Derek was dead silent, the sunken eyes in his pale face taking in everything they landed on. He went about his business quickly, and finished whatever it was he was doing quickly. His eyes could quickly pick out who he might want to introduce himself to, who he might want to avoid, and who might need his protection. He glanced at the sky, then at all four horizons around them.

Wilow sat with her sister in the back of the hoverwagon while Mo held the reigns, Rosemary sat next to Mo and rested her head on her lover's shoulder. Rooster's drunken performance had mad Will chuckle a bit but once she realized that he was guiding them she stoped, Mo hadn't reacted much to Rooster's drunken behavior, a book was more then it's pretty cover.

Willow relaxed some as they started out on their journey, it would be long and dangerous, but there was a pang of excitement too.

Mo steered her hover wagon so that it was almost aside Rooster's, almost. Rosemary looked out at the sun and the horizon, somewhere, was their destination, and with it a new chapter in their life.

Derek kept his eyes mostly on the horizons. He knew the beasts pulling his wagon well enough that they would stop if somebody towards the front of the caravan stopped. Eventually, he tied his reins to the bench and stood up, whooping and hollering and waving his arms. A silhouette high in the sky was slowly approaching, but seemed to speed up with its approach as Derek waved the Flare Falcon down. When it landed on his arm, he pulled a piece of paper from the small tube it carried, then set the beautiful bird inside his wagon. It was a male, shown by the long and elegant tail feathers it had. Unrolling the note, Derek smiled softly, then began to read to himself, a slow tune mixing with the words. It was either a song, or a poem, but it was obvious that it worked as either.

"Why do you frown and cry, dear friend?
Why do you look at the ground?
With Flares in the way up high
And horses gone nigh
There's no good reason to be down, dear friend.

Why do you hug me so long, dear friend?
Why do you say 'Last Goodbye'?
We know we will meet
Again after dawn
When you come to join me in the end, dear friend.

Let us be happy and smile, dear friend.
Let us be joyous and wild.
For when you return,
You'll be on your way,
To meet at the end of the Trail.
"

Geo glanced over the other wagons, watching and observing everyone on the journey. He didn’t really know what journey awaited them, what would be at the end. It made it just that more exciting, but also scary. He sighed and looked over at Gwen, wondering what she was here for.

Rosemary was humming Home on the Range quietly to herself as she looked forward past Rooster and outward. "How long do you think it'll take us to get there?" She asked Mo.

Mo looked at Rosemary. "No clue, it'll take awhile surely."

Gwen catches Geo watching her on the corner if her eye. There seemed to be a questioning look in his gaze. She ties the reigns onto the barrier in front of them. It was odd, her steeds seemed to know exactly where to go. She found she didn't have to put any effort into steering them. It did help that they were her horses. She fought with her mother countless times into not selling them. Somehow her mother allowed it. It was a pity, she had more of a emotional connection to her pets than she did her family. She shakes her head, trying to expell these thoughts. They were in the past now anyway, and her past was quickly starting to become far from her. "So why are you going on this trip?" Gwen asks Geo, voicing his exact thoughts.
...
Hayes had slowed down a bit, people angrily steered around him as he fought one of the horses. Which was now bucking the air. After a few tugs, which seemed to only enrage the horse even more, he manages to calm it down enough to continue moving forward. He glances over at Derek, who he was now side by side with. He was busy reading a message of some sort. "What's that?" Hayes asks curiously.

Luke ties the reigns to the wagon. He goes into the cart and hums a little tune to himself. He was so happy that nobody had tried talking to him yet. He closes his eyes and breathes in the fresh air. He loved the outdoors. He had made friends with an animal. He sent it away so nobody found out a bout it though. He wished that he came back. The animal was the only one that understood his need for aloneness.

Derek snapped out of his quiet singing trance, then looked up and around, pinpointing the source of the other voice. He sat up straight then, and his clothing flapped loosely, quickly revealing how skinny and underweight he really was. While the sun shined dully on others' skin, it simply struck his and didn't reflect. His eyes were slightly shadowed, even as he looked upwards and around. He could be compared to a zombie, maybe even a skeleton. Giving a sort of cheeky half-smile, Derek tipped the slip of paper to reveal the words. His voice was like a whisper. "It's a poem. Maybe a song. I'm not quite sure." He said that, but his name was scrawled across the bottom of the thing, his signature, meaning he had written it. "I should get a few more now and then, from my last settlement. Family might find them in the attic, maybe between two boards." He chuckled a little, his slightly raspy voice warping the sound to nearly unrecognizable as a chuckle. If not for his chest shaking the little bit that it did, he might have sounded like he was dying of thirst.

Hayes had meant to ask Derek about his life or even ask about Derek's writing. It's not often you met someone who is a writer. Instead, Hayes fixes the older boy a worried look. "Are you alright?" Hayes asks as he looks Derek over. It was quite clear that the boy was severally malnourished, not that Hayes had the knowledge to realize that. Hayes was extremely undereducated, his father didn't see any reason why Hayes should go to school. As his father always said: "An educated boy is taught to be a coward." Hayes wasn't quite sure if he believed that, but he knew better than to question his father, unless he wanting a good beating. "Apologies for my forwardness, are you perhaps suffering from some sort of bug? Maybe there is a doctor around?" He glances around as if the answer will come from the grassland around them.

Derek chuckled his dry laugh again. "It's no ailment, trust me." Standing up, the lanky man poked his top half into the wagon he rode, then came back out with the Flare Falcon on his hand, thumb holding it's talons gently as it perched upon his first finger. The paper tube had been tied on again, and Derek grinned at Hayes. Holding his hand up, Derek let his thumb come away from the bird's talons, and it flew back into the horizon, back to where it had come from. Sitting back down, Derek chuckled again, then turned his gaze back to Hayes. "I see questions in your eyes. Go ahead and ask, I don't mind."

"I was wondering if I could hear more of what you wrote" now that the steeds were finally under control Hayes could tie the reigns down and relax. His muscles were aching now, he couldn't stand the thought of having to steer them in the correct direction again. He glances over at Derek and gives him an embarrassed look. "I didn't get much opportunity to read, but I find that I have an interest in it." He informs. "Also- tell me more about your settlement. Was there a reason why you left?"

Derek gave a brightened and renewed smile. He held up a finger, telling Hayes he would be back in just a second, then stepped into the back of his wagon. Pulling a small chest towards the front of the wagon, he sat down again and pulled a few slips of paper from it, which looked exactly like the first one he'd had. "First, about my home place, yeah?" Settling the papers in his lap, he glanced across the top one, then looked back to Hayes. "It was a nice little homestead, big enough to breed and sell some of the best horses for..." He trailed off. "A long way, to put it simply. I helped to calm some of the horses and domesticate them when they were young. These two-" He pointed to the two pulling his wagon. "Are the strongest two we had. But, they aren't big on looks." He shrugged. "Anyways, I felt like I would be able to pursue more poetic opportunities at the end of the Trail. Not a lot of the folks at my little town were big on reading either. I managed to teach myself, got a big head start on my early days of school. Eventually, I managed to accelerate beyond all of my classmates. Ended up helping the teacher teach the class, 'till I got out of there. It was a bit boring, felt like I was teaching stones and boulders. Anyways, I heard that this trail was headed to other places, couldn't keep myself away." Derek gave a weary smile, then set his hands on the papers in front of him.

He was a bit shocked that she asked first, and the exact question he was about to ask. He decided to just go with it since he was on her wagon after all. “Well...” he shrugged and let out a small exhale. “If I’m being honest I don’t really know why, just wanted to keep moving I guess.” He laughed lightly and turned his head to look at her directly. “Before I ask your name, like a normal person, might as well return the question, right?” He smiled a bit and let a small silence come between his words. “What’s your reason for comin?” He has a good guess based on what he saw before they headed out, but decided to let her answer. She obviously wasn’t dressed like her assumed “family”, and she seemed pretty excited to leave. Those alone gave him a vague answer.

Meg sang"I guess I have to face that in this awful place I shouldn't show a trace of doubt"she played her guitar a bit and said and played"but pulled against the grain I feel a little pain that I would rather be without".and she kept playing the song.she was very good at it too.

Mittens purrs in her box of blankets.
