him was proper and gentle, meaning he wasn't being delusional from the alcohol. As he somewhat skillfully stepping and turning,he noticed Yahui was also dancing and with a lady who seemed to lead...a bit differently than Eltnam was used to seeing. Even though they only had a somewhat superficial conversation,he was pleased that Yahui was enjoying himself as well since he didn't think Yahui would accept to dance. His attention then refocused on Eris, the lady she was a breath away from, looking at her in hopes of engraving this occasion in his mind.

Dutchess Anneliese Harlow strode into the ballroom with the perfect amount of confidence for people to notice her entrance, and then ignore her. She found a place by the window, and began to watch. She could tell who was unconfident and who was faking it. She could tell who was avoiding whom.

Annee had no allies in the court. Everyone forgot about Austet, even though it made up nearly a quarter of the empire's revenue. She was rarely invited places, and barely even knew her contemporaries. She wondered who would approach her; at an event like this, one could never get a moment of peace and quiet. Whoever it was, she hoped that they wouldn't be terribly boring. Economic and political matters of the state were interesting enough when presented in the right light, but what she wouldn't give for someone with a brain cell.

She watched the courtesans flirt idiotically. No one was here for love. She wished the royal family would just get on with the proceedings. Mindless drivel was not her cup of tea. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a somewhat familiar face: Prince Lysander.

Everyone had heard of him; the rumors surrounding him made sure of that. But most curiously, the Prince of House Velerii seemed to be doing the same as her. Observing. Intelligently enough, at that.
It was never meant to be.
