"O-oh, okay. See you!" Winnie called out. She sighed a little, then
walked down the hall towards her locker. Along the way, she mostly
avoided interacting with her schoolmates, with the exception of the
occasional nod or "Hey.". Small talk had never been one of Winnie's
strengths, and the types of conversations her peers held never
really interested her anyway, so what was the point? She stopped in
front of her locker door. She was about to open it, when the school
hallway suddenly began shaking like an earthquake. Winnie leaned
onto the lockers, desperately trying not to fall over.
"Whoa, bud, not a insult. Just i related some... others similar to
you as some of the sentient beings in mythology, or monsters as
you're called." He sighed.
Melody frowned. "Hey, don't ignore me just because I forgot what I
was going to say!" She chased after him, and when she saw the
chaos, she stopped nearby. "W-what the heck is going on here?"
"No idea," Kieran lied, relieved to be away from all the questions
about monsters, which struck a little too close to home. Well
actually, he'd probably just get more questions pushed towards him,
judging by the human he was talking to. "Whats up?" He fiddled with
his hoodie.
"You wanted to know why we chose to come here, right? Well, my dad
writes fantasy novels, and apparently some crazy old man told him
to come here to see monsters. He doesn't think he's going to see
any, but he wants to come here for inspiration. There, I told you I
never leave a question unanswered, and I don't intend to anytime
soon!" She rocked back on her heels, crossing her arms with a
satisfied smile.
"Ah, I see." Kieran couldn't stop a small grin from blossoming on
his face. Melody was just an entertaining person to talk to. He
picked up the mop. "I should probably finish up cleaning... also,
classes start relatively soon," He reminded her. Melody was a
welcome bit of surprise and excitement to the town, according to
Kieran.
"Gah!" Melody glanced at her watch. "You're right! I'm gonna be so
late!" She smacked a hand against her forehead and groaned. "I'll
see you later, 'kay?"
"Got it!" Kieran nodded as he watched Melody turn away. He was
surprised she hadn't asked why he wasn't going to the school,
though he guessed she'd probably wondered about it at some point
and maybe forgot. As he continued cleaning, moving from hall to
hall, he felt a familiar feeling in his core: a nervous one that
occured before the full moon. His work had almost taken it off his
mind. He would probably be fine this time... though it was still
annoying to be forced to be a canine every month. He'd make sure to
get home early to prepare.
Melody spent the rest of the day struggling through her classes.
She finally made it to lunch. As she exited the classroom, she
reached into her bag and pulled out a brown paper bag. "Alright,
let's see what we got here." She reached in a pulled out a peanut
butter and ham sandwich. "Yes! She remembered!" Melody's mom hardly
remembered what she liked. Today was a good day! She entered the
schoolyard and looked for a place to sit.
Kieran was finished cleaning. He decided to take a break himself,
before the school asked him to come back to clean at the end of the
school day. Pulling out the oranges he'd purchased earlier, he
began peeling them absentmindedly, watching the students from the
corner of the cafeteria.
Melody bit her lip. This was always the worst part. Finding
somewhere to sit, especially on the first day. The other students
gave her glances, but no one waved her over or even smiled. She
tried going up to some people but to no avail. She sighed,
shrugged, and noticed a spot in the corner. She walked over, sat
down, and pulled her sandwich out, unwrapped it, and ate it as she
watched her brother charm and talk animatedly with a group of
theatre kids. Then, she spotted Keiran and waved. "Hi!"
Kieran waved back tiredly, with just a small flick of his hand. It
seemed he'd made a friend of sorts. Well, it seemed less of a
"friend and friend" thing, and more of a "Melody being a curious
kitten and somehow finding him everywhere" sort of thing, which
Kieran didn't mind either.
Melody picked up her sandwich and walked over. "You kinda seem like
a loner..do you mind if I join you?" Kerian was the one person that
she had had a proper conversation with, and Melody was kind of
hoping to make a friend so that she could properly enjoy her time
here before they were up and in another new town.
Winnie sighed as she grabbed her lunch from her locker, then made
her way into the cafeteria. She hadn't seen much of her "possible
new friend" that day, so school ended up being just as dreary and
boring as it usually was. Then again, considering the events of the
previous day, Winnie supposed boring might not be such a bad thing.
As she walked through the large doors of the cafeteria, Winnie
peered at the large crowd of students, trying to see if she could
find someone she somewhat recognized.
