I was thinking, maybe you can do a little something like that on here!
You can buy a pickaxe from the shop in Key Items, which will unlock some sort of cave where you can go in and mine! You can make it either like the original, or you can do an entirely new feature! I think it would be a cool way to obtain items, maybe even Mystery Boxes and Keys too? Tell me what you think!

EDIT: This thread was moved to implemented before I finished these, but I might as well post them anyway:
It would start as a grid like the Lottery, and you can click on ten squares.
When you hover on a square, it will be highlighted to prevent you from clicking on the wrong one.
When you click on it, it goes dark and counts as one of your ten clicks.
As you click on more squares, you may find a bit of an item.
(You shouldn't be able to see the rest of
the item... Ignore that, please.)You'll want to finish uncovering the item so that you can get it once you click on the rest of the squares.
When all ten squares have been clicked, you will get any items that you uncovered.
Once you click OK, the mini game will end and you will get the message "The wall collapsed!"
Note that I know that this was already moved, but I felt like posting these anyway. I know that this (probably) isn't how it is going to work. :p

The idea has been "modified" since then and I'm pleased to tell you that a new feature - that is similar to your idea - will be released this month.

It was moved to implemented because it is supposed to be done this month. It isn't here just yet, though. ^^

But the "exploring a cave" and "finding random gems" idea was implemented in this feature.

It's like the treasure game in the game center, but with more squares on the grid and with a variety of rewards to be dug up. [And multiple turns instead of hit or miss with 8/9 chance to miss]
A list of possible items could be:
PD [or another ancient form of currency that can be sold for PD]
Relics [instead of PD, for an option]
Gems [you can find gems in mines irl]
Fossils
Ancient Boxes and Keys? [would be a new item where the boxes are only found in mining, while the keys can be found in mining or through Rumble Missions]
Vitamins?
Star Pieces?
Explorer Bags?
Pokéball ?
Greatball ?
Ultraball ?
The Explorer Kit would be an item that could be added to the shop. Greg could be the NPC in charge of this feature (as well as the Gem Collector features) and you could pay him for every trip into the underground that you get to take. (I vote for a PD price for this, much like the Royal Tunnels. Maybe have different levels with chances at finding different things? The rarer stuff being more costly at a chance at it, though you might still get nothing as well.)
Okay, I think I've put too much energy into this post for something that I'm doubtful will come to light XD And I think I haven't explained it as well as it could have been explained.

As for which legendary, I think Regigigas would be perfect and the item could be something like Rock Key, Ice Key, and Steel Key, which would combine to make the Gigas Key and help to summon Regigigas at the Ancient Cave. Not sure if I've put too much thought into this, but I thought I'd just share these ideas.

As an alternative for which Legendary... Maybe you could find a Dragon Skull and a Light Stone/Dark Stone (to encourage trading, maybe you can only get one of the two stones depending on your Trainer ID or something), and use them together to summon Reshiram/Zekrom, depending on which Stone you used. They're both things that are found underground, so they might work. ^^
Edit: Alternatively, what about a Relic Sword, which can be used to summon a Cobalion, Terrakion, or Virizion, and once you have all three of them, you also have a chance of getting a Keldeo when you use additional Relic Swords?
