Title: Introduction

Everything has a reason.

Why a group of young adults would find themselves living in the wilds away from society would be a very long and complicated story, but they each had their reasons.

To survive, to be free, to run away.

No one ever said they had to have a great reason, just that they had to have one. And reasons they each did have.

There were plenty of reasons why they all found themselves forming a society in the least habitable place they could find.

Everything that happens must first form from a cause.

...

Nature does not hurry, and yet everything is accomplished.

overgrown ferns. humid weather. resonant bird chatter. the sun bearing down her back.
she knew all this too well.

alex looks up at the worn baseball bat perched alongside her makeshift tent. an artifact of her past. its been to and fro with her for who knows how long. time became uncomprehensive to her in this dreaded jungle. it's been.. maybe, weeks? months? since she first arrived here, and she's already become reacquainted with the natural elements. the thrill of the kill, the unpredictability of what would happen next... except now, there was no one to keep her company. feeling unnerved, she readjusts herself. there wasn't much she could do-- she brought herself here. for a purpose.

Running

Maya remembered that she was running away before the stalkly vines and overgrown weeds struck her path. She'd already forgotten that she ran for a few days before stumbling upon the jungle, exhausted and encumbered with pain. The woman sighed as she sat overneath the grassy hijinks, catching her breath. A new question struck her mind; Where was she? A jungle? There's no mossy, humid jungles in Los Angeles or in California in general; Maya couldn't have ran that far .... right?

The woman panted her last breath of pain away after a few minutes, she kept fitting in the middle of moss-infected trees and leafy debris.

Hmm. How odd.

As it was, the day seemed to be of a normal kind-- the usual humid, dank, unpleasant to trek in. There was only so much ankle nipping bramble one could take before it just seemed to get old-- but this was the Agustus Phillip, an adventurer, the sole resident of this particularly unruly jungle.

But he could have swore, with much surprise, that he'd heard the sound of twigs snapping.

"𝘉𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘭."

Spontaneity and preparation came in conflict often when regarded amidst the decision-making of survival, and yet neither one nor the other was more useful to the body hoping to preserve itself. As he'd seen it, he could spend his time purposefully doing either, and yet too much thought on one seemed to invite more of the other.

Prepare too much, and you will have failed to be ready. Act too carelessly, and you will have failed to preserve your means.

There was something to it, the philosophies of Lauzi and of balance in nature, though to put such knowledge to good use often had its times of difficulty. He himself knew of the human being and its principle needs, though he himself had disagreed that mere nourishment and shelter had been all that a person could require.

He himself desired knowledge, though one might ask what use of thought he would have if he was the sole dweller of the wilds-- however, no one was around to ask, so he didn't have to answer. He did answer, however, for the sake of himself. He chose knowledge, intimate knowledge of reality and its interworkings, because it gave him a kind of nourishment that not his physical body required but something else within himself.

However, he had wondered if socialization truly were a need. Humans were social creatures, and yet for many years he had provided for himself and sated his desires on his own merit--

What use were others to him then, what could such company provide other than liability to his resources and time?

He had wondered if he could even find it within himself to ever integrate back into society after all he had seen and known of his reality. He couldn't expect another to know so intimately the truths of the Earth found in fractals veining trees from their roots to their leaves, the same that veined along his wrists and kept him alive.

And yet, once again, he thought for a second, he heard the sound of footsteps-- and he surprised himself.

What good were others to him? What rational reason could have brought him to follow the sound with his ears, and then his eyes, then finally, his own footfalls?

alex, preparing to venture into the wild for gathering, straps the bat to her back and adjusts her worn gloves. the object wasn't going to be very efficient to fight off any big dangers, however-- it was a sense of something important. treading through the endless jungle, hair sticks to skin with beaded sweat as she follows a known path down the bushes. her eyes quickly catch a series of disturbed greens going horizontal to her position. the abnormality of the prints peaks her interest. kneeling down for a through observation, it doesn't look like any animal's she's seen before... too big for any in the area. it looked manmade.

human.

the idea of it keeps her on edge.

Above, in the East, the sky seemed to be darkened, a sign that a storm was to roll in. There weren't many places to wait one out around here, and where he was, the ground was low and would be subject to flooding. He'd freeze to death before he found shelter.

Though, maybe, if he played his cards right, he thought maybe, maybe he wouldn't have to leave the area. He'd have to find the right spot, an area with enough trees clustered together and enough offshoots to support a wet cloth covering, he'd at least be able to redirect the rainwater off the side while he waited in the trees. Though depending on how strong the winds, his cover might tear from the thrashing. Still, it was a risk he might just be forced to take.

If he were wrong about this, he'd have a lot to lose, so he hoped he wasn't. He's roughed through emergency situations before, a lot of them were due to the weather and terrain. He would make it-- at least that's what he'd like to believe.

He wished he would have known a storm was coming, he would have been able to travel up toward the Northwest past the level ground plains around to the mountain base and make his way up to the shelter he'd found-- an abandoned shack. He should have just stayed there, but it was too late to be thinking of that now. He knew what he had to do, it was only a matter of setting up before this weather got the best of him.
