The Two Souls (powerofwaffle & Dragonsoul)
Forum-Index → Roleplay → Private RP → The Two Souls (powerofwaffle & Dragonsoul)Where elementals possessing humans and regular humans live side-by-side...
And no one knows who's who.
A few notes, just so we can remember:
-We're in a school, and the enrollment age is 10-12
-School ends at 16 years old
-After one turns 16, one can either continue education in a specific area, such as learning how to make weaponry or how to control weaponry
-The world is steampunk-based, so anything that people used is powered by gears and steam
And now, character form:

Name: Elliot "Ellie" Tolls
Age: 17 // true age: 607
Element: Earth
Sex: Female
Pref. Gender: Also female
Appearance: Small, only about 5'4", and curvy. Her skin is a dark, (milk) chocolate color and her hair is an untame-able mass of black curls, which only reaches the lobe of her ears. When she's not in her uniform's heavy coat and equally heavy clothing, she's wearing a soft, cerulean hoodie, with fuzz in the hood. She also wears either jean shorts or sweat pants. Her footwear tends to be on the clunky side.
-----
(elemental)>>>Tall, surprisingly willowy, with fine features. Dark skin, and short, close-cropped hair. Unable to discern if they are female or male.
Enrolled in school for: Mechanics!
Personality: A little shy at first, but quickly warms up to those she meets. When she talks about her machines, she becomes animated, gesturing wildly and grinning widely. She's a little innocent, but catches on quickly.
Her intelligence is a little below average, often needing to go to a few upperclassmen for help with construction, but her imagination is boundless. In a little notebook hidden under a loose floorboard in her dorm, she has designs for steampunk creatures such as firefly lamps that will act as a hovering source of light and her guide dogs, which can respond to commands and will show visitors around campus. When she shows people the drawings, they generally seem impressed, and she glows in their pride. However, she quickly grows embarrassed when they ask how she would make such a robot function, since she can't supply an answer.
Also might be a tad bit cowardly.
------
(elemental)>>>The Earth elemental's personality is hard to pinpoint, since they slip into characters so easily. They've been a simple merchant, a rich and prodigious bard, and, in their last life, a potter who was widely renowned as being insane. Simply, their personality is whatever they decide it is, and that's that.
Brief History: Average history, nothing too major. Sister of two brothers, followed in her mother's footsteps yadda yadda yadda. Had quite a cushy life, has never seen anything too gruesome. She was invited to the school when she was eleven, after she showed off a few of her steampunk sketches to her friends, who, in turn, told their parents. Upon hearing that unusual tidbit, as any citizen of the kingdom would do, they decided to invite Elliot over to take a look at her drawings. Before she could "Look!", she was enrolling in the school.
-----
(elemental)>>>The soul of the elemental who possesses Elliot is older than the race of humans. They have been around for longer than they care to admit, and find solace in living in a persona. Elliot is the fourth human they have possessed. The last one... didn't turn out so well. The soul was strong enough to survive possession, and living that life was more taxing than rewarding.
Relationship w/ Elemental: There's not really a relationship, per se. The earth elemental that controls Elliot has been Elliot since the moment she was born. Elliot's soul was weak, and unable to cope with the sudden appearance of another soul and was forced out of the body. There is no remains of Elliot's original soul.

Name: Evangeline "Evie"
Wynn
Age: 16
Element: Air. She and Ara share a body but they have a pretty tame relationship.
Appearance: (In addition to the image) Evie stands at 5"6 and always keeps her goggles in reach. When not wearing her pajamas or school clothing, Evie tends to wear the most comfortable thing she has in her closet, which is usually her brown button jacket, some baggy pants--not without her utility belt, of course--her worn-out combat boots, and a dark-colored scarf.
Enrolled in school for: Both, although she shows a bit more interest in mechanics.
Personality: Evie is rather spunky and outgoing. She's an optimist and stubborn to the bone, which is both a good and a bad thing. She holds strong opinions but they're usually justified. Evie is a bit reckless and inattentive--she likes to call herself a "risk-taker" anyway--and makes terribly bold statements and decisions. She's very passionate about weaponry.
While Evie is energetic and excited towards everything, weaponry will always hold a special place in her heart.
Evie enjoys socializing, but she is brutally honest and tends to unintentionally hurt people around her with her words. She's a bit innocent and oblivious, which doesn't always go well on her end. Evie is mildly sarcastic tries her best to hold back. She's very sensitive and is, in general, a good friend to others. She's slowly starting to make more rational decisions, because of Ara and can be a little bit protective of those around her. She is rather naive.
Brief History: Evie grew up with a single father who took great pride in his weapons and combat skills. He had graduated from the school of weaponry and, while open to whatever Evie wanted, was thrilled when she took an interest in weaponry. Evie's father, after years of begging, taught her the basics of self-defense--or, at least, a responsible amount for an eight-year-old. Besides that, Evie led a very tame and happy life with her father until she turned ten, to which she eagerly enrolled in the school of weaponry with the help of her father's ties.
---------------------------
Name: Ara
Age: 302
Element: Air. Possesses Evie.
Appearance: Ara shares an appearance with Evie and, because of this, looks like her. She occasionally shows up in Evie's lucid dreams and has the appearance of a young, long-haired girl, but her features are a bit foggy and undistinguishable.
Enrolled in school for: She tends to stay silent during school hours since most of her passion is in her element. She pays attention sometimes during combat classes, though.
Personality: Ara is a sweetheart. She is a tad bit bashful but she wouldn't quite call herself shy, although she rarely has to talk to anyone besides Evie. She likes it that way since she's never been the best at conversation. Ara is terribly innocent and childish, but her moral compass controls her actions, unlike Evie. Ara is wise and logical, despite her personality, and quite rarely will help Evie in decision-making.
She is terribly quiet and goes into a "sleep mode" for most of the day, so she isn't in Evie's head most of the time. She only takes control of Evie's body with permission and the two have a rather healthy relationship, as long as Evie agrees to use her elemental abilities whenever Ara wants her to. Dancing along in the wind is good enough for her. Ara is actually rather strong and has the ability to overpower Evie if she wanted to, but she only does it when Evie truly steps out of hand.
Brief History: Unspoken of.

Brief History: Unspoken of.
Elliot fidgets on a bench, rubbing the hem of her coat between her forefinger and her thumb, while biting her lower lip. A pile of cogs and gears sits heavily in her lap, a laughing reminder of her failure. "Do you put the steam compactor in the back or the front...?"
She tests it, using a wrench to secure the small steam device in the front. Upon the sudden escape of whistling steam, she drops her wrench with a gasp, tearing the steam compactor out from the front. "The back... okay then." She sighs, rubbing her eyes. "I'm hopeless."
Class let out four hours ago, and Elliot is still sitting exactly where she was sitting since then. Her professor let her know, quite clearly, that the exam for mechanics was coming up soon and that it was basically her only chance at redemption. Elliot has been sitting on the bench since that delightful conversation, trying to figure out how to make one of the most popular steampunk creatures, a basic spying crow that can communicate through a morse code of sorts, using steam and clicks to pass on information. Each time she tries to make it, however, her crow either explodes within a few moments (has that happened to anyone before, ever?) or it manages to disassemble itself.
With a sigh and a glance at the setting sun, Elliot gathers up all of the cogs sitting on her lap, pouring them into one of the many pockets of the coat. She stands up with a frown, and hunches her shoulders up to her ears, to avoid recognition as she makes her way back to her dorm.
She wandered over to the window on her tiptoes. There was a spark of energy in her chest as she opened them and a light breeze combed through them, the velvet curtains fluttering. Evie ignored the urge to bend the breezes in serpentine coils and instead looked over at the other side of the room. She had attempted to read into her new roommate's personality by looking at the decor, but Evie had never been too good at analyzing stuff like that.
They hadn't even told Evie their name. She had been called to Administration the moment she was let out of class and Evie was mildly annoyed by this. Even the tiniest shred of information would have been nice--a name, a gender... but no. She was quickly told that her old roommate had been expelled and that she would be relocated immediately... it was a good riddance to Evie, though. Her roommate had always been bitter to her for no particular reason.
Despite her past misfortunes, Evie was bubbling with excitement to meet whoever she was going to share the room with. She bounced back over to the cardboard boxes underneath the loft bed and began to rummage through them, thinking. All of the day classes ended about two hours ago... She shook away the idea that she would be paired up with yet another troublemaker. Maybe she has to tutor?
Idiot... the last thing we need is attention.
Elliot shoves away the thought, huddling deeper inside her coat. The clink of the gears in her pocket comforts her as she makes her way across the quickly darkening campus.
She hurries through the hallways of the dormitory, passing drunk last-years clinking glasses together in anticipation of the summer. One of them makes a grab at her, but she dodges them, muttering something under her breath that should never be repeated. Warbly laughter chases her down the hallways as she makes her way to her dorm.
When she opens the door, she proclaims loudly, "Dommi, I am an absolute disaster." Without even glancing at her roomie, she shrugs off her coat, throwing it in a heap of her other dirty clothing. "By the gods, I need to pass exams... What about you? How's combat going? Is your boyfriend still being an a..." Elliot's mouth drops open as she sees the not-Dommi figure in front of her. She rakes her gaze up and down the stranger's body, too shocked to be subtle. "Who are you?"
"I, uh..." The words were raspy and she took a moment to clear her throat before continuing. "I'm Evangeline. Evie. I guess they didn't tell you... there was a relocation. My, um, roommate got expelled... and they gave my old room to some first-years, I think. It's kinda complicated and it wasn't really explained all that well to me. Or to you, as it seems. But, uh... I guess we're roommates now?" she said, speaking a bit too quickly. Calm down. You're blabbering, she thought to herself, wondering if the thought had been influenced by Ara. She was beginning to think like her.
Her heart thumped rapidly and she begged it to slow down. Evie had seen this girl around campus a couple of times and recognized her face, but she couldn't put her finger on the girl's name. She was, honestly, a bit more scared as to how she would react. She inhaled sharply, grinding her teeth together.
Ellie shakes her head. "Evie, right?" She says exhaustedly. Without waiting for an answer, she plows on. "I'm Ellie. Also known as struggling mechanic. Look, Dommi was supposed to help me study. So. She's gone. Obviously. So... you have to help me study." Elliot claps her hands together, trying to shove away her sadness at losing her friend. "Deal?"
If Elliot had been a weapons user, they'd both be screwed over--Evie could certainly perform well, but when it came to paper tests and terms she was useless. She had always been more interested in mechanics, anyway (as much as her father hated to agree).
"Yeah. Yeah, I can do that. I need some reviewing myself, anyway," she said as she pulled out one of the boxes beside the post. She ripped it open with her hands, rummaging through the books.
"Whatcha making?" Evie asked, knowing that was the easiest way to pinpoint Elliot's knowledge; for this one, their professor had personally assigned everyone some sort of machinery to study a create based on their skill level (the Academy worked differently and was heavily praised for this). Of course, there would also be a paper test that was the same for everyone... but the creation part of the exam was significantly more important.
Evie sorted her machinery textbooks and strategy (and usage) textbooks into two separate piles, rubbing her hands together and resting them on her knees exhaustedly.
She loved being a dual student, but the work sure wasn't easy. The academy set the mechanics' exams a week before the weaponists' exams to take those like her into consideration, but it didn't help much--a week was never enough for Evie. She desperately needed to be studying terms and strategy... But it can wait, she thought to herself, sliding the stack of books forward a bit and crossing her legs to face Elliot again.
She felt the need to get this all out before she shows her new roommate the unfinished lump of gears and cogs. Like, she might be disappointed or something if she didn't warn her first. With her goal done, she pulled out the pieces, pouring them on her lap.
"Beginner stuff. The morse crow [eh, you see what I did there?? :,D] spy." Shamefully, she picks at a hole in her heavy pants. "I warned you."
"Oh."
The word had escaped from Evie's mouth and she immediately put her hand over it, not wanting to offend Elliot. Dear lord, she wasn't kidding about beginner stuff, Evie thought.
She vaguely remembered hearing rumors about a couple of students that had been assigned beginner machines, but... Evie dug out a stack of her old flash cards and put them to the side. She then pulled out a few books and plopped them on her lap, using them as a surface to rest her elbows on.
"That's perfectly alright. I'm a dual student, so I think I'll be able to help you a bit more than... well, a non-mechanic. So you know all the basic terms and stuff, right?" She took the flash cards in her hand and ran her thumb across the corners.
"Well, yeah..." Elliot nods. "Gears, steam compactor, engine, cogs, springs, all that good stuff." She shrugs off her coat, putting it off to the side as she says, "It's just that I'm terrible at following directions. And remembering them. I think I like the idea of mechanics more than actual mechanics, y'know?"
Ellie shrinks down in her heavy clothing, staring forlornly at the pile of unassembled cogs in her lap. "I don't know what it is..." She says, as if to herself. "It's like... I can see where they are supposed to go, but there's a disconnect. Almost when you're drawing, you have a good picture in your head, but you can't get it down on paper." She shrugs again. "If I had a page open to the instructions, I could maybe do it with a few errors, but that's the problem. The exam is without books, obviously. So I've been trying to build without books... and you can see where that's got me." She blinks a few times, flashing through her time with her family, each one congratulating on her accomplishments and genius... and then getting to school and being weighted down with homework, criticism, and embarrassment.
Shaking herself out of her reverie, Elliot perks up, trying to smile. "So, what do you have to help?"
Evie rubbed the back of her neck as she listened to Elliot, her back an ungraceful arch. She felt rather pathetic and unqualified, even with the task of a common morse crow. She took a quick look at the cogs and offered her struggling roommate the first solution that she could think of.
"We'll just drill the ins and outs of the crow into your brain, then. Three weeks of relentless studying's bound to get you somewhere! I've found that learning to make them over and over until you get them by muscle memory is a good start... although you might not be that way... I tend to learn all the terms and whatnot after all the actual building is strong," she said. Evie left out the fact that she hated terms and usually crammed them all a couple days before the deadline.
She knew that it was a weak method. She'd been it ever since her Basic Education days, and most of that material was long forgotten or, at the very most, vague. But it a start, and Elliot seemed... well, she seemed to need it. Not that Evie doubted her skills. After all, she must be good at something to get in the Academy in the first place. Even if Evie was a bit too afraid to ask what exactly that something was.
She perked up a bit. "For the terms, we could use flashcards. Do you work well with flashcards? I know some people don't."
She dumps the cogs off of her lap and onto her bed, and slides off, poking around. "Sorry," she mutters as she lifts the dangling comforter to peer underneath the bed. "I always lose my textbook."
After a few more minutes of searching, Elliot makes an aha! sound, and wiggles out from under the bed with a dusty, leather-bound textbook held high in triumph. "I always lose it," Elliot murmurs under her breath as she wipes nonexistent dust off its cover.
"'Page twelve, unit one, chapter three, first attempt at building,'" Elliot reads aloud. "Morse crow--an easy to assemble and interesting creature to create. Strengths: good for communication, sturdy, almost compatible with humans. Weaknesses: too loud for its original purpose, has a tendency to explode... and then it goes on in detail. I'll just try to follow the directions."
She looks up to meet Evie's eyes and then flickers her gaze down to the gears. "Well, here goes."
Indeed, the morse crow was awkwardly waddling into walls, steam hissing from it as it made a futile journey across the bed. "I suppose that the sensor gears in its feet and face might have been swapped. So... basically, I think it sees with its feet and feels with its face. So that's nice." Ellie laughs a small laugh. "It's better than anything else I've cranked out in the past week, though."
(just for the sake of not having lots of super short posts with just filler, I had Elliot finish the creation here. Otherwise, it would take forever! ;-;)
She raised her finger to tap a phrase on the crow's face but paused upon realizing that her knowledge of the morse code was very limited. Her finger circled in the air about three times before she tapped a simple 'hello' onto the crow's face. Evie shuffled back a little bit and awaited a response from the creature.
"So now we need to work on the face-feet thing. I think you also misplaced the steam compactor. But it should be fine--since you recognized the problems. You'll get this in no time!" She gave Elliot a reassuring look and brushed her hair out of her face.
She placed the creature on the desk next to her bed, underneath the lamp. She stretched, and then grabbed a few articles of clothing and a towel. "I'm going to go shower." She proclaimed once she had her items in a bundle nestling in her arms. "I'll be back later." And with that, she was out the door, walking down to the bottom floor where all the showers were.
(after your next post, do you want to just skip to next morning?? ;0;)
Evie was enlightened as she bounced back to her feet and skipped over to the window. She reached out an arm to shut it and a very small part of her resisted. Her hand hovered in front of it and she gave her head a firm shake and yanked it shut, fiddling with the latch nervously a bit before finally locking it.
Ara was unconscious, but she could hear the scolding. She pressed her tongue against the roof of her mouth and decided to finish sorting out her books instead. Her mind always wandered whenever she did labor work, but this time she kept it focused on Elliot and the Morse Crow. Elliot wasn't the brightest--well, who knows, she could be smart logically--but she was a lot more upbeat and creative than her last roommate had been. It was a nice change on Evie's part, at least. She still felt a tad bit guilty that she had replaced Dommi, but she would make it up. Somehow.
