Nghtshade ran up to Fernshade, purring madly. "Congratulations, I knew you would become deputy!"

Fernshade sighed. "Thanks." She mewed blankly and padded to the warriors' den.

"What's up?" Nightshade asked, following her.

She shrugged. "Nothing much." Fernshade mewed and crawled into her moss nest.

"Tell me!"

Fernshade's ears pinned down. "It's not very important. Just the point that Brindlestar didn't keep her promise." She grumbled.

"You never wanted to be deputy, did you?"

"No."

---

"Why not?"

Fernshade's eyes squeezed shut, and she curled up into a tighter ball. "I have my reasons." She grumbled.

"Lighten up, you should be happy!"

Fernshade was annoyed now, to the breaking point. She burst onto her paws, her back arched and her fur straight up. Her sharp teeth bared in annoyance, her eyes pinned back. "Don't tell me that!" She yowled.

Nightshade stepped back. "This isn't you FernShade.."

"Whatever." Fernshade grumbled and rested back down into the moss nest.

Nightshade padded out of her den, she walked over to BrindleStar. "Why is she so moody?"

Brindlestar shook her head. "It's nothing much. She'll get used to it eventually. Its something that links with her past, but I don't know what." The leader meowed.

Fernshade guided Dapplepaw on her hunting position. Nightshade was... somewhere. She didn't quite know since they where training individually. The deputy had been lost in her thoughts until she heard a large thump. Still unfocused, Fernshade looked at the nearby tree. "Try to keep your balance a bit more, Dapplepaw." She meowed patiently. "F-fernshade! L-l-look!" Her apprentice squealed, nipping Fernshade's shoulder with her teeth. "What?" The deputy grumbled, looking the way her apprentice was dreading.
It was a badger.
"No time to fight, back to camp. Go!" Fernshade yowled, and ran towards camp.

There was a loud hissing noise, the badger headed towards it, until Nightshade leaped towards it, sinking her claws into the badger. HoneyPaw was hiding in a tree, watching horrified in a tree. A horde of badgers came charging towards the camp.

Fernshade saw the badgers coming towards camp from a distance, and grabbed Dapplepaw by the scruff. Being a slow runner, her apprentice didn't complain. The brown-furred deputy burst into camp, panting. "EVERYONE EVACUATE FROM THE BACK! THEY'RES A HORDE OF BADGERS COMING TOWARDS CAMP!" She yowled urgently. The elders, queens, and kits were to go first. They left through the emergency exit at the back of the Camp.
They were all gone when the creatures burst into camp. "Leave now, Dapplepaw," Fernshade hissed at her apprentice. The tortoiseshell nodded and disappeared into the crowd of inexperienced apprentices. Her dangerous claws slid out, and the warriors engaged into battle. Fernshade leaped at a badger that was charging towards unexpecting Skydove, and knocked it over. Her claws raged towards the badger's throat, and ripped it out. The creature went limp.

Fernshade was panting, and so were the rest of the badgers. Through the whisk of gray and black stripes, she couldn't see too much. Her head was faint in exhaustion. "Warriors, evacuate!" She ordered, and whoever had heard was probably going towards the exit. Fernshade's claws raked against the badger who was holding down some warrior (she was too tired to check).
"Fernshade!" Cried a frantic yowl from somewhat nearby. The deputy rushed past to the voice. "Help!" The voice pleaded.
It was a small she-cat, barely past a kit's age, and she was splattered in blood and wounds, helplessly clawing at a badger. The badger's teeth yanked at the cat's tail, but the helpless DawnClanner was too hurt to yowl. So she winced instead.
It was Dapplepaw.
Fernshade was too in shock to move as the badger's teeth lunged at Dapplepaw's neck. She couldn't of made it anyways. "Dapplepaw!" The deputy yowled, and leaped to her apprentice. Her claws raked furiously across the badger's stomach, and her teeth sunk into it's neck. She twisted, and the badger fell with a crack. "Fernshade..." The apprentice rasped, in a pool of crimson blood.

There wasn't much use in telling her apprentice that everything would be okay. Dapplepaw was too smart for that. The deputy's nose buried into her apprentice's bloody cheek, and she whispered. "You would've made a great warrior, Dapplepaw.
Have a good life in StarClan." She meowed. Dapplepaw groaned. "Everything hurts," She whined, with a frantic look at Fernshade. Fernshade knew what her apprentice was asking. "Really?" The deputy asked.
Dapplepaw nodded. Fernshade's claws dug into her apprentice's neck, and Dapplepaw limped. Fernshade leaped out of the exit, where all the cats were waiting, huddled under the roots of a tree. Honeypaw and Nightshade were there, too.
"Where's Brindlestar?" Acornfur asked. The leader came from behind Fernshade, with a twisted paw. "I wouldn't leave DawnClan so soon." The leader promised. Honeypaw leaped off of the tree, and bounded towards Fernshade. "Where's Dapplepaw?! I thought she was with you!" The frantic apprentice shrieked. Fernshade winced. "She's gone." The deputy meowed. This sent a hush through all of the clan.
