I turned to see Maurina's head and shoulders poking out of the
water. A set gills had formed on either side of her neck. Patches
of scale formed on her shoulders and face. The water was clear
enough to see that her hands had grown webbing between the fingers.
I felt a small amount of heat rush to my face at the sight of her.
Sure scale were strategically placed to cover certain portions of
her, but they left zero to the imagination. I averted my eyes
slightly. "Very interesting. Aren't you cold in there?"
"Not at all! This form keeps me warm. My heart rate slows and I
don't need to use as much energy," I laughed, oblivious to his
blushing. I dove back down and caught a very plump trout. I bit
into it, killing it with the venom from my teeth. I threw the fish
at Jacobs feet. "I brought a bag. It's in my cloak pocket. Can you
put the catches in there?"
Before he could answer, I dove back under. I felt so free and at
home! I could finally let myself work through the emotions of the
past year.
(I'm so done with this laptop. I tried to post, them sat for 20
minutes waiting for you to post back. turns out it never posted
-_-)
I pulled out the bag, before picking up the fish. Inspecting it I
found two rows of ragged puncture wounds along the sides.
Apparently her teeth had changed as well. The holes looked like
something you might find in a shark bite. I placed it in the bag,
being careful to stay as far as possible from the lake. For some
reason, when I got my powers I also gained a strong aversion to
bodies of water. Rain was fine, but anything bigger than a large
puddle made me nauseas and panicky. Bob stared hungrily at the bag.
I laughed, "You must be hungry! I'll ask Maurina to grab an extra
one for you." I could have sworn that he grinned at that, but it
must have been my imagination.
My old laptop was like that! Oh! It'd make me so mad! But my
parents got me a purple laptop for my birthday/Christmas! It works
so nicely! <3 )
Soon, I had plenty of trout to at least last Brutis, our guest, and
myself a few days. Surfacing, I walked back on shore. My long hair
kept my gills wet so I had plenty of time to store my kill in the
bag before wrapping myself in a towel and piling the blankets and
cloak back on. I wiped down my feet and pushed them inside my boots
before they could freeze. A smug looking Brutis walked over to me,
a nicely sized deer dragging from his mouth. He placed it at my
feet and looked at me expectantly. I laughed, then ruffled his
head. "Good boy! You're so smart!"
I again looked away as she dressed herself. Her wolf approached,
dragging a deer carcess."I could clean that for you." I said,
gesturing to the deer. She had probably done this before, but I try
to be as gentlemanly as possible around ladies.
"If you'll take care of the deer, I've got the fish. I need to get
the venom out anyway. I don't know if it carries over and is
poisonous to people who consume it, but I'd rather not take the
risk," I replied, taking out the first fish and gutting it. I aim
for the head when I kill, ensuring a quick death for the creature
and saving as much of the fish from the venom as possible.
"Ok." I said, walking over to Brutis. He seemed rather reluctant to
give it up, but a word from Maurina made him release it. I dragged
the carcess to a nearby tree, hanging it with some rope I had. As I
cut it, I couldn't help thinking about the days before everything
went south. Honestly, in some ways, the apocalypse was a blessing.
My life had not been pleasant. I tossed an organ, I think it was a
kidney, over to Bob, who munched on it happily. When I was
finished, I went to Maurina. "What should I do with it now? Do you
have a place to store it?"
"I'll make jerky out of most of it. For now, can you take it into
the house? Hang it in over the catwalk on the third floor. That'll
keep it up and away from anything. Brutis will clean up anything
that falls down into the basement," I told Jacob, packing the last
filet of fish into the bag. I cleaned off my fans on a clean rag I
brought for that purpose. Tying the bag around my waist, I headed
back to the house. I need my hands free in case anything got the
idea the fish I had would make a nice snack, along with me.
I walked back to the cleaned deer carcass, pulling my knife back
out. I cut it down, carrying it across my shoulders. Hmm. I wonder
if I could make it all the back inside from here in one teleport? I
had never tried one over that kind of distance, and I wasn't sure
what the reprucusions might be. Oh well. I'll never know if I don't
try. I concentrated on the building. I imagined opening the front
door, avoiding the hole, and climbing the stairs. I imagined
walking to the middle of the landing on the third floor. I felt a
sharp tug at the base of my neck, much more violent than normal.
When I "landed" the boards under me cracked slightly. I dropped the
deer on the ground with a cry of pain and clutched at my face,
which felt like it was on fire. I fell to my knees. The skin on my
back felt like it was writhing, like something was trying to rip
out of it. I fell sideways, as the world faded to black.
I climbed back up the wall of the house and climbed into the
window. Brutis had already returned to the house and was whining at
me by the time I had crawled inside. "Bru? What's wrong?"
He ran off then came back, looking to where he had run. Sighing, I
place the bag on the floor and followed him. He lead me up the
stairs to the third level.
"Bru, you know you can't have the deer. And Jacob hasn't done
anything bad, so he can stay for now." I told the wolf, turning to
go back. Brutis grabbed the end of my cloak and tugged, forcing me
to follow or end up nude! "Bru! Stop this!"
He didn't, leading me to the catwalk.
"Jacob!" I dashed to his side, cradling his head in my lap. I
slapped his cheeks slightly, trying to rouse him. He moaned but
didn't wake. "Bru! Help me carry him."
Brutis bent down, allowing me to heave Jacob onto the wolfs large
back. We carried him to the main living room on the third floor
where we had been staying. I carefully moved Jacob to the couch.
His face looked pretty scratched up. "Brutis, scout!"
Brutis ran off, searching the house. He returned just as I finished
getting my med kit. He barked once, letting me know we were alone.
I got to work slowly washing Jacobs face, making sure to disinfect
it before I moved on to check the rest of him. I blushed beet red
as I removed his jacket and shirt. His abdomen was very toned. I
tried to avert my eyes. He didn't need me checking him out while he
lay there. I tilted him up and inspected his back. It was worse
then his face! I set to work, cleaning the wounds and applying
bandages. I set him back down. Looking at his legs, I figured they
had to be fine. I did NOT want to take his pants off. If he didn't
wake up soon...well, I'd cross that bridge when I got there. I
covered him in blankets and tended to the fire. Then I went to get
dressed.
My dreams were full of turmoil. I was in a dark woods. Adrenalin
coursed through me. I was running from something. No, I was chasing
someone. I was filled with excitement at the thought of catching
whoever it was. Then I was in an old abandond building. I watched
as two men, one wearing a mask and the other a long hood, argued
over another man, who was tied to a chair. I recognized the men as
characters from an old Youtube series I had watched. Tim and Brian,
I think their names were. They continued to argue, until Brian
turned and saw me. He swore loudly, then bolted, Tim not far
behind. I moved over to the trapped man. I reached out a pale white
hand as he screamed. I jerked awake, gasping. I lay on my stomach
on a couch, my head hanging over the edge. It was only a dream. My
back was exposed to the cool air. I reached up touching my face.
The action brought a stinging pain. I thought about my dreams. I
knew now whose eyes, or rather lack there of, I had been seeing out
of, but why? Why had I dreamed of that old Internet myth? I sighed.
It was probably nothing. Any movement brought a sharp pain to my
back. I suddenly realized that I was not alone in the room. Maurina
sat in a chair in the corner, with Brutis at her feet.
With a jerk, I woke up. I looked over to Jacob, who looked back at
me.
"I'm sorry, I must have dozed off. How are you feeling?" I asked
him worriedly. I gently forced him back down. "You shouldn't get
up. You'll rip the scabs back open. I only got them to stop like,
an hour ago. Hungry? I made some soup."
I went over to the fire and got a bowl of soup.
"Sure, I'd love some." I was starving. If my back had scabbed up,
then it should be safe to lie on it. Despite her warnings, I
carfully maneuvered myself so that I lay on my back, with my head
proped against the arm of the couch. It stung a bit at first, but
was fine after a few seconds. "So what happened?" I asked. I
remembered trying to teleport, but everything was hazy after that.
I rolled my eyes. He was stubborn, but I could be too. I held out a
bowl to him. "I'm not sure. You teleported and I walked back. When
I got in, Bru lead me to you. You were on the catwalk with the
deer. Brutis and I took you back here and I cleaned your
wounds."
I scooped myself a bowl and dug in.
I took the bowl gratefully, drinking half of it in one go. "Yeah,
that's the last time I try to teleport that far." I ate more
slowly, trying not to spill from my akward position. When I was
finished, I placed the bowl on the floor next to the couch. "I'm a
fast healer, so I should be fine by tomorrow. At least fine enough
to walk around and help with things." I glanced at the window. "Has
there been any Ex activity? Sometimes the presence of one Ex will
draw more in. I want to make sure that Bob isn't going to cause
problems" I sighed. "Though I don't know what I would do with him
if he did. I can't kill him, and he won't stop following me."
"You've got a new pet," I laughed, shaking my head. "No, everything
was quiet. Brutis keeps a lot of them away."
Brutis puffed up and sauntered over to me. I laughed and scratched
his ears, "Yes you!"
I looked back at Jacob, "Sounds good. I'd love some help getting
this place back in order."
I moved over to my bed couch and curled up under the covers,
looking over at Jacob.
"I don't know if I would call him a pet. More like a prisoner,
whose to dumb to know he's a prisoner." I yawned. "Anyway, I'm
going back to sleep. Goodnight." I closed my eyes, but my mind just
wouldn't shut down. I sat for a while in the dark, wondering what
the future would hold. Eventually I nodded of to sleep.
"Alright, goodnight," I yawned. Brutis curled up on my feet and
fell asleep, snoring softly. Listening to his breathing, I fell
asleep as well. My dreams were peaceful. I hadn't had a restful
nights sleep in over a year. It felt wonderful.
I slept peacefully for a long time, lost in an inky blackness. Then
I heard it. It started as a low buzz, then grew until it was a high
pitched drone of static. It filled my mind, forcing images into it.
I could see the black outline of a man wearing glasses, staring at
me. He didn't speak, but words appeared on the white background
behind him. 'Hello? Hello? Can you hear me?' They said. I couldn't
answer, even if I had wanted to. 'If you get this message, we need
your help! We're pinned down and we won't survive long! Remember
these coordinates! 40.7217 N, 74.0059 W. Look for this symbol.' A
large circle with an x through it appeared. 'We'll try to hold out,
but please hurry!' I jerked awake, falling off the couch in the
process.
A loud bang forced me awake. I had my fans out and was standing
ready to attack right before I realized it was Jacob on the floor.
"Jacob? Are you alright? What happened?"
I sent Brutis out to scout the house just in case something was
there. Then I helped Jacob back onto the couch.
