"That one I know too, Lydia," Moon said with a wry grin. "I'm from earth too, remember?" She had missed the girl more than she cared to admit. With her bubbly personality, welcoming demeanor, black and white moral code, her adorable smile...

Lydia Satou was special. Far more special than Moon.

"Umm, yes." Moon pinked at Elodie's statement. Holing up in Bliss's room made it sound like she had had a choice. Bliss cared for her and wanted her close. Moon understood that and respected that. Heck, there had even been times where she had enjoyed that.

But there was a conflicting part of her now. She didn't want Lydia to see her like this, to be reminded that she had made her choice, and that choice had been to become Bliss's little pet. She cared what Lydia thought of her.
It was never meant to be.

"I know! It's so awesome! Have you seen those creatures in Australia? The spiders are so biG! The crocodiles! I love that place!"

She giggled, spinning from her spot 6 feet in the air.

"Well, I'm sure you'd like your own room, no? I'll try to get you one-"

"There you are." Bliss opened the door unannounced, not even sparing a glance to Lydia. "Moon, you nearly had me send out a fleet. I thought you tried to run." She turned to Elodie. "Have you been doing what I asked?"

"I'm not really sure it needs to be anymore, Bliss. She seems fine on her own with a sober mind." Bliss sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "She's on our side."

"I ask of you one thing... I'll do it myself, then. Come, Moon." She walked away. Elodie looked between the two girls with more than a hint of worry.

"Be careful, darling."

...crap.

Moon gave a shaky smile to the women in the room, eiliyng Lydia not to do anything. Smoothing down the front of her dress daintily, she stood tall, walking over to Bliss. Her bare feet were silent on the hard floor, her eyes were determined.

"I won't run," she said quietly. "I would never run." She meant it. Because where the heck would she go? If she left, she would have no medical supplies to treat her injuries. If she left she would have no roof over her head, nothing to keep her days occupied.

She dreaded the drugs. Yet still she moves closer to Bliss, doing her duty. The blue dress was tighter than anything that Moon typically wore, showing off her figure, but now, it felt as if it was constricting her airways, stopping her from breathing.
It was never meant to be.

Lydia had quieted down, watching Moon carefully, like she tended to do. Her smile dropped ever so slightly.

Elodie stood up and grabbed Moon's shoulder. "Actually, I was thinking she stay in my room for the night. We were planning on relaxing for a few hours before we had to go back to work. Is that alright with you?" She tried her best to seem genuine, clouding her mind so there weren't any thoughts coming through.

Bliss eyes her warily, then looked down at Moon with a dark expression. "Is that true?"

"I- yes." Moon nodded. "Elodie did promise me that we would clean up and discuss the project. If you wish me to leave, I mean... But I would appreciate it you allowed me to stay. We believe that we might be able to make a breakthrough once we, er, compate notes. My universes are, after all, quite different from this one."

Her heart was pounding so fast, Moon thought it would escape her chest. Bliss had to be able to hear it from the other side of the room.
It was never meant to be.

"Hm... Very well. If that is what you wish." She shrugged and placed her hand on Moon's head for a moment. "Just remember the rules. I don't want you plotting anything." Turning to leave, she hardly spared a glance to anyone, but managed to say before she disappeared, "And you've braided your hair quite nice."

"Thank the stars. That could've gone a lot worse, had she known I was lying." Elodie laughed and nudged Moon. "Take a breather. I have snacks in my nightstand drawer."

"...you were lying? Then what are we doing instead?" She looked up at Elodie with curiousity, sparkling eyes meeting the vampire's. Her head could still feel the weight of Bliss's hand resting on her braid and temple. The rules that Bliss had laid out echoed within her mind. She supposed the succubus hadn't explicitly forbade lying to her... most likely because she thought that if Moon was incapacitated by the drug twenty-four seven, it would never be a problem.

"Sorry Lydia... Administrative stuff." She tried to smile reassuringly at her friend, but the look likely betrayed her fear. She bit her lip, a crease of worry appearing in her brow.

"Will you have to... Drug me, before she takes me back?" The words almost got stuck in Moon's throat, but she kept them even, trying to stay calm.
It was never meant to be.

"Please don't! I like undrugged Moon more. She actually pays attention to me, and I like that."

"Actually, I've been thinking about you and those stupid things for some time." She walked back to her desk, sifting through piles of things until she found a small plastic-wrapped pill. Satisfied, she handed it to Moon. "In the morning, take that. It's supposed to replicate the energy of the drug- since it's made with Bliss's blood and all- so she'll approve, unnoticed. And it won't have any effects- or side effects- if the drug." She walked away again, to a holographic screen on her wall, and clicked a few buttons on it. "To get rid of the energy gradually, to make it seem real, drink coffee in increments. It's better at flushing the pill out. Honestly, I'm against it. All of it."

Moon nodded, dumbfounded. Elodie was helping her. But-

"Why are you doing this? I mean, won't you get in trouble? She's going to find out eventually, she always does. It can't be worth it to you in any strategic way to help me." She was very sure that Elodie was making a mistake, and couldn't help but question it. She wasn't worth risking punishment for. It was simply a fact of life, something that had been hammered into her brain for her entire life.
It was never meant to be.

"The manor isn't a place for children, you know. You're signing a suicide pact, and if you're going to do that by being here, you should at least have people you can go to. I'm watching out for you- I do it for everyone. The most Bliss will give me is a verbal smack on the head, that's all. She knows I'm not a stone cold killer like everyone else." Music began to play from the record player in the corner of the room, something like a mix of coffeehouse music and classical.

"Anyway, you should relax while you were given the chance. If you have any more questions, I'll answer them to the best of my ability."

"Why do you seem to think taht you have no sort of value, moon?"

Lydia's question hung in the air for a moment.

"You keep putting yourself down, I noticed that. Why is that? You seem to think you don't deserve help."

"...because I don't? I made the decision to be here, to take Iteral's place. The consequences that arise from that decision are my burden to bear. I can rule out emotional attachment from a decision and rule objectively. So objectively, in fact, that I know when to make the necessary sacrifices. I've learned from an early age that one soul, particularly my soul, is not worth all that much." She said this matter of factly, like she was patiently reaching an easy math lesson to a small child. To Moon, this was common sense. She didn't inconvenience others. And while she was trying to grow and find her place in the world, the lesson here was the same.

Everyone her viewed her as naive, as expendable, as worthless. Her magic was weak compared to theirs. She knew nothing of their world. Her constant questioning, which she already tried to reduce was annoying. And when she tried to act instinctively, to laugh and joke, she was rebuffed. Or drugged. Or thrown into a wall at deadly speeds.

She wanted to try.

But why bother?
It was never meant to be.

"You shouldn't have to make sacrifices."

her voice was quiet.

"You're a person too, right? I hate it, I hate it when people seem to think they have to give up their own happiness. There are ways to fix things without things like this!"

She was a hopeless optimist.

"Yes, I'm a person too. But it makes no sense for Elodie to help someone as transient and temporary as me. Incurring Bliss's wrath isn't worth granting me an extra few hours of freedom. It isn't in Elodie's best interests to do that. Same for you: you have been lucky, but it isn't worth it for you to risk capture or death just to see me. You need to stay safe and keep those you care about out of harm's way. There would only be so much I could do to protect you..."

Moon trailed off, thinking of all the concessions she would need to make, of all the favors she would need to offer Bliss in exchange for Lydia's life if she were to be caught. It was not a pretty thought. Yet Lydia had far more going for her than Moon did. Moon was already bound, if not literally at the moment, than figuratively by her word. Lydia had made no such mistake. The choice was easy. This was logic. This was what Moon accepted at. That didn't stop her selfish desires of wanting people to care about her, of wanting people to put her first. She just understood all too well she couldn't expect to people to go against their own best interests to help her. And her interests rarely aligned with anyone else's, it seemed.
It was never meant to be.

"Do you not understand, Moon?"

her voice had raised.

"I am dead! I am nothing but a ghost! You are a living, breathing person! Why do you not value your life?"

Lydia seemed genuinely frustrated.

"I don't need you to protect me! I don't need to be protected, because I'm dead either way! Nothing's gonna change that! I don't grow older, and I don't really exist! Everyone will grow old, move on, all without me! I'll be forgotten anyway!"

This... was starting to feel like more of Lydia's own insecurities.

"Hmm. I don't think I truly realized that you were a displacedish soul. I guess I won't protect you then. Makes my life a little easier. Perhaps I'll have to redo some of my calculations... But it's still not worth it for Elodie to risk the social capital she's built with Bliss to build social capital with me. Bliss has infinitely more power and control. I don't want to die, Lydia. Sometimes I think it might be easier... But that's a whole other issue. I can just see things from a multiple points of view."

Her objectivity allowed her to see the truth. She was a speck of dust on an infinitly fathomless world. She was worlds away from home, out of her league and trapped. Moon wasn't worth it, Moon wasn't enough. Why would Lydia pretend otherwise? And her brother was a university professor; she was supposed to be smart, too. Dying didn't kill braincells, did it?
It was never meant to be.
