Title: BACKSTORIES
General Background For Both

Jalila and Dimity’s parents married
young, early college to be exact, so they never really found out
who they were as individuals. They would tell Jalila stories about
their whirlwind romance and make it seem like ‘love at first sight’
was real. They seemed to be the couple that people write about in
storybooks until they weren’t. Somewhere along the line their
mother realized she wasn’t in love with their father, but instead
she was in love with the idea of what they said their love was.
When they announced their divorce they also forced the girls to
pick which parent they would live with, thereby forcing the girls
to split their family up. This decision was ultimately up to Jalila
since she was 7 and Dimity was still 4. She knew that Dimity would
suffer either way so she thought that leaving with their father
would make things better. This decision still haunts Jalila and she
hates picking between two groups, especially when she cares about
both groups.
Jalila

Jalila and her father left Washington
for Maine, she grew up watching her dad pretend to be happy, she
eventually convinced him to go to therapy and that’s where she
learned how to handle her own depression from moving away from her
sister and mother. She struggles to keep herself happy, and often
feels like an outsider if left alone for too long and will consider
if she’s even worth having around. She doesn’t know how to handle
when things don’t go her way and resorts to running away whenever
there’s a problem, something she learned from her father. She never
had a step-mother with her dad, he was still in love with her
mother and never even dated again. She looks a lot like her mother
and learned to stay out if her father had been drinking to avoid
his anger, which really didn’t happen all that often. Other than
that, they had a good relationship until she was 13 and came out to
him as bisexual. He tore her apart, claiming her sexuality made her
selfish and unfair. This is when Jalila first learned there was
more to the story behind her parents’ divorce, it also made her
question if she could ever find true love. Eventually, she let it
go and embraced who she is and doesn’t care what he or anyone else
thinks about that part of her.
Dimity

Dimity had to watch her mother go
through relationship after relationship after Jalila and their
father left. Dimity had to grow up and take care of their mother
instead of having a childhood. She resents that Jalila left her
with a mess to take care of and never believed Jalila when she said
she had to pick between their parents for them both. She hates
Jalila and will hide it until it comes to protecting the people she
lets into her heart. She acts cold to keep people out of her life
because she’s afraid everyone will ultimately leave her. When she
was 11 her mother met a man she thought was right, so they moved to
Oregon. The guy was more interested in Dimity than her mother
though. Dimity lived in the attic and would sneak out of the window
to leave the house, she learned how to move quietly and quickly to
get away from him. Her mother would say that she was lying whenever
she tried to tell her about what was happening. Eventually her
mother left the man, but they stayed in Oregon. Her mother
eventually married again but Dimity didn’t trust this marriage to
last either, so she never got close with him. Her mother also
planted an idea in Dimity that Jalila and their father left because
they were selfish and didn’t actually love them. She believed these
lies and even now doesn’t trust Jalila actually cares about
anything or anyone besides herself. She holds a lot of anger
towards her father and her mother for not being able to stay
together, and blames a lot of it on Jalila, even though she has no
reason to.
