"Sure." I said with a shrug. "As long as I can stay on land, we can
take whatever route you want to." What I didn't say was the fact
that even being near water made me queazy. She obviously wanted to
stay close to her lake. Why should I be the one to deprive her of
it. I would just have to bear it. I would probably get used to it
after a little while.
"Just as long as I can see the water, I should be fine," I smiled
at him. I started off, leading the way east towards New York.
Brutis ran ahead and came back, each time he brought me back
something. A stick, a dead squirrel, a can. I laughed, then threw
it for him to chase. He could find a needle in a haystack if I
asked him. A sudden noise sent him flying back to my side. He
growled out into the forest.
"Brutis senses something," I told Jacob, flicking open my fans.
I pulled out my Glock, ready for a fight. The rustling grew louder.
I placed myself between Maurina and the nioses, aiming at the
bushes where they came from. Who knows what was about to come after
us.
I was surprised when Jacob placed himself in front of me. It took
me a moment to gather my wits. It couldn't mean what I thought, he
was just being his sweet protective self, right?
Brutis' growl brought me back to reality and I flicked open my
fans, preparing for a fight.
Out of the bushes came a large bipedal creature. It was covered in
red and black feathers, and had a long white beak with a black tip.
It's eyes were black with a bright blue iris, and set deep in its
head. It made a growling squawk noise when it saw them. Cocking its
head it looked curious, but wary. "Don't move." I said softly. It
didn't seem like an aggressive Ex, but I kept my gun on it anyway.
Better safe than sorry. The bird thing made a wide circle around
them, moving closer to the water. Crouching on all fours it seemed
to want to get a drink, but unwilling to take its eyes off the
possible danger.
I looked at it. I'd never seen something like that in all my life.
I stood frozen with Jacob. Thankfully, Brutis caught on and stayed
quiet. Soon, the creature took a drink, it's long neck moving as it
took in water. I watched, festinated like one is by a car wreck.
Eventually, it started off again, walking in a slow half circle
around us.
The bird monster had almost reached the tree line, when the sun
peeked out from behind the clouds. It glinted of a piece of colored
glass on the ground, and the thing ran for it. It moved faster than
I would have imagined. Before I could react, it was almost on top
of us. It snatched up the shard of glass and studied it, turning
and stroking the object. It lifted its head, which was now only
inches from my face, and stared directly into my eyes. It looked at
the glass again and sighed, before placing its treasure in my hand.
It gave a final squawk at Maurina and Brutis before running off
into the trees.
"I-did it just give you a present?" I asked, dumbfounded. From
everything I'd seen and witnessed, that was one of the strangest.
"I couldn't tell if it was an Ex or one of us with powers."
Brutis growled, looking in the direction the bird creature had
gone. I pet his head, calming him.
I stared at the small shard of blue glass in my hand. "Honestly." I
said closing my fist. "I don't think that there's really a
difference." I glanced at her, and noticed the slightly confused
look she wore. "Think about it this way. Everyone in the world
changed right? Some couldn't handle the strain of it, so they died.
Everyone else that survived turned into monsters, even us. Some
people just can't control the monster they turned into. We got the
better end of the deal, becoming creatures that look normal. But we
aren't normal are we? If some one were to see you in the water,
they would immediatly assume that you were an Ex. But your not an
Ex, cause you can control yourself." I gestured at the woods.
"That... Whatever it was, is probably a person who changed into a
monster but kept their mind. And if you think about it," I grinned
at her. "If you lived for the last two years as a giant bird thing
in the woods, you'd probably start acting like an animal too."
"I never thought of it that way," I looked at him under a new
light. I felt terrible for thinking the Ex's were all monsters who
only wanted to kill the rest of us. "I probably would have become a
sea monster if it wasn't for Bru," I smiled at him. I'd be lost
without him.
We continued on, careful to remain alert for anyone in the woods.
As we walked I couldn't help but wonder what might have happened to
me, had I given in to the madness. Many people had turned into
different monsters from mythology, but I couldn't think of one that
could teleport. Oh well, no sense dwelling on it. What mattered was
that I hadn't given in. I spotted a building in the distance,
nothing more than a small shack really. But what excited me were
the things standing in the field. Horses! I sped up to a steady
jog, saying over my shoulder, "If we could saddle a couple of
those, that would save a lot of time walking."
"A saddle?" I asked, where were we going to find a saddle. "I have
some blanket's we could use." I ran to keep up with him. I had no
clue how we'd catch them but I trusted Jacob. He hadn't lead me
astray so far. A lovely black mare looked up at us as we got
closer. She flicked her ears towards us then back away. I held out
my hand, hoping to attract her. "Here horsy, horsy, horsy."
I cooed. She stepped a foot closer, looking at me again.
I slowly aproached a large grey stallion, obviously the leader. My
father had own a ranch for many years, so I new how to handle
horses. There were two ways to get a horse to let you ride it. You
can get to know the horse, till it trusts you enough for a ride. Or
you can break it. We didn't have enough time to gain the horses
trust, so I would have to try a breaking. If I could get the leader
to except me as a rider, then the others might fall in line. The
stallion eyed me, as if daring me to come closer. I waited. A fly
buzzed at his ear, making him glance away. I teleported directly
onto his back, causing him to rear back in panic. He buck and
kicked and threw me around. Whenever I flew off, I would simply
teleport back onto his back before I could hit the ground.
I watched Jacob wrestle with the stallion. He looked like he had
things under control, so I returned my attention to the mare. I
pulled out a treat from my bag and held it out to her. "Hey, sweet
pea," I cooed, "You're such a pretty horse. Can I pet you
honey?"
I held out my hand, letting her sniff me. I slowly reached out and
stroked her nose. She whinnied softly, shaking her head. Carefully,
I stroked her neck. "There, see? I don't want to hurt you, baby. I
only want your help. Can you help me?" I asked, looking into her
intelligent brown eyes. She sneezed softly and bent her head. "I'll
take that as a yes," I told her. I moved slowly, not wanting to
scare her. She let me put a blanket on her and I climed aboard her
back.
Eventually the station stopped buck, more out of exhaustion than
exceptence. I gave his side a nudge. He didn't move. I pushed a bit
harder, and he reluctantly turned. He seemed to radiat a grudging
respect, as if he was impressed I stayed on so long. I guided him
in a large circle around the field, until I was satisfied that he
wouldn't start bucking again. I rode him back to Maurina, who had
mounted her chosen horse. My stallion nudged the other horse
affectionately. "Aww, that's cute. Who knew you were really a big
softy." I said grinning. Even if he didn't understand the words, he
clearly knew the tone. He gave a quick sharp buck, which sent me
over his head. Reacting quickly, I teleported back onto him. "None
of that now." I said patting his side. "You'll just have to learn
to live with my teasing."
"Oh! You poor baby!" I told the stallion, "She's your girl, isn't
she?"
I stroked the mares neck. She whinnied and nudged the stallion.
"Well, sweetheart, you'll need a name. How about Leona?" I asked
the mare, she neighed, looking at me with those warm brown eyes. I
laughed, "Leona it is."
"Bru! Where did you go?" I called, looking around the immediate
area. He popped out of the woods a few yards away. "Bru, can you
slowly come here? Don't startle the horses, you smart boy."
He slowly padded over. I stroked Leona, reassuring her Brutis was
fine. Thankfully, she didn't buck.
My stallion eye Brutis warily, before casually placing himself
between Leona and the wolf. He turned his head to look at me, as if
daring me to mock him again. I laughed, patting his neck. "Hey
chief, I understand. You want to protect her. I'm totaly supportive
of that." The horse turned back to the wolf, letting out a huff. I
glanced at Maurina. "Do you think Brutis can keep up with these
two?"
I laughed, "Bru? He was born to run. Don't let his size fool you.
He takes down deer with ease. We have to worry about him getting
too excited and wearing himself out!"
Leona nuzzled the stallion. She bent down her head and nudged him.
I looked over at Jacob, smiling at him, "So, are we ready? Leona,
wanna run?"
"Let's get going." I said. As we moved towards the edge of the
field, I was worried that the stallion, who I had decided to call
Chief, would simply refuse to leave. But once he saw that Leona was
following, he seemed unconcerned as to where we were going. We rode
for several hours, alternating between a gentle trot, and a lazy
gallop. In that time we didn't encounter any trouble. Appearenlty
most Ex prefer urban areas. I slowed Chief to a stop, gazing at the
horizon. A large building seemed to stab the clouds. The Empire
State building. 'Two years spent trying to avoid coming back to
this hell hole, and now I'm ready to charge back in' I thought with
a sigh. I spoke to Maurina. "I think we should sleep hear, away
from the city tonight. I don't want to be wandering the streets in
the dark."
Leona was gentle and patient with me. I'd never really ridden a
horse before, but she didn't mind. When Jacob suggested we sleep
out here in the forest, I didn't mind. Brutis could protect the
horses and warn us from the ground. We could sleep in the trees. It
was just a matter of keeping warm. But I had plenty of blankets. We
would have plenty of food as well.
