"Umm, yes." Moon pinked at Elodie's statement. Holing up in Bliss's room made it sound like she had had a choice. Bliss cared for her and wanted her close. Moon understood that and respected that. Heck, there had even been times where she had enjoyed that.
But there was a conflicting part of her now. She didn't want Lydia to see her like this, to be reminded that she had made her choice, and that choice had been to become Bliss's little pet. She cared what Lydia thought of her.

"There you are." Bliss opened the door unannounced, not even sparing a glance to Lydia. "Moon, you nearly had me send out a fleet. I thought you tried to run." She turned to Elodie. "Have you been doing what I asked?"
"I'm not really sure it needs to be anymore, Bliss. She seems fine on her own with a sober mind." Bliss sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "She's on our side."
"I ask of you one thing... I'll do it myself, then. Come, Moon." She walked away. Elodie looked between the two girls with more than a hint of worry.
"Be careful, darling."

Moon gave a shaky smile to the women in the room, eiliyng Lydia not to do anything. Smoothing down the front of her dress daintily, she stood tall, walking over to Bliss. Her bare feet were silent on the hard floor, her eyes were determined.
"I won't run," she said quietly. "I would never run." She meant it. Because where the heck would she go? If she left, she would have no medical supplies to treat her injuries. If she left she would have no roof over her head, nothing to keep her days occupied.
She dreaded the drugs. Yet still she moves closer to Bliss, doing her duty. The blue dress was tighter than anything that Moon typically wore, showing off her figure, but now, it felt as if it was constricting her airways, stopping her from breathing.

Bliss eyes her warily, then looked down at Moon with a dark expression. "Is that true?"

Her heart was pounding so fast, Moon thought it would escape her chest. Bliss had to be able to hear it from the other side of the room.

"Thank the stars. That could've gone a lot worse, had she known I was lying." Elodie laughed and nudged Moon. "Take a breather. I have snacks in my nightstand drawer."

"Sorry Lydia... Administrative stuff." She tried to smile reassuringly at her friend, but the look likely betrayed her fear. She bit her lip, a crease of worry appearing in her brow.
"Will you have to... Drug me, before she takes me back?" The words almost got stuck in Moon's throat, but she kept them even, trying to stay calm.

"Why are you doing this? I mean, won't you get in trouble? She's going to find out eventually, she always does. It can't be worth it to you in any strategic way to help me." She was very sure that Elodie was making a mistake, and couldn't help but question it. She wasn't worth risking punishment for. It was simply a fact of life, something that had been hammered into her brain for her entire life.

Lydia's question hung in the air for a moment.
"You keep putting yourself down, I noticed that. Why is that? You seem to think you don't deserve help."

Everyone her viewed her as naive, as expendable, as worthless. Her magic was weak compared to theirs. She knew nothing of their world. Her constant questioning, which she already tried to reduce was annoying. And when she tried to act instinctively, to laugh and joke, she was rebuffed. Or drugged. Or thrown into a wall at deadly speeds.
She wanted to try.
But why bother?

her voice was quiet.
"You're a person too, right? I hate it, I hate it when people seem to think they have to give up their own happiness. There are ways to fix things without things like this!"
She was a hopeless optimist.

Moon trailed off, thinking of all the concessions she would need to make, of all the favors she would need to offer Bliss in exchange for Lydia's life if she were to be caught. It was not a pretty thought. Yet Lydia had far more going for her than Moon did. Moon was already bound, if not literally at the moment, than figuratively by her word. Lydia had made no such mistake. The choice was easy. This was logic. This was what Moon accepted at. That didn't stop her selfish desires of wanting people to care about her, of wanting people to put her first. She just understood all too well she couldn't expect to people to go against their own best interests to help her. And her interests rarely aligned with anyone else's, it seemed.

her voice had raised.
"I am dead! I am nothing but a ghost! You are a living, breathing person! Why do you not value your life?"
Lydia seemed genuinely frustrated.
"I don't need you to protect me! I don't need to be protected, because I'm dead either way! Nothing's gonna change that! I don't grow older, and I don't really exist! Everyone will grow old, move on, all without me! I'll be forgotten anyway!"
This... was starting to feel like more of Lydia's own insecurities.

Her objectivity allowed her to see the truth. She was a speck of dust on an infinitly fathomless world. She was worlds away from home, out of her league and trapped. Moon wasn't worth it, Moon wasn't enough. Why would Lydia pretend otherwise? And her brother was a university professor; she was supposed to be smart, too. Dying didn't kill braincells, did it?
