I started playing yesterday, i understand the auction and union room and such. you can only send battle requests to people you have the username of. that's no fun. so how can i just do battles? the tall grass area doesn't make sense. can you not just get into random battles?

The only way I know of to have AI battles with Pokémon is to summon and battle a legendary. PokeHeroes is a interaction/Community based site, so the admin doesn't really focus on the battle system all that much. Most of the ways to obtain Pokémon involve eggs

The shadow radar and the safari zones are the only places that you can catch Pokémon but not battle them. Those are really far down the line however unless you grind a lot. Legendary battling is very far down unless you are very lucky to get a map and only certain types can battle, not just any type

Just random battles are not available on PH, as the sites main focus is hatching and collecting Pokemon. You can battle legendary Pokemon for their summoning item (which is pretty tough), or look at the forums to find users who also want to battle. There's a section in the forum just for that :)
