I am pretty sure I know what I need to do, all I was wondering is if it needs to be done in a row.

Actually, they don't need to be adopted in a row. You get rewarded after adopting a random number of unknown eggs, even if there are a few known thrown in the mix as well. Do keep in mind that none of the information should be visible, so they need to be adopted, before they're 30 seconds old
