A lonely NightWing named Astral has always wished for a normal, happy life. But Astral is very special, he is a mindreader. The ancient NightWing power he was born with is a blessing and a curse. It will make others afraid of you, make them jealous of you, or even make them want power over you. Can Astral keep his power a secret? Or will other dragons' greed, fear, and envy control his life, and lead him down a path of evil?

(This is a Wings of Fire fanfiction. The story takes place 500 years before the Dragonet Prophecy and the War of the SandWing Succession)

Fanart would be greatly appreciated!

The raindrops pelted Astral's exhausted wings as he soared over the vast sea. He felt a vague feeling of familiarity resonate within him as he remembered his mother carrying his egg across the sea, to the mainland. She wanted to make sure he hatched in the moonlight, which could not have happened on that miserable island they were forced to live on. Born under the silvery light of a single full moon, he had the legendary NightWing power of mind reading. Unfortunately, he and his mother were caught and brought back to that horrible island, where his mother was executed. Astral didn't know why she was executed, if all she did was leave the island. He was only one year old when they were taken back. Being the only known mind reader in the tribe, the other dragonets wanted nothing to do with him. Some feared him, others envied him. So, with his mother dead, everyone else in the tribe disliking him, and not even a single idea of who his father was, Astral was always alone. But now, six years after his mother's death, he was determined to cross the ocean and reach the mainland. Thoughts such as What if this is the wrong direction? and What if I can't reach it before collapsing? plagued his mind, but he shook them off. "There's no turning back now." he reminded himself. He had been flying for two days straight now, and it was getting late into the third day. There was nothing but blue, deep, endless blue. He hadn't even seen a small island for quite a long time now. He was starting to lose hope, and the heavy rain wasn't helping. But he kept going, and saw a large landmass in the distance. His heart fluttered with ecstasy. "I finally made it!" he screamed out loud. He crash-landed onto the ground, completely exhausted from the long flight. He had fallen asleep instantly, but was soon woken up by the sound of his stomach grumbling. Oh yeah, I should probably eat, then sleep. He decided to search for prey on the ground since his wings were so sore, and eventually found a few wild goats to eat. Although he didn't know it at the time, the flame he created to cook with was going to attract very unwanted attention.

Astral was in the middle of eating a roasted goat when suddenly, a very strange looking gold and white SkyWing swooped down and knocked him to the ground. "Agh, hey! Why did you do that?!" She didn't respond. She just glared at him, menacingly. It was making Astral feel very uncomfortable. Finally, she broke the silence. "Why are you, a NightWing, here in the Sky Kingdom? Are you a spy, trying to read our minds to find out secrets to send back to your queen?" "Um, actually I was just trying to get away from the other NightWings. As in, I don't want to go back to my kingdom. So your secrets are safe with me! Not that I know any! I definitely don't know any SkyWing secrets. I literally just got here." "Quit blabbering!" she yelled, and whipped him with her tail. "OW! I'm sorry! I've... never really gotten to talk to anyone before. Everyone in the tribe kind of hates me..." Suddenly her expression changed. But to what? Astral couldn't tell whether it was an expression of sympathy, pity, or something else... "Well," she said "come with me. I have a place you can stay for a little while." She took off into the air suddenly, and headed towards a small mountain in the distance. Astral had a hard time keeping up with her, her being a SkyWing and all. By the time they finally reached it, he was completely out of breath. He was still exhausted from his flight across the sea. He saw that there was a large cave inside the mountain. Does she live here? Why does she live so far away from the other SkyWings? Astral wondered. "Oh, I realized I never introduced myself. I'm Nimbus." She said. "And you are...?" "Um, I'm- I'm Astral. Astral the NightWing." He replied awkwardly. Astral never really had to talk to other dragons that often, so he wasn't exactly the best at talking. "Um, if you don't mind me asking-" She looked back at him. "What are you going to ask? Is it about my odd scale color?" "Um, yes. Yes ma'm." She laughed. "No need to call me ma'm. And I might as well not hide it from you: I'm half SandWing." Astral was... surprised? He didn't know how he felt about Nimbus being a hybrid. "My mother fell in love with a SandWing that was traveling through the Sky Kingdom, and thus, I was born. My mother, however, wanted nothing to do with me and my father fled back to the Sand Kingdom before he got in any trouble, so I've pretty much been alone all my life." She sighed and looked at the ground mournfully. Now Astral knew what he felt: empathy.
