I battle with my friend a lot but I tend to lose even when we set all our pokemon to lv 100. I don't like to spend money on battle items because I use the money on auctions. Any ideas on an item-free battle strategy?

Not quite sure how useful this'll be after three years, but if you're not using items, definitely pay extra attention to the Stats.
