Athena decided she might as well speak. If she was going to get attacked, saying a few words wouldn't change that. "You might as well just get here. I'll try not to slash your head off." Her hand was on her sword, but she vowed to take a careful look before attacking.

Athena hadn't moved. It was Sophie all right, maybe looking a bit strange, but still her friend. "I can't say I'm doing well."

She knelt on the ground next to Athena, and began to gather of all things, rocks. Picking through the jungle leaf litter, she scraped some leaves into a pile.

"I don't really need anything right now." She would have asked what Sophie was doing, but no, just no. As little words as possible. She might be giving the tournament a try, but not going back to being a normal human being. Was she ever a normal human being?

"But I don't care. I don't think I ever will." The words were out of her mouth before she could stop them. Stupid stupid stupid. But it was too late. Everything began pouring out in a flood, all those formerly controlled and held back emotions breaking through and spilling out. "I hate my mother. I hate myself. And I don't care about my future, it doesn't look bright anyways."

Sophie pulled off her blindfold, and hugged Athena. She understood what it was like to struggle, but didn't pretend to know what Athena was dealing with. Wordlessly, she stood there, embracing her.

"You're worth it. You are an amazing person. Please don't define yourself the way your mother does. She must absolutely have no idea who you are." She whispered, furious at the Councillor.

Sobble sees a vine and grabs it. "Come on Calico! Time to go full monkey." Sobble and Calico who was standing a bit more like a human, both grabbed onto the vines and started swinging. "Yeah! This is the life!"

"Why, to prove her wrong, of course. And to prove yourself wrong." Sophie sighed. She wasn't too good at this, was she? But Athena was an amazing person with a life worth living to its fullest.

"You don't need to be the best to know that you're extraordinary, but if you want to be known to others as extraordinary, you need to be one of the best. I think the question you need to ask yourself is what do you want. What do you see yourself as and what do you want to see yourself as? Do the people who's opinions matter to you have your best interests at heart? Because I think the Athena of a week ago was an amazing person with so much going for her."

"Athena a week ago isn't me. How am I supposed to just wake up one day, and 'choose' who I want to be? I am who I am, no matter how much I try to mask it or cover it up. It's still there, and it always will be. Being one of the best isn't going to change anything. I speak from experience." She could see that Sophie was trying her best to cheer her up, but Athena just wasn't in the mood to be cheered up.

Yes maybe some events have happened, Terrie, cruel, demoralizing events. But they don't define who you are, Athena. You do." Sophie paused, listening for enemies.

"You have a choice to roll over and fail like they expect you to, or you can rise up and succeed. Maybe you don't feel strong or smart or brave right now, but you can sure as hell get into this next bracket. You can sure as hell survive. And every day that you wake up fighting is one more time you metaphorically flip them off. So fight. Physically and emotionally."

Maybe, just maybe, deep down, she did want to prove herself. It was one of the reasons she'd been so excited about the tournament when it was first announced, which felt like a million years ago. She had to at least give it a try. Right? Maybe. She'd never felt so unsure about anything. She could take the easy way out, or keep fighting. Which would it be?

Get your act together! Or do you want to live your life being a depressed, useless shell?

"Ready?" She nodded at her friend, and put the blindfold back on. Readjusting to the darkness was a learning curve, but she would take her own advice and fight.

Expanding her senses, she could feel a cluster of people a few thousand meters North. They were unsubtly lumbering through the undergrowth. "There's a group of six up North. Acting like they own the place. I think we go for them next."

Unbeknownst to the two, a thin layer of ice was spreading across the ground, creeping along, slowly, carefully towards them. Kendo stood in the shadows, his scarlet eyes glinting in malice. in his hands, he held the dispersion device, his finger on the trigger.

"Hello, hello, my dear friends. How d'you do, on this fine morning?"

"Umm... Kendo? You okay?" It really was strange how quickly she could return to (normal?) Athena mode after all that. The emotions tucked away and bottled up again, back to cheerful, happy Athena. It was fake of course. Quite very fake. But it was the only way she could continue on. If she let herself fall back on her doubts, she'd never move forwards.

"You don't seem very fine. Also, what's that you're holding?" Would Kendo betray them and try to get them out? She wouldn't put it past him. Her whole body tensed, ready to jump out of the way and take Sophie with her should he try anything.
