A Darkness United
Forum-Index → Fanmades → Fanfictions → A Darkness United...I...had no idea what I'd gotten myself into... it was a lonely night...I had gone for a walk. Little did I know on that night, my whole life would change. Was it for the better? That's...debatable.
My name is Maria, and I live in a city. The name of it doesn't matter. It was a big city, lit up all through even at night. I'm 12 years old, a girl, and one without parents. No one knows what happened to me, all they said was that I was found somewhere and brought to the orphanage I call home. I hate the place, even growing up there. I hated the girls there, and the head..ugh! She sucked! Anyways, this isn't the point of my story. This here was a simple night walk, one that was regular for me. I was always warned never to talk to strangers, don't go into suspicious alleyways without reason! I'd listened, but the one day I didn't...
The moon was full, the sounds of cars driving down the street as well as the sounds of my feet touching down on the sidewalk were the only things I heard in the background of my thoughts as I daydreamed. Often, I traveled rather far away from my orphanage, so this wasn't scary for me, being a good mile away from the place. I was, however, startled from my thoughts by a voice from a dark alleyway.
"Hey! Hey kid, over here!"
I turned my head to see a rather shady looking guy in a hoodie. He was calling to me from a dark alleyway with graffiti on the walls of the nearby building. I tried to walk on and ignore him, but he called out again.
"Hold up! Wait! You've heard of Pokemon, right? I can show you somethin'."
I stopped, a pretty stupid decision on my part, but I loved Pokemon, and so I turned around. I supposed there wasn't much risk. I couldn't fight, but I was small, even for my age, and a fast runner. If the guy tried anything, I could just run, right? I followed him cautiously into his alleyway. He brought me to a strange machine.
"This'll take ya to the Pokemon universe. Cool, eh?"
I gave the guy a look. I may be young, but I'm not that gullible! I shook my head.
"Ah, c'mon, kid! Try it out, at least?" He grabbed my hand, and before I could protest, put it on a spot indented into the device. "I'll turn it on, kay?"
I rolled my eyes. Welp, this better be quick. He flipped a switch on the thing, and it started to heat up and vibrate. My...vision was going black! What was happening?! My consciousness....faded....
Title: Chapter 2
I opened my eyes. The ground, which had just been stone sidewalk on the city streets, was now poking into my ears. Grass. In my direct vision was a river of running water. I lifted my head, I was lying down, and looked around. A roof over my head made of leaves blocked most of the sun, leaving a dappled pattern of light and shadow on the ground. The leaves were made by trees, the trunks of which were all around me. I thought back to what the shady guy said. This'll take you to the Pokemon universe.. Perhaps he was telling the truth? I didn't see any pokemon around...
I decided to try to stand up, only to find that, as I did, my limbs felt shaky and I stumbled, landing on all fours. Though in my brief standing position, I hadn't failed to notice...I'd gotten impossibly shorter. However, I felt good on four legs, as if I was made to be that way...had my body changed? I looked down at my 'feet'. They were paws! I had paws! I ran over to the river on all fours and stared at my reflection. Shady guy wasn't lying...I was in the pokemon world. As a pokemon!
I was an Eevee!
I panicked for a second, my fur bristling, that pure unusualness of it doing so not helping at all. Then, I took a few deep breaths. Calm down, Maria, you're still alive, it's not the end of the world. I went over my options. I was an Eevee, which meant I could evolve into 8 different Eeveelutions, which wasn't half bad. What should I evolve into...? I thought excitedly. Wait! Something hit my neck!
What was that?
No! No! Not again...! My world faded to black. I felt my Eevee head hit the ground once more.
Tranquilizer dart...I'd been captured..
Title: Chapter 3
My limbs felt heavy. My whole body felt heavy... for a moment I forgot about the whole Eevee thing and just wondered where I was. Definitely not the woods. Whatever I was laying on was cold and heat sucking, like some kind of metal. Not the soft, wet grass of the forest. It took a while for everything to catch up, and at that my closed eyes flew open. They were only met with blurry vision, which was frustrating. I shook my head, causing my ears to flop against my head unpleasantly. A sharp headache started throbbing through my head at this, and my paws curled inward as I winced, waiting for it to fade before taking another good look around, thankfully my vision had gotten a little clearer. What I saw was that I was inside of a cage, with the only light coming in from the room on the other side of the bars. The cage was cold, very cold. I felt helpless, I had no power to do anything. All the ability to open such a prison had been lost the moment I turned from human to pokemon.... all I could do... was wait...
I heard footsteps enter the room. They approached my cage.
No...
I backed up, trying to avoid them even before they opened the containment unit, reaching inside for me. I raised a paw threateningly, the only thing I could do, which was pathetic, I realize now. A cute wittle Eevoi waving a soft paw at you? Terrifying. The man reaching in didn't even look phased as he grabbed me. There was no room to run. As I was pulled into the full light, I blinked as my eyes adjusted. The man carrying me was wearing a white lab coat. Was I in a lab? Labs in Pokemon...that was where Pokemon were experimented on! It looked like I was next, and there was nothing I could do. It would be no use to struggle. My body still felt weak, and it didn't help that I was smaller now.
After a while of walking, I was brought to a room, surrounded by scientists was a table with blankets on it, next to it was an adjustable table with tools as if preparing for some kind of operation in a hospital. As I stared at it, one of the women spoke.
"Are we sure its safe to test...?" She sounded nervous. The man carrying me shrugged.
"Who cares? If this one dies, we'll just get another one."
The Woman looked a little sympathetic towards me. "Look how cute it is...it doesn't deserve to die..."
The man looked at her with a cold stare. "And it didn't deserve to be pulled from its home either, but do we care? NO!" He barked, placing me rather ungently onto the operation table. I landed with a thump. Oww... The woman took a deep breath.. "I..guess we have no choice, then. Sorry, little Eevee." She took out a little needle and grabbed my arm as the men held me down. I was injected, and felt my world go black yet again... this was happening way too often...
Title: Chapter 4
"Whoa! Don't get too excited. Just 'cause it's still alive doesn't guarantee us anything." That was the cold voice of the first scientist.
I opened my eyes, blinking drowsily. Thankfully, my head had stopped hurting, and it seemed like I had been out for awhile. A good few hours, at least, probably more. My ears twitched as the scientists reacted.
"Look! It's getting up." Another new voice, female this time. The frosty man kept a straight face as he nodded. "Testing can begin soon, but this might just be our easiest success."
The scientists began celebrating all around. I'd seen this before, I remember this. This was when Mewtwo became upset and escaped. I wasn't an all powerful psychic clone, though. As far as I was aware, I was just a regular Eevee. Though, to be fair, I wasn't aware of much at all, everything was happening too fast. It felt like I would just be a slave to the system like all the others....
But wait.
My luck seemed to turn around. By this point I was fully conscious, staring at the door, my only exit. The door opened. My heart quickened. I was hardly thinking, it was my instincts taking control of my body. I wasn't exactly ready for it, so my next act was entirely free of any grace, but I scrambled to my paws and leaped off the operation table, startling all the scientists, including the one that was just coming in. I slipped between his legs and bolted out the door. Freedom!
I heard the frosty man yell. "Don't just stand there, catch it!" I was aware they'd chase after me, but it was too late to turn back now. I couldn't give up...not if there was that slight chance.... I bolted through the halls, fueled by nothing but my own adrenaline, my pounding heart beating so loudly in my chest I could swear they might use it to track me down, so I didn't stop. Turns out, the labs were very secure, go figure! But luckily, I found the golden escape route, a window. To me, in the moment, the window was just a wall I could break. Totally original idea here! Not.
Now, I hadn't thought much about my moves yet. Heck! I'd been cut off in the middle of deciding my evolution path! But there was no thought here, no pondering, I just... used whatever one came to me. That move turned out to be swift. Star shaped energy struck the window, cracking and eventually shattering it. On surprisingly powerful legs I leaped on and out of the window, not even caring when the sharp glass cut into my paws, drawing out blood. I was free, and started running from the lab.
Hey, it didn't end with me passing out! What a nice change!
Title: Chapter 5
It had been a good few minutes since I had first jumped out. It seemed I had lost the scientists, but I wasn't ready to stop. I decided that I would run on until I found some drinking water. I was gonna need a hell of a drink once I finally stopped. As I ran, I had time to wonder; what exactly had those scientists done to me? I hoped whatever it was wasn't going to kill me... I recalled what the woman had said. Are we sure it's safe to test...? as if it weren't meant to kill me. Also, the frosty man had said If I died, which leaned towards non fatal, right? These were the words I used to convince myself.
But what was that experiment supposed to test?
Whatever, I was free, and that was all that mattered. I ran. And ran. And ran some more. My own fear was giving me stamina, the power to run as fast and as far as I could go, farther than ever. I hadn't quite comprehended just how far I was until the lab, that was on a hill, I didn't quite mention, had disappeared behind me. What lie ahead was a city. I was back in a city! Mind you, not the same city I was from, as I don't live in the Pokemon world, but I ran towards it. I don't know why, there are a ton of humans there. So far humans had proven themselves dangerous, but I had spotted something. A water fountain.
I needed to stop. My cut paws were stinging from the stress, and as I ran I left a trail of blood spots. Water fountains weren't made for Pokemon, but I could still use it, from the looks of it. I leaped onto the top without even skipping a beat. I lifted a paw and pressed the button on the faucet, panting heavily, my lungs burning. The fresh, cold water stained my face, and I stuck out my tongue and lapped at it, practically inhaling the water into my throat, which sent a relieving cooling sensation. The water that landed near my paws also cooled the cuts there. It was paradise!
I heard a voice behind me. "Hey! Check this out! An Eevee is using a water fountain!" A woman's voice. I heard footsteps at her call, then a man laughing.
"That is adorable! You gotta record this!" I heard someone pull out a phone.
"I am! I am!"
I turned around to see two humans recording me on their phones as I drank. Not gonna lie, it was a little embarrassing, seeing them just recording me, but there wasn't much I could do. By now my paws had stopped bleeding for the most part, which was nice. I was just getting ready to leave, as my stomach was starting to feel heavy with the water, but then...
"Oh! It's leaving. Hold up! Imma try an' catch it!" The woman pulled out a pokeball.
Oh nononono...
Title: Chapter 6
I heard a clank as the first capsule hit the water fountain I'd jumped from. They might send out a pokemon soon... I panicked and dug my paws into the ground with each stride, speeding up. I could feel myself going faster and faster, almost impossibly so.
"Go magmar!" I heard the lady shout, followed by the thump of a large pokemon hitting the ground. I had to keep going, I didn't know if I could tank whatever this thing threw at me.
"Magmar! Use... oh my gosh!" The lady cut off for some reason, and I used the opportunity to bolt over the city walls, back the way I came, taking a turn towards a river. I don't know what got a hold of me, but I ran to it, thinking if I jumped in, I'd escape...
I got to the river and stopped dead in my tracks.
I...looked different...way different. I wasn't an Eevee anymore, but a Jolteon... Now how the heck did that happen?
I hadn't been in contact with a thunder stone, had I? I was almost disappointed, my evolution plans ruined by an accident. Then I heard the lady's voice.
"I think that Eevee was magic! Did you see it evolve? We gotta find it! It might be the result of that experiment the boss's scientists were supposed to do! It might have escaped!" She seemed to be calling to the man she'd been with before.
These humans were in association with the lab scientists? Okay, river time.
I practically tripped myself into the water, I was in such a rush. Instantly the water tugged me, pulling me faster and faster as I became lighter. Wait, what? I was becoming lighter? I looked at my paws, yellow just a second ago, now shrinking and reverting back to brown. What!? Was I...devolving? But....what? That was impossible! I thought back to the experiment...I wondered if this process was part of the test they were talking about. Maybe I could evolve and devolve or something?
I was underwater at this point, and as I was pondering I realized I'd been under the water for a while. I was breathing just fine. I realized the water wasn't tugging me around as easily, I was moving in a straight line. I was swimming! I looked at my paddling paws, and gasped in the water. They were blue! I felt a fish tail beating at the water, pushing me forward, and my ears had become fins that were flapping in the current. I was a Vaporeon!
It all makes sense now... I know exactly what that experiment did to me!
Title: Chapter 7
I made my way out of the water to see that I had stumbled upon a forest. More woods, hopefully less tranquilizers this time. Seeing little other choice anyway, I made my way in. Judging by the fact that I had devolved from Jolteon, I could tell this watery form would be short lived, but I hoped to test this new power for some time before facing humans again. I made another mental note. Humans=Danger. This was a note I never thought I'd make, considering I'd been a human not to long ago, I realized, though it felt like a lifetime, I knew good humans existed, but now I could see why Pokemon didn't trust them, and tended to stay away. I would now do the same.
As I predicted, as I made my way into the forest, I felt my legs get shorter as I reverted back from Vaporeon to Eevee, which took away the superior view I had with my head higher above the plant life, but I was dry at this point, and could handle it. As I walked, I realized I was starving, and had a mental panic. I hadn't even had time to think about how I was gonna get food as a wild Pokemon! I started thinking quickly without breaking pace, and remembered berries existed. Hopefully there were berries in this forest, not that it was easy to see in the dark of night...
Luckily, the moonlight reflected off a smooth, blue surface in a tree. It looked like an Oran berry! Problem was, it was high up. Now how the heck was I gonna get up there? Normally, I'd just sleep on it. Not worth it. However, in this case, my hunger was eating at my stomach. I was willing to try anything. I decided to try and climb the tree, feeling fearless after my easy escape from the humans before. I could do this, I had magical powers now! I unsheathed my claws, digging them into the thin bark, and tried griping it, pulling myself up using my claws. This immediately proved painful, as my weight was now weighing on the skin holding in my claws, but I pressed on. The berries were surprisingly high up. I groaned inwardly, then, suddenly, my grip got stronger, and I knew I was evolving again. My muscles grew leaner, and I practically leaped up onto the branch and snagged the berry, settling onto the strong bark between two branches and making a meal for myself with all the berries in reach. I could tell I was a Leafeon, it only made sense. This power would definitely prove useful. It seemed to adapt to whatever the environment called for, which made sense, considering that was exactly what Eevee's evolutions and 'unstable' DNA were supposed to be for.
I went to sleep feeling confident I would survive in this new world.
Title: Chapter 8
That being all I could see, I decided to get a closer look, disturbed by the sound of the shriek and the noises the humans were making. I leaped out of the tree, hoping my Leafeon form would hold, and crept closer on slender, graceful paws. Crouching behind a tent, I could see a small, purple creature cowering from a large Pokemon, a Mightyena, to be specific. the purple creature appeared to be holding something in its mouth, but it was hard to tell with the dark Pokemon in the way. The Pokemon in question made its move, snapping at the smaller creature, and the smaller creature, which turned out to be a Rattata, tried to flee, only to be grabbed by the tail by the Mightyena, pulled off the ground.
"Mightyena, use fire fang!" Called a trainer's voice.
And so it did, attacking the Rattata with burning fangs, which happened to send the little Pokemon flying.
It was then the creature scrambled to its feet and tried again to escape with whatever its goods were, but the Mightyena was fast in chasing it.
It was then I made my move.
Without really thinking about it, I was suddenly rushing to stand in front of the Mightyena, which stopped in its tracks, letting out a little dog whimper as it tried to get past me and back to its prey, which was hopefully escaping. I didn't know why I rushed to the rescue, but I faced off against the fire-fanged creature, who was clearly trying to get past me still. There was my chance. Just like before, I didn't really need to think about my attack, it just came to me. The sprouts on my front paws started to glow with energy and grow into long spikes. Now the dark Pokemon was starting to realize I was attacking it, but by then I was already making my move. I reared on my hind legs and slashed both blades into an X shape. X Scissor. A green, X shaped attack flew at the mightyena, hitting it with a supereffective hit and sending the dark dog flying backward. I briefly glanced behind me to check on the Rattata, who I found was gawking. Grr..stupid rat! Run! I whipped around, grabbed the Rattata, and bolted out of there. However, I was slow in doing this, and the Mightyena had recovered and was speeding back toward us, charging a fire fang once more. I felt flaming teeth snap just too close to my tail, then heard whining again. It fell back, by the sounds of it, and I found the nearest tree and, by instinct, climbed it. When I looked back down from it, without setting down the Rat Pokemon just yet, I saw that the camp was filled with smoke all of a sudden.
I tilted my head. Was someone else there? Someone besides the Rattata? Didn't matter. I leaped from tree to tree with the rodent pokemon in my grasp, trying to flee as far as possible via the treetops. After a while, a landed at a decently distanced tree from the camp and stopped on a sturdy branch, setting the Rattata down and gasping from breath. The purple pokemon dropped its goods and blinked at me, looking a bit fearful all of a sudden. "U-Umm, you..aren't going to eat me, are you miss?"
I responded, honestly not expecting to be talked to. "Well, seems like a lot of trouble to go through to get a meal, don't ya think?" I laughed a little nervously, having never talked to an animal before, it was weird. "But trust me, I'd rather have berries. I'm a Leafeon."
The Rat Pokemon breathed. "Ah...right. Thanks for saving me there. My name is Leo." It placed a little rat paw on the goods it had stolen.
I stiffened a bit. I hadn't thought the stranger would ask for my name. I didn't want to say Maria...that sounded too human. Perhaps, being a bit panicked, I was overthinking it. What was a good name I could use....? "Oh, uhh...my name's uhh...Eva." I sighed, Eva it was. I looked at the goods the pokemon had. "What are those?" I asked Leo.
"Oh." Leo glanced at the things under his paw. "They're..machine parts. We're trying to gather them. The Humans are trying to use them to capture a friend of mine."
It certainly looked that way. Some kind of tracker locked onto a Pokemon...So this Pokemon had a friend..perhaps the one that set up the smoke? I decided to ask. "So...was your friend the one that saved us with the smokescreen back there?"
Leo gave a half shrug. "Sorta kinda? That was Rox, she's my friend, but she came to support me. The friend they're tracking isn't her." He glanced down. "Speaking of Rox..."
Suddenly, a voice sounded from below the tree. "Leo?" A cautious, female voice sounded. "Leo?"
The Rattata, crept to the edge of the branch. "Rox! I'm up here! In the tree!" I peaked down as well. It was a vulpix, glaring at Leo.
"Keep it down! They might hear us! How the heck did you get up there?"
Leo shook his head. "Nonsense, they're long gone, and I got the thing!" Leo looked at me. "Can you help me down?" I nodded, and picked up the Rat, and slid down the tree, leaping off in a catlike way and setting Leo down by Rox the Vulpix, who gasped at my appearance. "Leo! Who's this?" She started to growl at me, fire starting to leak out her mouth in a warning. Leo rushed to stop her. "Rox! Wait! This Leafeon is a friend! She saved me. Her name is Eva." He turned to me. "This is Rox, my smoky friend." He winked.
Rox growled again. "If you're sure she's a friend..." The fire started to die down, but she shot a glare at Leo. "Stop giving me stupid nicknames!"
Leo giggled, "Okay, Okay. Anyways, lets blow this joint. Eva, wanna come with us?"
I froze at first, startled by the invitation, but I was stopped from speaking by Rox, who'd suddenly flared up again. "We can't just bring a stranger with us! We don't even know her! She could be a spy for the humans!" My ears went flat. As if! Humans were a literal nightmare! Leo jumped to my defense. "Humans aren't stupid, they wouldn't make a spy that attacks their own. Eva attacked that Mightyena to save me. Besides, they wouldn't spy on some random Pokemon..."
Rox rolled her eyes and stood her ground. "I saw. And they would if they knew that we were working with Reye." She gave me a suspicious look, and I just couldn't stay silent. "I am not working for the humans, I swear!" I snapped. "And humans, if anything, are hunting me down!" I blurted without really thinking. Maybe I shouldn't reveal my secret just yet...but at the same time, if I was going to be with them, they'd find out soon enough, right?
Rox glared at me. "Go back into your tree, you aren't coming with us!" Leo growled back at her. "Give her a chance! She saved me, and Reye can keep an eye on her, make sure she doesn't try anything. She's not frail, you know." He snapped, which seemed to startle the Vulpix a bit. She licked a paw to smooth her fur, but not without giving me a look. "Fine...I will help keep an eye on her. Grab the parts and let's go." She started to run out of the forest, Leo following her, and I ran after.
I hadn't gotten to ask who Reye was...
Title: Chapter 9
We ate our food in silence, and the moment I had eaten my last berry, we were on the run again. Maybe that was a bad idea...I felt my stomach beginning to hurt from running right after a meal, but I wasn't about to let this jerk of a Vulpix leave me behind. Besides, I was starting to like Leo, and the possibility of meeting friends on this unfortunate journey. Give us a little while, and the trees were spreading out, before we finally left the forest entirely. We started to slow down. "I can smell Gracideas." Rox panted, "We're getting close." Was that what that smell was...? I followed them, my longer legs giving me the need to slow down for the smaller Pokemon. Soon, a heard the sound of hooves making impact against the ground, and a Summer form Deerling with a Gracidea flower adorning his ear greeted us. "Hey Rox! Hey Leo..." He trailed off after spotting me. "Random Leafeon?" Rox glanced back at me. "Yeah, Leo insisted on bringing her along..." As the Deerling tilted his head, Leo piped up. "I got the tracker thingy!" He set the parts in front of the deer Pokemon.
Another Pokemon approached, this time a Ponyta, its fiery mane flickering and flowing in the wind as it approached, seeing the parts. "Fantastic, Leo!" It then saw what the Deerling saw. "Uhh..." I felt my ears go down, seeing their reactions. "Hey..." Leo placed his tiny paw on my leg. "This is Eva, she saved my life from the Dark Pokemon!" He turned to me. "Those are some of my other friends. Gracidea the Deerling and Pinto the Ponyta." He pointed to each one as he said their names. Neither of them was Reye...but Gracidea...I knew that flower was related to the Mythic Pokemon Shaymin. Was Reye...a Shaymin? It would explain why she was being tracked, and why these Pokemon were so keen on protecting her... The Pokemon seemed to relax at Leo's words. The Ponyta, Pinto took a step towards me. "Hey Eva! Nice to meet you!" Feeling more comfortable, I waved back at the horse Pokemon. Wait...oh no...I felt myself shrinking...the Leafeon form was fading, and everyone started to stare. I looked at my paws again. Pure light brown. Back to Eevee form.
Everyone's jaw dropped.
"Did you just...devolve?" Leo asked, bewildered.
"Did who devolve?" A new voice broke in, and I looked up to see what was indeed a Shaymin, striding over to us, in Sky forme, and with a Gracidea adorning her right wing(Ear thing?). Rox looked from me to the Shaymin, who had just started to notice the stranger in her presence. "Who's the Eevee?" The female voice demanded. I stuttered. "My name's E-Eva..." I responded quietly. Leo stepped in front of me. "She...helped me in the forest. I wanted you to let her join us, Reye."
So this was Reye.
Title: Chapter 10
"So, kid. What exactly gives you the reason for me to believe you're with us? That you'll stay with us. I need to give an appropriate judgement here, I don't have room for potential traitors, so forgive me." As she said this, Reye stomped on the tracker, destroying it.
Now was my chance. My one and only chance...I needed this!
Title: Chapter 11
Reye gestured with a paw for me to go on. "Elaborate..."
"I was in the woods, staring into a river. Mind completely blank.." I explained slowly, keeping as close to the truth as possible "I was trying to think back when a tranquilizer hit my neck, and I passed out. When I woke up, I was in a cage."
Now that seemed to get their attention, all of them leaned closer as I continued.
"The scientists grabbed me...they took me to a room..." I went on to explain what they'd said, how they didn't care if I'd died, and the experiment, then waking up and escaping.
"It was after I escaped that I realized I had this power." I finished finally.
Reye looked thoughtful. "I suppose that would make sense... say, do you suppose you could re-evolve for me? I want to see this power."
I stood still, nervous. "I..." I tried to evolve then, I really did, into Umbreon or something...but it just didn't work. I wasn't strong enough... "I'm sorry, but I can't will it to work, It happens naturally." I apologized to her, hoping she wouldn't start thinking I was lying, fully aware she hadn't quite seen me devolve.
Reye smiled reassuringly. "Maybe we can work on it...I'd like to learn more of this power. But..." She turned to her comrads "You can confirm she does indeed have this power, yes?" All of the others nodded at this question. Reye nodded once more. "Very well. What do you say we attempt a test?" She asked, turning back to me.
I, confused, but seeing no reason to say no, nod. Reye leads me to an open, flowering field touched by sunlight. She then turned to face me, gesturing to the others with a twitch of her wing to stand back.
"Alright, Eva. I challenge you to a battle!"
I could only stare blankly back. Battle? I hadn't really had a proper battle before, and against a legendary Pokemon? I could tell by the look in Reye's eyes that she wasn't planning to go easy on me. There was no way I could do this! I began to panic I glanced at the other Pokemon, standing at the side. Pinto, looking curious, Gracidea, seeming intrigued, Leo, looking confident, as if begging me to go already, and Rox, with a face like she was just waiting for me to mess up. I locked eyes with her. If Leo could make this spicy fox into a friend, surely she wasn't that bad to everyone?
I made a goal for myself. I'd show her!
I turned back to face the Shaymin, who was beginning to look impatient, and nodded my head. "Challenge accepted." I made an effort to speak up, and thankfully my voice didn't shake. My moves... hopefully they'd come to me. With my words, Reye rose into the air, charging up a glowing green light into a sphere. Energy ball. She fired it at me. I knew I had swift, so I sent the star attack straight at it, meeting the green orb midair. I expected it to shatter both attacks, like I'd seen in so many animes, but all it seemed to do was slow the energy ball's decent towards me, and I had to make a desperate rush to dodge. Reye looked determined, and it took me a second to realize she wanted me to evolve. She rushed towards me, her wings starting to glow this time, air slash? Instinct took over, and I turned around, tail glowing, and smacked the Shaymin's wings with an iron tail. The Mythic's attack was still strong, however, and sent me flying backward.
I was knocked off my paws, so I quickly loafed them under me and lifted my little body to stand. I was panting...we were like, two minutes--no, not even a minute into the battle, and I was already getting tired. Come on...evolve.. I begged myself. That was the only way I stood a chance! In this battle, and in staying with the group both. There was no way I'd live with myself if I was cast out with Rox's disapproving face judging me as I was forced to run to who knows where.
I faced Reye, my eyes stretching wide. Baby doll eyes. It lowered the Shaymin's attack. Not much, but I'd take what I could get. The Shaymin shook her head, eyes beginning to glow, and suddenly I felt my paws leave the ground. Something invisible hit me in the chest, and I was flung back even farther, being sent sliding through the dirt, damaging the flowers. I lay there, stunned for a second. Reye hadn't even touched me! What move was that? It was now that my body seemed to finally realize I was in real danger here. I started to tap into my power. Flareon, here I come! Naturally, I assumed I would be given the evolution that would give me the type advantage. I was wrong, apparently, and was surprised to see instead of fluffy fur, a black coat with glowing yellow rings, and increased eyesight. Neat, but how exactly did that help?
I stood up shaking earth off my body. Welp, I'd have to work with this. My rings began to glow, and I charged at Reye. My teeth seemed to grow sharper, and I bit down on the Shaymin's wing, causing her to let out a screech and be sent flying away due to the energy explosion.
After picking herself up again, she spoke "Well, this is certainly very interesting..." As I started to charge again, she barked at me to halt. "That's enough for now. I've seen all I need to see. We could really use your talent to our advantage, Miss Eva, if you're willing."
I panted a bit, letting myself relax now that that nightmare was over. "Yes please. Take me with you." I told the Shaymin, glancing back at Rox, who seemed to just scoff and turn her head away. I sighed inwardly. Getting these guys to trust me might not be easy...but at least Leo and Reye seemed to like the idea of having me along. Reye was a legendary Pokemon, so I knew she hadn't made this decision lightly...maybe my power really was great.
Maybe I really might fit into this new world after all.
Title: Chapter 13
At Reye's command, we were on the move. It was strange, my lungs were still burning from that battle, but I happily went along, Leo running up to match my strides, rather longer now that I was still in Umbreon form.
"Wow! Eva! That was awesome!" The little Pokemon exclaimed. "I don't know if I could ever stand up to Reye!" The Ratatta then looked down at his tiny paws. "...I-I'm too weak in this state..."
He looked miserable, and I felt bad for him. I began thinking back to my knowledge of his species from my own world. There were many memes on the internet about youngsters and their Rattata, and how they were so easy to breeze right through on playthroughs, but she'd also heard stories of how the Pokémon could be a surprisingly decent Pokémon to use, with powerful fang moves and other attacks, they weren't all that bad... I stared at the Ratatta, wondering. Maybe he needed something to boost his confidence? I wasn't really sure how to respond to something like that, but I didn't want to see him talk down about himself like that. I opened my mouth, about to try and reassure him, but was interrupted by the appearance of Gracidea and Pinto, flanking me on either side.
"Leo's right! You were great!" Pinto clearly hadn't heard Leo's other words, too busy congratulating me. "That's a pretty cool power!" The Ponyta was prancing along, enthusiastic as can be. A rather cold voice sounded behind him, though, ruining the mood.
"Yes, a rather cool power indeed. One may even say too cool." I knew from the first sound of the words that the voice was from Rox. I sighed inwardly. Of course she would try to undermine my success in that battle. Was it jealousy...or was this just how she was? I wondered. From my impression of her, it seemed pretty hard to tell. I decided to ask her, trying not to sound impolite, though admittedly I was irritated. "What do you mean too cool? What's wrong with my power?"
"Oh, there's nothing wrong with it. And that's just it." She glared at me, her voice sickly sweet. She took a step closer, as if that would make the hooved Pokémon less likely to hear. "Don't think that just because you supposedly saved my friend or that you threw a few attacks at Reye that I suddenly trust you. I simply don't believe that 'having a superpower' means, 'I'm obviously innocent'." She spat in a fiery tone, raising her head to glare into my eyes. I felt my lip curl slightly, but took a deep breath and responded coolly. "Well, you said you'd keep an eye on me, so how about you do that?" I picked up the pace slightly, glancing behind me to look at her as I walked away. "Maybe try not being so needlessly rude all the time." I muttered, but couldn't resist purposely making it just audible enough for them all to hear.
I didn't hear the Vulpix's response. At this point we were all a decent distance from the previous flower field, making our way through a small village. Too small a village, I realized, as the buildings looked too small for humans, just big enough to comfortably house a Pokémon Umbreon's size and smaller.
That wasn't the obvious thing that struck me first about this place though, or the reason Reye had now stopped all of a sudden. Sounds of violent activity could be heard ahead, and the shrieks of battling Pokémon. The Shaymin's nose was twitching, and her ears were pricked upward. She turned back to the rest of us, now tensed, and with bristling fur.
"Humans!"
Title: Chapter 14
The Pokémon we came to were beaten down, and scratched up, as if they'd been fighting hard. To my dismay, it seemed as if the humans may be winning. I felt so bad for the Pokémon...and wondered why the humans were attacking. As I got closer still, I picked up the humans talking.
"I think we've weakened them a good bit!" Called a man's voice over the sounds of the fighting, "We can start trying to capture the target now!" The man was tall, skinny, and had brown hair, from the looks of it. His Pokémon was a Charizard.
"We had a target?" Asked a female voice somewhere behind him. I couldn't see her fully, but I saw her Pokémon was an Alolan Ninetales. They seemed to all be wearing the same jacket with the gang logo from the humans in the forest camp. 'DU' in edgy letters....what did that mean...? I was disrupted from my thoughts by his response.
"The rainbow weapon was a success." He replied.
"Rainbow weapon, right. That was the shapeshifting Eevee thing, yes?" The female responded.
"Right, orders are to capture anything Eevee or its evolutions."
A new voice chimed in, another female voice. "I saw a Glaceon and a Jolteon in that crowd! Let's get 'em!"
I panicked again. Was I the 'Rainbow weapon'? They were trying to track me down! I thought back to the forest camp, I had been so bold in fighting that Mightyena! If it had been just a little too late I would have screwed myself over! I remembered the humans in the city, too. If I hadn't escaped...where would I be now? I looked back at the crowd of Pokémon. I thought about the now faceless Glaceon and Jolteon. I didn't know them, but I knew they were innocent, and I didn't know what these horrible people might do to them. I bristled as I did, I saw Gracidea rush past me.
"No one is getting captured!" The deer Pokémon cried. "Aromatherapy!" A soothing green aura spread to all the battling Pokémon, healing their wounds over. He was right, I thought. No one here was going down without a fight, because our little spec of light had arrived!
Title: Chapter 15
What was that? I heard a voice just then...whispering. It wasn't one of those times I would I would think to myself, encouraging myself to move on...it felt as if some higher power was speaking to me just then...lending me strength. Well, whatever it was, I wasn't about to object. Charging the fire type, I used bite on it, the same move I'd used on Reye. The Charizard looked startled as my razor-sharp teeth dug in. If I remembered right, Umbreon's attack stat was higher than its special attack. I backed away, charging another...
"That's an Umbreon! Get your Pokeballs ready!" The man ordered his companions.
Shoot! I'd already forgotten that they were after eeveelutions! Too late, the Ninetales trainer threw her first pokeball at me. I recognized that purple shine. No!
Master ball.
I closed my eyes, knowing I couldn't escape this. Would Rox be happy now? With me gone? A few agonizing seconds past...but the ball never hit. I looked up, and a shard of ice had broken the capsule's path, splitting it in half. I looked around, and saw a glaceon nearby, glaring at the humans. "Back off!" The ice type growled, hurling an ice beam at the Ninetales. Not very effective, but it hit the vulpine beast square in between the eyes, causing it to howl.
"Grr! We'll get ya both then!" She readied another master ball. Just where were they getting these things? I rushed to help her, but the ball had already been thrown. She was farther than I had expected. The purple prison hit her, and there was no way to stop it. I stopped in my tracks, staring it horror as the ball shook once...twice...three times...bing! The glaceon was caught!
Oh no...oh no oh no... I stared in dismay. This poor Glaceon...I had wanted to save her! I sobbed, by eyes leaving her ball for a second. Suddenly the trainer shouted.
"Hey!"
I looked up, and saw a flash of grey scales dash past, the ball in its mouth. It leaped onto a nearby statue on the side of the street, setting it down. The flash of grey revealed itself to be a jangmo-o. It pressed the button on the center of the ball, freeing the Glaceon.
"Just what," A female voice came from the tiny dragon. "do you think you're doing?"
Title: Chapter 16
The Humans all growled. "Damnit!" The man shouted. "Another stupid pest!"
"Izza fast one!" The Ninetales trainer noted with a glare. "Swiped the ball right from me! Ya think yer a hero, lil lizard?" She taunted it.
I looked at the Jangmo-o. As far as I was concerned, she was a hero. She had saved that Glaceon when it all seemed to late...there were so many brave pokemon here...they didn't deserve to be captured by these horrible people. I raced over to them, just in time to hear the Glaceon mutter a quick 'thank you' to the little dragon. The Jangmo-o nodded in acknowledgement, smirking at the humans. "What do you say we teach these thugs a lesson?" she readied herself in an offensive position. From the looks of this one, she was a brave warrior. I wondered what moves she had, and was excited to see her fight. I quite liked dragon types, they might have been my favorite Pokémon type, in fact. I readied myself to attack as well. "Let's go for the Charizard." I suggested quietly. "That seems to be our best bet." Only the Glaceon was weak to its fire type moves, meanwhile two of our small battle trio may be crippled by a fairy attack. The Jangmo-o was nodding, her head scale glowing as she leaped and hit the reptile square in the eyes, causing a cracking sound and a roar. I was close behind. I used bite again, as it was the only move I was used to using in this form, and in a battle like this, I didn't want to take any chances, even with my carefree previous move choices. I bit the creature's wing while it had yet to recover from the Jangmo-o's assault. It roared again, it's head swinging side to side, glaring at us.
The Glaceon had hung back. She called to me. "Get out of the way, guys!"
I didn't hesitate, leaping out of the way. No doubt this Glaceon was a higher level than I was, and I didn't want to take any risks with her hitting me. She opened her mouth, her voice letting out a piercing screech. What move was that? Round? Could glaceon learn round? The attack hit both the Ninetales and Charizard, weakening them both. The Jangmo-o wasn't effected. Her ability must have been soundproof, I noted.
I smirked in triumph. Looks like we were making good progress. The three of us regrouped. "Hyper voice." Said the Jangmo-o. "Don't see that one very often." The Glaceon nodded quietly. It seemed the other Pokémon weren't relenting either. Our little group seemed to have risen their spirits. It occurred to me I had never seen the others fight...I knew Rox had Smokescreen, and had seen a few of Reye's moves, but maybe it was finally time to see how much hope our 'spec of light' really had.
As if on queue, Rox entered the scene, something glowing deep from within her throat. "Fire blast!" I heard her bark as she sent a blast of flame at the Ninetales, which exploded into a star-shaped figure on impact. The Ice-fairy type squealed before falling, out for the count.
Ninetales was unable to battle.
Meanwhile, Pinto had hit hoof on top of a fainted Luxray, who I assumed was the third trainer's Pokémon, Gracidea and Reye not far away. The Shaymin, still in her sky form, glided gracefully through the sky, passed some bird Pokémon, before said bird Pokémon divebombed the Charizard, sending it back. Reye followed close behind. "Air slash!" She called out before impacting the fire type, knocking it out as well.
The humans gawked upon realizing there was a Mythical in the midst of the wild Pokémon. They gasped upon also realizing that their Pokémon were down. Ninetale's trainer readied a master ball, but the man grabbed her arm, forcing it down. "We gotta get out of here!" He ordered. The three humans recalled their Pokémon and rushed out.
I glanced back at the Glaceon and Jangmo-o, sighing in relief. "So glad that's over." I gasped, the others nodded. It was now that I realized that the Jangmo-o had used headbutt. It learned that move at Level 16, and it wasn't a very strong one...maybe this bold creature wasn't that much higher level than me...
Now that the Humans were gone, the Pokemon of the village were tending to each other, recovering from that brutal attack. Reye was speaking with a Jolteon...I assumed it was the Jolteon the humans had been referring to.
"Those stupid two-leggers!" The Electric type cursed. "First they come for Darkrai, and now me and Aqua!"
"Right. The Shaymin replied calmly. "Darkrai was this village's guardian..." She took a quick look at the surrounding of the village, scorched up from the battle. The Jolteon nodded. "Kurai...a great warrior...she protected us from attacks like this...now she's in those creatures' stupid clutches..." He growled with contempt. I decided to approach, the Glaceon following upon seeing the Jolteon, running over. The Jangmo-o followed close behind. "Village guardian?" I asked Reye as soon as she could hear. "What does that mean?"
"What? Have you been living under a rock your whole life or something?" That was Rox's voice, coming from behind. I turned around, Seeing Gracidea, Pinto, Rox, and Leo approaching as well.
"Eva said she had amnesia." Leo reasoned.
"How bad is her amnesia?" Pinto asked, tilting his head.
Amnesia! Thank goodness I had that excuse...
"Some villages don't have guardians, you know." The Glaceon cut in. She turned to me. "A village guardian is a Legendary or Mythical Pokémon designated to protect a village. A place like this. They're admired and respected for their strength and compassion for others." A Shadow covered her face then. "I suppose that's why the humans want them..."
"Aqua!" The Jolteon shouted suddenly, running over to the Glaceon, nuzzling her. "I saw you get captured! I thought they'd taken you!"
The Glaceon was startled from her bitter thoughts. "Don't worry, Static...this little Jangmo-o here was there to save me." The Jolteon looked down at the little dragon, his eyes sparkling. "Thank you!" He dipped his head to her. "Thank you so much for saving her! I don't know what I would do if they'd taken her..."
"We all did great." The Glaceon, who I now knew as Aqua, looked at each of us. "As thanks for helping us, how about we get some lunch and rest up at our place, on us!" She glanced at the Jolteon, Static, who nodded vigorously. Reye glanced at her group. "I don't see why not. Thank you." As we started to follow, Aqua seemed to see that the Jangmo-o was turning away. "Hey, that means you too!" The dragon seemed startled. "O-oh! Okay!" She followed us.
