Let me tell you a secret,
The real monsters don't look like monsters~
They were pulling into Hogsmeade Station. The doors opened smoothly, and they exited. Our heroes immediately heard the call of a giant.
"Firs' years! Firs' years over here! C'mon, follow me -- any more firs' years? Mind yer step, now! Firs' years follow me!”
The largest human that the students had ever seen stepped forward into the light, and sheparded the first years over to a rocky path that appeared to be leading to a lake. He wore an old tattered coat, held a large lantern, and had an enormous ring of keys at his waist. He had a wild mane of hair and tangled brown beard, but a kind face.
The man appeared to already know some of the students, and it was whispered through the group that he was Hagrid, the keeper of the keys. As they clambered down the steep slope, Hagrid announced that they would soon be able to see the school for the first time.
The students could feel excitement through every inch of their beings as they absorbed every detail of the majestic castle. It was even larger and more beautiful than had been imagined. One could scarcely make out a large bridge, peaks, and turrets by the skyline. The magic in the architecture manifested itself in chaotic towers sprouting every which way - from roofs, the facade, and even from other towers.
They traveled in boats of four. Friends sat together, and introductions were made. As the boats glided across the still lake, the students took in a cluster of smaller buildings on one end of the grounds, a large arena, and a sinister but beautiful forest that continued as far as the eye could see. By the edge of the forest, the keen-eyed children could see shadowy figures moving around, presumably some of its residents, getting a good look at the return of the students.
Many had read that the Hogwarts forest was home to some of the rarest species on earth and doubled as both a barrier for the campus and a magical preserve. It was one of the most dangerous places in all of magical Britain, but that didn’t stop the rush of curiosity some were overcome with.
Looking down over the edge of the boats, they were surprised to see dim lights glowing gently from underneath the surface of the water. One could barely make out the blurry shape of what appeared to be a city in the distance underneath the lake. The lake was home to one of Britain’s largest colony of merpeople and they were responsible for the structures.
A large shape passed under the boats, slicing through the watery depths effortlessly, and students from the neighboring boats shrieked.
“It’s jus’ the squid,'' Hagrid bellowed. “He’s a friendly bugger so long as you don’t provoke ‘em.”
The boats were propelled into a passage under the school and landed on a shore. The students stepped out of them and approached an ornate doorway. Hagrid pushed his way through the mass of the students to the front of the line. He held up his lantern and knocked on the door. Almost immediately it opened up in front of him, and the students were discharged into the care of another professor.
He introduced himself as Professor Flitwick. The Professor’s name had been on the Hogwarts letter under the listing of Deputy Headmaster, and in contrast, he was the shortest man many had ever seen. After leading them through a twisting route, the students arrived at their destination.

The first years had been left alone in an antechamber inside the castle off the main entrance hall. Professor Flitwick had explained the very basics of houses and rules at Hogwarts but she knew no one had paid much attention after the professor had mentioned the “test” they would undergo to be sorted.
Lady Hogwarts gazed down at them from the roof. It was from these students that she would choose her champions.
