He heard the laugh but wasn't affected by it, he just figured his ears were playing tricks on him.

Kaori snapped out of her daze. She swore she could hear Kendo's footsteps, but wasn't he supposed to be dead? She sharpened her hearing, paying attention to any sound her sharp ears caught.

He fiddled with a Rubix cube, nervously pacing around. The cut the rope had cut into his neck was still visible and bleeding, staining his white shirt. He walked around practicing his apology.
