Okay, so Fernshade had been eavesdropping on the deputy's
conversation with Treepelt. Although, it was pretty interesting.
Treepelt had been scowling the whole time, as Echoshine tried to
squeeze some secrets from him about Nightshade. Echoshine wasn't
that bad, Fernshade just didn't like her.
Nightshade stared at Echoshine, her eyes narrowed. She walked over
to Fernshade. "What has she been saying?" She whispered, wanting to
know what she was talking about with her Mate.
"Oh, she's just suspicious about your heritage." Fernshade
whispered back, her whiskers twitching. "There's nothing wrong with
that, Nightshade. Besides, Treepelt's refusing to tell." She added
as the deputy nodded curtly and crept into her nest.
Fernshade stared blankly, as if she didn't know how to react. "Oh."
She meowed hollowly and er jaws departed with a yawn. "I'm going to
get some shuteye," She mewed and slipped back into the Warriors'
Den.
Fernshade's eye shot open at the racket. She wouldn't mind
Nightshade growling at Echoshine any other time, but it got too far
when it began to ruin her sleep. She wistfully trudged out of the
Warriors' Den, to the two she-cats. "Nightshade, she's just being
curious. There's nothing wrong with that, is there?" She meowed in
a moderate tone, but it wasn't really a question. "--And Echoshine,
stop being so pokey. Nightshade obviously does not want you
interfering with her past, and does it even matter who her heritage
is? She's a loyal warrior, that's all that should be your concern"
Fernshade mewed. Echoshine nodded, as if in affirmation.
"Fernshade, you'd be a much better deputy than I am," She sighed
hastily. "Why is that that you didn't get chosen?" She asked in
curiosity. "None of your concern," Fernshade growled and trotted
back into the warriors' den.
Nightshade knew about an omen sent down about Echoshine to be
deputy. She didn't want to share it with anyone, she padded into
her den and drifted away into sleep.
Fernshade hated mornings. It was so fresh and dim that it just
seemed dead to her. Yet Echoshine just had to put her on the
early border patrol... She grumbled as the brown-furred deputy
rushed urgently into the Warriors' Den, her face like she'd just
seen a million badgers. "Fernshade, come on! The patrol's leaving!"
She meowed in a surprisingly moderate tone, and rushed Fernshade
out of the den.
Fernshade padded into the camp, to be greeted by Acornfur.
Echoshine bounded off to report the border's recent activities, and
the patrol sprawled away from each other without a word.
Fernshade grumbled, her eyes darkening. "Boring as ever." She
replied, her nose wrinkling. Her tail flicked at she glanced at
Echoshine--who was just walking into the leaders' den--murderously.
