So, as far as I understood this it works like this:

If you TRAIN, the Pokemon will gain EXP and maybe a stat raise, at no cost.

If you feed it a BERRY, the Pokemon will only gain EXP and you will loose the berry.

Isn't this kinda... counterproductive? I mean, shouldn't it "cost" more to gain the chance of an additional stat raise.

it gets more EXP when you feed it a berry.

Training: a decent amount of EXP and a slight chance to get the stats up
Feed: a large amount of EXP and no chance of getting a stat raised

the 0 chance makes up for the small EXP gained.

Another thing I've been wondering: When I train the Pokemon, sometimes they get like 50 EXP and sometime 250! Isn't this randomness maybe a bit too wide?

its to help pokemon that require a lot of EXP to level up. for example Raiko's Emboar, it needs a lot to level up
the less evolved pokemon need less. its the same thing for the real games.

I think that Pokémon get more EXP at higher levels, Mirej.

Umbreon is right. It would be ridiculous, if a Lvl 50 pokemon would gain as much exp as a level 1 pokemon does.

And feeding berries does also have advantages for the one who interacts: the chance of finding money and golden game chips is strongly increased.

i noticed. i have gotten up to 7 GGC on one click before by feeding it a berry

also i remember seeing a berry for sale for like 10000. why was it so much? what was special about the berry?

That was one of 5 or so berries that were very good at making Poffins in the Sinnoh games, and most sites make those 5 berries very rare/useful as well. I guess it gives a LOT of XP here, or has some use we don't know about.
