Didact grinned at Copper. "I really just want to see card boy get his comeuppance."

There was a rumbling laugh from the other end of the table.

"You see what I'm saying, right?" Didact asked as Jack settled back, still grinning. The Forerunner looked around and nodded. "Yes, I think I'll stay for now."

Didact sat back in his chair and looked at Copper, thinking. Eventually, he replied, picking his words carefully.

"The Grimm are a viable, direct and immediate threat to the security of the world. The Mantle of Responsibility, in this flawed, old Forerunner's humble opinion, dictates that I must make it my duty to struggle against them. And while this Council makes it abundantly clear that matters are being taken care of, I feel it would be wrong of me to not do anything. I will likely find myself at the front lines. As for this merry band of misfits I find myself in... I can say with confidence at this stage that their energies are, by and large, focused on... well, things besides threatening this world. As such, I'd quite like to relieve them of the burden I pose."

There was a pause.

"That being said, perhaps I could stick around a bit longer. Better safe than sorry."

Jack, who had obviously been listening in, took his turn at chuckling.

"Well, it is true that my better judgement rarely prevails. Regardless, you heard two words indicating resignation, my Queen. Volunteering may be too strong a term. That being said, you'll hear no complaint from me." Jack said, inclining his head towards her.

Didact gave a small 'hmph' of laughter. It wasn't the high-and-mighty Jack he was getting used to, that was for sure. Nevertheless, the demon's carefully formal tone betrayed something of a smile in his voice.

Jack sat back with a sigh, looking out at the assembled audience at the lower tables thoughtfully. So, this was how it was going to be, huh? Just some other enemy from some other place and some other reason to be thrown into the fray.

"Very well." he muttered to himself. It wasn't as if he'd want to do anything else. He glanced over at the Didact, wondering how the Forerunner would deal with the coming struggle. He seemed to be equally wrapped up in his thoughts, but was still listening intently to the back-and-forth between the Queen and the others. Jack figured it was all more or less formalities at this point. Draugnur's concerns, Thryssa's forces, the mobilisation of regiments... ah, well. The appropriate responses to the situation, to be sure, but nothing that hadn't been seen before.

Didact listened to the briefing with rapt attention, leaning forwards slightly. So the problem was, simply put, that there were just too many of the damn things. Well, he certainly knew how enemies like that could be. But, looking down at the world map, this seemed to be on a somewhat worrying scale.

Jack had listened as well, constantly having to check small movements such as absentmindedly tapping a foot. The briefing had told him little besides that which he had guessed already, but it was always good to be aware of the exact nature of the threat. He'd never come across these Creatures of Grimm before and was grateful for the opportunity to get to know his enemy, and their MO, a bit better. What really captured his attention, though, were the Queen's words. Didact hadn't really seen anything too curious about them, figuring that the Queen was just picking someone out of the pool of people qualified to deal with the threat and hadn't really thought about it beyond that. Jack, on the other hand, had raised his eyebrows and looked towards Sliuril to try to gauge her reaction.

Politics and succession. How tiresome.

Didact had long since decided that, despite his overwhelming urge to do so, he wasn't going to activate his scanners here. He had to content himself with what he could see. It was certainly a thing to behold. Despite that, he felt strangely at home so far. The old War Councils of the Forerunners had been much like this. With a few fairly obvious differences that he didn't feel the need to mentally acknowledge.

Jack silently watched each of the siblings take their place. His eyebrows slowly crept upwards at Thryssa's appearance.

Both stopped looking around and focused on the person- Captain Eyrie- that had flown up to the stage.

As he followed Copper, Didact figured that it would probably be a good move to keep his eyes down. However, something in him rebelled at the idea. Sure, he was in a room filled with people who could end his existence with little more than a thought, but it wasn't as if it was the first time. He straightened up to his full height and, seeing Jack give a nigh-imperceptible nod of approval, strode after Copper up to the high table and took his seat. He sat up straight while waiting for the next stage of the proceedings to start, fingers interlaced in front of him, as opposed to Jack, who had settled into a slightly more comfortable position. The demon was leaning slightly to one side, chin resting on his knuckles, still looking out at the assembled beings.

Jack gave the space a slow, sweeping look, eyes narrowed below the Mask. His gaze passed over each of the assembled gods and goddesses, the demon gleaning as much as he could. Finally, seemingly satisfied with what he had found, he gave a small nod and walked up to the seat that had appeared for him.

Didact stood besides Copper, hands clasped behind his back. His eyes flickered from face to face, but he didn't move otherwise. He wasn't quite sure what to do. Being here as Copper's guest, he had been relying on her to guide him through the entire encounter. Seeing her standing motionless was disconcerting for him, to say the least. Eventually, aware of all the eyes seemingly fixed on the goddess, Didact leaned in towards her.

"Copper?" he muttered, still glancing from person to person, wondering if it was the right move and how badly he would be judged for it. And of course Jack had taken right to the sequence of events. Why wouldn't he have?

Jack nodded and turned to the Didact. "Give me your gun."

"Wait, wha-"

"You have a tendency to raise it at bad times." Jack said, snatching the weapon away from the Forerunner and stashing it away under his cloak, held in place by magic. Didact was starting to protest when the demon strode through the portal. The Forerunner sighed and followed him in.

Jack tilted his head, eyebrows raised. "Let me consider that." he muttered and slipped into the Void.

"Where-" Didact began.

Jack, having completed quite a long and animated discourse with the rest of the Court, reappeared. "It should present no problems and, on my part, I'd be honoured. Don't expect people to be happy to see me, though."

"One day you'll explain this entire... thing... to me." Didact vowed.

Didact narrowed his eyes at Copper's words, his gaze never leaving the man. After what felt like a few seconds too long, he straightened up, bringing his gun down to cradle loosely in his arms. Jack silently let out a pent up breath. Both of them listened to the Herald in silence. Both had their eyebrows raised by the time the man was done speaking. Didact tensed up a bit once more when he said there was another decree. He looked like he was about to say something, quite possibly along the lines of 'get on with it' but Jack tapped the Forerunner twice on the shoulder and shook his head.

Didact glanced at the demon and shrugged. The two of them turned back to the Herald, staring expectantly.

Jack crossed his arms and stared at the new arrival, head tilted. His eyes glowed as he used the Sight to look at the man. Copper and Sliuril had acknowledged the man so Jack figured that there was no reason to start blasting. However, the moment he opened his mouth, the demon decided that he dislike him intensely. Picking up on the word 'Herald', Jack guessed quite a bit. Still, he didn't know much about this person and he was curious. Jack figured it was better to remain silent. It wasn't as if any questions he might have weren't going be asked by-

"Who the hell are you?" Didact growled, levelling his weapon at the man.

Ah. There it was.

"I mean... the boy's not wrong." Jack muttered, kneeling down.

"Check yourself." Didact warned from behind him. The Forerunner was keeping a fairly safe distance.

"I know what I'm doing." grunted Jack, who didn't have a clue what he was doing. Slowly, he reached to touch the creature's bony forehead, trying to get a read off it. The task was made difficult by just how much it was struggling. He supposed it didn't really matter either way. He'd never required physical contact to see what a creature was thinking in the past. Here, there was nothing. Just a dark, fiery rage.

"Another test, you say?" he asked, straightening up and stepping back. "What do you want to do with it?"

Both Jack and Didact had whipped around at the screech, the Forerunner bringing up his gun. Jack had begun charging up a spell but it dissipated once he saw that the situation was under control. He approached the pinned creature.

"Ah, yes." he muttered, switching to the Sight. "The first three things to address when coming across something. Frankly, I think you should have prioritised edibility."

The demon continued switching to and from the Sight while the Didact approached, weapon still at the ready.

"How curious." Jack said. "It has no soul. Not a vacuum, like the Crawler. It's just... absent."

Jack got off the Cryptum and looked around. Didact disembarked shortly after him and looked at Sliuril and Faith.

"Ah, what a touching reunion." The Forerunner said, walking back towards his own ship. Jack gave a huff of laughter and raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms. After a moment, he followed Didact.

"Don't try to separate those two is all I'm saying." he muttered.

"Please, I'm rash, not suicidal." Didact replied.

Beowulf saw the other Cryptum descending and followed suit. He gently brought the ship to the ground opposite its counterpart and the doors hissed open at his silent command.

("No." said Beowulf, who had already been established as a rebellious, murderous and somewhat deranged character.)

"Of course." Beowulf hissed. The Cryptum, which had been drifting aimlessly through the mountains, made a sharp turn and began accelerating.

Didact sighed. "As you say."

"Mmhm. That's what I thought." Jack crossed his arms and nodded to the Forerunner, a small smile on his face.

"Just me. Also, a point of refutation. Regardless of my religious views, now that I know she exists, there's no reason to believe in her any more, right? I mean, I don't believe in doors or walls. They're facts. And I lost my faith in people a long time ago, so I don't believe in her in that regard either." Didact shrugged. "No offence, of course, you seem like a great person and all that." He added, inclining his head towards Copper.

"By the King, can we kill this one?" Jack asked.

"Have at thee, card boy." Didact muttered.

Jack shrugged. "I don't imagine that anyone from the Court would object to that. Well... Death might complain a bit, but he complains about all Immortals." he chuckled.

"Excuse me, Death?" Didact asked, tilting his head. "The Death?"

"You really don't know a lot about us, do you?"

Didact spread his hands, palms up. "What, am I supposed to?"
