Hello, and welcome to the Uniting of Musicians, once again! It's been a sort of joint decision to reboot this thread as the first one became inactive (my fault really, sincerest apologies). ^^

Compose music? Teach music? Just play instruments for fun? Or maybe you're learning an instrument and want to meet people who play it, too?
Well, I think you'll enjoy this place! Please read the rules and fill out the form to join.

Nickname(s): Sadi.. May it be pronounced as Sah-dee or Sei-dee, it doesn't matter :3
Reason for joining: I simply love listening to music ^_^ I'd like to share my favorites as well and know what everyone else listens to. Since I make compositions from time to time, I also would like to get ideas from everyone, especially if their forte is ethnic music.
Instruments you play: Mainly classic, electric, and bass Guitars. I play percussion instruments sometimes if a band needs a percussionist, and I also use the harmonica, Angklung, Kubing, and the Kulintang again, if needed.
Anything else?:
Let's list it down, shall we? :3
• My family on both sides came from a long line of Jazz musicians and singers.
----- My cousins from my mother's side are singers who can sing beautifully without much effort.
----- My cousins from my father's side are all jazz musicians who can read and write notes.
----- The above mentioned facts are to support the statement that I am depressingly the black sheep of the family being the only one who cannot read, write, and distinguish notes. I have to put up a lot of effort just to be able to sing decently and I only know basic chords. I try, even though it's hard to keep up.
• I can only play instruments by ear.
• I love to make up and blend harmonies in singing even if I can't sightread to save my life TwT
• My parents were against me getting a music-related course back in college two years ago (Oh, the agony) but I'm saving up for that now.
• I love making original compositions ^_^ It has also been my ultimate dream to create songs that are a mix of Symphonic Death Metal and Filipino Ethnic. Ugh.. I get goosebumps just by imagining it...
• I absolutely love sound and music editing! -^____^- Sadly, I don't have the equipment to record clean tracks -___-
• Setting the instruments aside, I am a part time amateur sound technician who's in charge of balancing levels and effects in gigs and mini-concerts :3

Hey there, Sadi and Kaybird! Welcome to the club! :3

First off, I agree! French horns are pretty cool. ^^

I think it would be a great idea to share music! And to share compositions, certainly! Right now I'm actually working on a top secret piece for Team Pumpkaboo. Shh, don't tell anyone! I don't mind if they find out about it but for now I'm not telling them. xD

I guess my forte would be classical, but probably video game/movie music also (if that counts :d).

Well, right now we are working on 4 (Maybe 5 pieces) for a Spring concert. There's Ghosts of the Teman Negara (Its weird to spell.), and The Great Locomotive Chase... That's all I can remember at the time :T

As for my forte, probably classical... Or things that are of medium to fast tempos. .3.

Awesome! Classical pieces can get really complicated and challenging. It's nice to know that there are still those who study classic ^___^ Good luck on your concert Kaybird!

Sneaky Fim >w< Will you share it with us sometime? :3 And yes! Game and movie soundtracks also count! ^__^

As for sharing.. I'd like to introduce you guys to Filipino Ethnic music. As a Filipino, I am proud of this one :'3 A little bit of a warning though.. In the end, it gets a bit uhh.. eccentric.. XD But if you're used to death metal or even at least screamo, then you have nothing to worry about ^__^;

"Rugerra" - Pinikpikan
"Isip Bitaw" - Pinikpikan

Tribal ethnic music has always been one of my favorites since highschool. May it be from any country, I am open to listen to them all. So if you have any with you, feel free to share. I'd be glad to listen to it :"> It's just amazing how much music has evolved throughout the years ^_^

As for the forte.. Honestly, I can't really name a genre that I'm good at, but I have been told countless times to have the tendency to compose music on a minor key. I don't even know what that means. Is that a bad thing? X'D I also have this thing of making and using "broken chords" with the guitar. Call it harmonic dischord, but it sounds off and yet in place at the same time.. I'll try to post an example of it when I have free time to better explain it ^_^ That's it for my forte, I guess..

@Kay~ Have fun learning The Great Locomotive Chase. ^^ I've heard a marching band play that one before, it's really fun-sounding!

My little musical creation is almost finished, I'm writing it without the aid of sheet music for now. Just by ear, haha. :3 I can read sheet music, but not fluently anyways. At this point it would just get in my way until I'm done fiddling around with it. Then maybe I'll sketch it out on manuscript paper somewhere. :p It doesn't have a name yet but sounds kind of jumpy and ghostly. It switches keys a few times, too. As soon as it's completed, I'll try to record it and put it here. >w<

I've listened to ethnic before, but not Filipino specifically. I like it! I'm not used to death metal, but it was still pretty great. (And I love your SoundCloud music as well!) ^o^

Minor keys are cool! I guess songs in minor keys just sound...more serious? I'm not sure how to describe it and I took two years in music theory, shaaaamme!. If you look on YouTube I think you'll be able to find a video or something that explains it better. ^^;

@Fim : What do you mean by sketching it out on manuscript paper? =o We'll be waiting for it >w<

Awesome! Glad you like it ^_^
Aww dang now that you mentioned it, I feel embarrassed now with some of my Soundcloud posts.. But thanks anyway hahaha XD

You have a point there X3 And it seems like minor keys sound a bit cold as compared to major ones that give a bright and happy feel.. At least that's how I've observed it so far. I still have a lot to learn :3

So to anyone who composes songs.. What are your compositions mostly about? How do you write your lyrics (if any)? :D

You know that lined paper that sheet music comes on? When it's blank it's called manuscript! I have this book of it so I can write down tunes that pop into my head, but I don't use it that much. Dx I call it 'sketching' because I'm rather sloppy when I write notes, ahaha.

Imagine this blank with just lines and no words. :p

And don't be silly, I think you have a wonderful voice! (hopefully I'm not just embarrassing you further by saying this, haha) :p

My compositions are few and far between, but usually they're in a minor or flat-major key. I like to make them sound very harmonic, and once in a while they switch from being cheerful to more solemn. ^^ None of my little melodies have lyrics (yet) because I don't think they would fit well with how I play....but I've never tried that hard to incorporate words, so maybe I should give it a go sometime! 8D

Oh that!! *Facepalms self* So that's what it's called! Nobody ever told me that was called a manuscript even when I was in highschool! TwT The first thing that popped in my mind with manuscript was a Thesis paper! XP But thanks! ^__^

Eh.. Hahaha Well, I'm trying not to be, but thank you again :'D

Ah, harmonies! ^_^ I love how musicians put harmonies in their work and sort of make it blend with each other. So switching from cheerful to solemn or the other way around... Kind of like Lugia's theme in the pokemon movie? ^__^

Lugia's Song

Yeah, why not? Give it a go sometime! >w< It's fun too, and sometimes challenging :D

When it comes to lyrics, the bands Nightwish, Symphony X, and In Flames are my idols ^__^ If you can tolerate a bit of heavy stuff, then I recommend these three (The first two aren't really heavy in my standards.. But some actually think otherwise :o The third one might be a bit heavy for some, so you can skip that) :3 Hmm.. Let's see..

"Creek Mary's Blood" - Nightwish
"Accolade II" - Symphony X
"My Sweet Shadow" - In Flames

How about you? Do you have some favorite things to listen to? ^__^

Yeah, kind of like Lugia's Song! I enjoy putting together a mix of notes that are joyful and sad. Resounding music makes me happy! ^__^

Hmm, I've heard of Nightwish but not the other two. To me the last song is the only one that's heavy-metal. .o. Interesting! I do think I like those lyrics.
The hardest rock I've listened to is Skillet, so I don't know too much about that style of music...*runs to Wikipedia* Excuse me while I read.... :d

As for songs I listen to, they're normally instrumentals like this, this and this. I have been attempting to learn that last one on piano since the game came out, but I keep getting distracted and annoyed at how fast it goes. :'D Once in a while, though, I'll listen to something with lyrics, such as this. xD

Ah, and I forgot to mention that piano and violin have a long history with my dad's side of the family. Just thought I'd put it here because you wrote (typed? haha) about yours. ^^

Okay, first off, I just now realized I can play Old Mac Donald without the recorder squeaking with I play the lowest note right now. (D) Other than that, I know 5 songs so far:

Gently Sheep? They must have been Sir sheep...haha. :b

I believe I can play all of those on piano/flute, though maybe not from memory. .o. When you're playing one of those harder whistles (lacking an extended fipple) it's nigh impossible to play without squeaking or going off-key at least once during a song.
Right now I have one penny and two tin small whistles. One's a toy so it can only go up two octaves, but the others can go three (though it takes a lot of breath, I must admit). xD

@Fim : I liked the Skyworld O.o I like how it progresses into something more melodic towards the end XD And awesome! Imagine Dragons is a nice band ^__^ And it's okay. Skillet makes dubstep too, which surprisingly for me, is interesting to dance to haha! *busts out terrible robot moves* XP

So your family's in it too? ^___^ No wonder. You look educated enough in music!

@Oddball : Welcome to the family! So you're into wind instruments too? >w< That must be a challenge, so I was told.

Instruments you play: Tin Whistle, I can play piano but I don't very often
Anything else?: I can read music, but not really while I'm playing. I tend to pretty much memorize the music, then play it. Then once I know the basic notes, I change/add some bits to make it my own. I can also hear a piece of music on almost any instrument, and reproduce it on the tin whistle after a couple of times of hearing it.

Hello there, JustMe! Nice to see you here. :3

A couple of years ago, an acquaintance of mine gave me one of his penny whistles, thus I've been playing it ever since. Apparently it helps if you're a good singer are are used to using your lungs (which I'm not). xD

Hehe, I am not a good singer, not even close! :P And my lungs aren't that great either because of my asthma, so although I can hit the higher notes, it means I can't play for long periods of time. I am getting stronger though, slowly.
It's cool to talk to people who know what a tin whistle is, hardly anyone does here in NZ, even a couple of music teachers. I guess it isn't very popular here.

Keep practicing, it's good for your lungs! "Give them some exercise!" is what most people tell me. ^^

A few music stores in my area sell basic tin whistles, but if you want them in a key other than D major you have to buy them online. ;w; My favorite whistle produces Celtic-style tones, and I use it all the time. >w<

The house I live in is a fun place to play songs 'cuz it has great acoustics (with a high-ish ceiling). :b I've got a digital piano in one part of the living room, but I usually have to wear headphones since my family likes quiet, ahaha.
