The Encounter (Short Story)
Forum-Index → Fanmades → Fanfictions → The Encounter (Short Story)It was a cold and rainy night. It had set a rather dull atmosphere around me, but what was about to happen was nothing short of supernatural.
I am writing this much later, but that night is still fresh on my mind. I was sitting in my room, by the window, reading my copy of ‘And Then There Were None’, a play by Agatha Christie. As I was reading it, a cloud of white smoke filled my room. ‘Huh’, I thought, ’That’s strange, a voice recording of the killer?’ Of course, I had not noticed the smoke at first. How would I have? 'Mystery' is the best genre ever.
The smoke seemed to be offended by me ignoring it and reverted to its non-ethereal form. I still did not notice, and it, quite rudely, interrupted my reading.
“Oh my God it’s the devil,” the words slipped out of my mouth. There was no mistaking it. It had to be him... right?
“You’re close, kid. I’m your devil. Your inner devil, you know, the Temptation?”
“What do you want? If it’s to do the de-”
“No, it isn’t. I’m here to offer you something. For this night, you may choose any power you wish, and I’ll grant it. But do remember, it will only last till midnight. Yes, we’re out of Fairy Godmothers, don’t ask why.”
I knew what to ask. I always wanted this. “Give me the power to see the future. To look into the abyss of time-”
“Shakespeare used that to describe the past. I’d know, I was there. Also, the future has about a million possibilities. I can let you see those, though.”
“Better than nothing, I suppose.”
“Good. Now, take this.” The devil handed me a sword. “Thrust that sword to the ground, and you'll see all the possibilities your brain can comprehend. I’ll be back in an hour, so, don’t get too attached!”
I took a good look at the sword. It looked like it was made of shadows. It probably was. I thrust it down. Suddenly, a host of dark clouds surrounded me. I wanted to see my own future. Who doesn’t? I looked into it.
“Oh, poisoning tomorrow? I did not want to know I could get mauled by a lion next week. Wait, crows kill?” I couldn’t continue. My Devil Incarnate had already returned.
“It’s not been an hour yet.”
“Time is kinda funny when you use that sword.”
“I think I’ll keep it.”
“No, you won’t”
“Try and stop me!” These were the last words he heard. MY sword was resting in his ‘stomach’.
“I just killed my inner demon, huh. Go me!” before these words came out of my mouth, the sword turned into some black dust.
It is rather fine now. I got a replacement Inner Demon soon enough. Good thing murder of demons isn’t punishable by law. Although I do wonder, is it possible I’ll get some free ice cream tomorrow? I could've known. In the end, I really doubt if things could have turned out better.
