To clear this up:
You can open Sky Gifts.
When you do open Sky Gifts, they are empty.
You were both right. (This is actually true - look it up.)

MoltresLava, you're right, maybe if it would be like KiraTrikk said... It would be the best solution :3

Perhaps there can be a separate page for these Sky Boxes, ones for Received and ones to give.
I also support this Idea. Maybe the most common item would be berries, but the rarest item would be a way to get a part for a Legendary Pokemon?

I support this idea but only to where it goes to a random person when you gift it. I don't like the idea of just sending it to your friends because there might be some users who might never get one for themselves.

To be the devil's advocate for HeavyRain: just because it's random, doesn't guarantee that everyone will get one at some point. It could very well end up that certain users that never show up again after completing the tutorial end up with good luck and rack them up, while a few people never see them. Like the Shaymin event: some got very lucky and found eggs after a few hundred clicks, others went through thousands and never saw it once.

Just so you know, I support the only gifting one to the same person once per x amount of time (or even that you can only receive one once per day or per x amount of time.

My only fear with this too is asking friend's to open boxes for you and having them send you the contents, or one could easily sell these to users who don't have a lot of friend's that would try to gift these to them. It might just be pretty easy to work around the "only others can open it" thing, not to say that I distrust everyone on here, but just stating a loophole that I just noticed.

I was just saying so it's kind of like a more higher chance for some users to get it. Not just the same people a lot of the time if it just goes to friends.
If you get what I'm saying.. sorry if I don't word it right. ._.

without the option to send to friends, users would be just as likely to just let the gifts sit around and do nothing... that could actually be fixed if there was a way for the gifts to disappear from an inventory after a certain time being there and into a random person's inventory

a user might never get one, but this might encourage people to make friends and strengthen the community as well

the only downside i can see about them being giftable to specific people is the fact that the boxes themselves could be used as trade material, and that's kind of circumventing the entire point of the gift, though i guess what someone does with the materials in the box is up to them, if it was legitimately sent by a friend, and not just two people making a deal with a box... that, and what mituna said about the gifts being opened by friends for the contents

i'm not sure i made any sense there lol it sounded better in my mind

It's okay, I know what you meant. ^-^ I just like to be difficult sometimes. But it is a valid point that being able to select who they go to specifically might not be a good idea, namely for the loophole I mentioned earlier. However, to make them purely random gifting would mean you might as well just be able to open them, because your chances of finding would probably be about the same as receiving one. All that finding would effect is how many are in circuit to other users in any one day.

Maybe you could have an option to increase chances of a group of users receiving one? Like, a button where a newbie will likely get one, or an online user will probably be the recipient, or even that your friend's will get an increase chance of getting that box from you. At that point, though, I think things are getting a bit complicated, and you miss the point of what the boxes were for in the game anyway.

((Autumn got to posting before I did, but that is a valid point that boxes could become currency as well.))

Maybe the things found in Sky Gifts shouldn't be too rare. Evolution stones and Pokeballs at the most. If you had a chance for a shiny or legendary, then I see why people would want to work around the gifting. But if it wasn't anything too valuable? Or maybe just have extremely low chances of valuable stuff. It's hard to barter with something that's probably going to turn out to be junk.

EDIT: Besides, when I came up with the idea, I though of them being a relatively common item. They should have berries, gems, maybe Pokeballs, and small amounts of Pokedollars mostly (in my opinion). And perhaps the occasional evolution stone.

If a Sky Box is automatically sent to a random user, I don't see how it's any different from finding an item yourself (like an itemfinder). I support being able to send it to friends or selecting a user from a list/typing in a username; with restrictions of course. Other than ideas already mentioned, maybe force whoever finds the Sky Box to select a user to send it to once it's obtained (including a random option plus any sort of receiving-based "cool down"). So they can't set anything up right then and there and, with a cool down in place, two, or more, people couldn't agree to to just send the other all of their Sky Gifts.

I also support that the contents of the box is a common item.

Instead of a cool down, I like how someone mentioned a limit on how many you can send to a specific person. For example, I could send three to Reshiram, but then I can't send her anymore until the end of the day. Then I could send two to Mituna, and I'd still be able to send her one more that day, but at server reset, all the counters would go back to zero. Does that make sense?

The limit could be any number, but I think anywhere between 1 and 3 is good.

Quote from MoltresLavaIn Explorers of Sky, you couldn't send them to random members - you had to choose a specific guild member. I like that this suggestion gives the option of giving them to random users, but making it exclusively for random users would be completely changing the idea from the games - not to mention that the item itself is supposed to be a "token of appreciation" in the game, and only sending them to random users completely defeats that purpose.

I hate to quote myself, but I believe that this should be a good enough reason as to why you shouldn't restrict it to random users.
If this seems too easy to abuse, why can't there just be a limit to the number of Sky Gifts you can send per day?
As I said, they are meant to be tokens of appreciation. If individual people are sending 5+ in one day, it kind of loses the "token of appreciation" feel and gives a more "thanks for existing" feel. That's ridiculous. Therefore, I think that having a limit for the number you can send at all would be the most practical method that is still true to the games.
Does anyone else agree with this?
Edit: If the limit was more like "Three per week, and you can't send more than one of those to the same person," people would think twice about trading them, as well, since they are harder to send.

I actually think that's a better idea that the "# per person" idea. It would make people really think about who they want to send it to.

i don't think i can really argue with anything moltreslava said haha

i really like the idea of tokens of appreciation

i also like the idea of people getting them at random though (because i don't know anyone who doesn't like completely random surprise gifts), maybe if there was an entirely different box for doing this so the sky gifts could be left as tokens of appreciation?

I can support AutumnStar's addition of a separate kind of gift for distributing randomly!

Just to clarify, Sky Gifts are to be somewhat meaningful and contain...? Will it be an "it's the thought that counts" sort of gift?

As for random gifting, I like the idea. Personally, I see the way mentioned earlier not gratifying for the giver. I prefer the thought of "donating" an item of your choice to be randomly sent off.

it would be up to riako what would be in the sky gifts, as there are items here and there available that wouldn't be in the sky gifts in the pmd games, so it could either end up a 'wow this is the best thing from a box ever' deal to a 'gold star, you tried' deal

appreciation is in the eye of the beholder, to where i'd be pretty flippin excited to get something like an evolution item or anything i could sell off for pokedollars, others might consider that a 'you tried' deal, and they'd only really appreciate something more than that like a box or key maybe i dunno

I guess it's the contradicting thoughts of giving a meaningful gift that really isn't anything special. Honestly, I don't care about what's in the box; I'm just trying to figure out how you people think. Because, right now, I'm confused...

Just because I'm not quite following your first sentence, I've never received a Sky Gift in PMD nor have I done any research into them. This is going to sound pathetic, but I have no IRL friends who play Pokemon, so there's less of a reason for me to bother.

to be honest, i didn't have anyone i could exchange sky gifts with either so i was unfamiliar with them, so i tried some research before i posted about anything

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Sky_Gift

and just because you didn't have anyone to exchange them with on pmd doesn't mean you wouldn't have anyone to exchange them with on pokeheroes :)

Actually, you can send Sky Gifts to your guildmates, and then check with Spinda. She'll tell you if your guildmates sent anything in return. (I've even gotten a Joy Seed once.)
