After practicing a few more times, now in the presence of Willow, Samton stops. Dusting off his robe, he turned to Willow. " How is your life in the academy, Miss Delacour? Chosen a circle yet?"

Recently, I had used an event pass, and hatched a shiny a few hours ago. I suppose I had a tab open from adopting an egg, because when I checked my party just now, I also have an egg from the event pass.

I guess this is because the tab reloaded when I reopened it?

"Greetings, Miss Delacour." With a smile on his face, Samton propped himself up. "Well, certainly you are aware of our recent... issue. I just wanted to gauge how much more difficult the earth element has become to use." He gave a chuckle and continued. "Strange to hear from me, I'm sure, but you're up rather early. How are you?"

The following morning, Samton was up rather early, and found himself taking a stroll by the mage fields. There were a few seniors practicing, he saw, but nothing had come to his attention. Sitting down on the ground, since he no longer had the boulders he could count on, he began to circulate mana within his body. A technique used to improve one's control, he repeated this action for rather long.

After some time of doing this, he opened his eyes. Raising his palm to the front of his face, he began concentrating on a single spot within. A small particle of what appeared to be earth appeared within, and the size increased quickly. As it reached around the size of a football (or soccer ball, however you will), the ball of earth suddenly turned back into mana, which was dispersed just as quickly. To this, Samton sighed.

As if in reply of something, Samton stood up from his seat. Having put all the utensils down, he gave a small bow and started to take a stroll outside.

Tien, having seen this, finished what he had on his plate himself, and then excused himself as well.

Samton once again chuckled. This was certainly interesting. Either the one approaching him was extremely good or extremely stupid, and for reasons he decided to lean more towards the first. "Well, that sounds interesting. You have me curious about your 'research'. Well, let's get along well, Mr. Klause. We can finalize later on, shall we?"

After nodding a slight bow at the end of this, Samton returned to his dinner, eating a bit faster than prior.

"An honour, Mr. Morteum. If I may ask, why me?" Samton narrowed his eyes. It was brave of him to approach so early, and be so forward with it. Compared to the usual secretive and scheming nature of the nobility, certainly a step in the right direction, as far as Samton was concerned. Still, to agree or disagree on this alone would simply be premature.

In reply to Thalia's answer, Samton allowed himself a small chuckle. "Very well. If you wish, do meet me after the dinner."

"See anything interesting, Miss Feryer?" Samton asked without looking away from his dish. The rather intense stare was hard not to notice, so maybe she wished to say something?

Samton chuckled slightly at the, frankly rather strange, new 'applicant'. "Well, you're rather subtle, aren't you, Mr. Morteum?"

The young man in front of him was doubtlessly Klause, the young and rather tall child of the Morteum family. It was quite usual to hear rumours about him, the so-called 'freak among freaks'. His giant stature had certainly earned him quite the reputation, although not necessarily helpful. A considerable candidate for an ally, though, since Samton did not care enough to fear the Morteum family. It was mostly just fear of the unknown, he had guessed.

"Well, yes... trial and error will be necessary." Tien spoke in reply to Kynik. He was having salad, and continued eating after saying what he wished to.

Samton, who sat closely by Tien, was eating his dinner without many words. How many, he wondered, would he have to decline? Most invitations he received were so obvious in their intention to use "the prince", it was almost funny the first few dozen times. As the solicitations, including from seniors, reached nearly three scores, he decided that would be sufficient, and had, from then onwards, stopped sticking by to socialize. Luckily, nobody would disturb him during dinner. They would not wish to annoy him, after all. Rather, he ought to be much more careful after dinner. How wonderful it would be if he could just, look at someone and discern their intentions immediately! Oh well, couldn't be helped. As he kept thinking he continued eating as well.

Chapter 10: A Winter Wonderland

The shining trees swayed to the merry welcome tune the Northern Cardinals sang for us. As we entered the village, the villagers smiled at us, some even waving at me. The villagers were mountain elves, as it seemed.

Mountain elves are a race much similar to, but not the same as, elves. The most distinct feature of elves, the long ears, are present even in mountain elves. Mountain elves seem to be much paler, though. Perhaps it is because the sun rarely reaches the region? They are wearing woollen clothing, and there also seems to be a cape of sorts, made of feathers. It’s not a huge surprise, but they’re still wearing much fewer layers than I am. I could also see a few children playing near the village square. They seem to be making snowmen. Truly a wondrous experience, it must be! However, unlike them, who seem to be around 5 years of age, I am much older. I must control myself.

“After we greet the village elder, you can go and play!” Elder Teril whispered to me, breaking my longing gaze towards the playing children. Turning to look at him, I saw him sprouting a sly smile. I am not such a kid, you know! Although it does seem fun... Oh well.

As we reached the village square, a very old mountain elf greeted us. “Welcome to our village, dear guests. I hope you will make yourselves at home once again this year. The tournament is scheduled for this afternoon, so feel free to enjoy yourselves until then.” With these words, he bowed once again. Tournament? I wonder what he meant by that?

My questioning gaze shifted to Elder Teril, who answered after some thought. “It is somewhat similar to the Martial Arts tournaments held in your cities, although here they compete using Ice magic.”

“Ice magic?”

In the rather short while I was with the elves, I have seen wind, water, light and fire magic. Since this is a different kind, I am rather curious.

“Curious, aren’t you?” The old mountain elf who greeted us grinned. “Well, you’ll see it soon enough, haha!” He then turned to elder Teril. “So, this is the human you had picked up, hmm? C’est très surprenant, I’ll tell you that! So much so that the Emperor of Winter, Roi d'hiver, wished to meet him!” Once again turning to me, he smiled and spoke; “It would be great if you could come with us to see him.”

What is this?!! As far as I’m aware, they are referring to the Fairy King of Winter, right?! Meeting one fairy king itself was considered a blessing of a lifetime, why a second?!! Nonetheless, it would be unimaginably rude of me to refuse. Elder Teril seemed to think so too, as he nodded when my eyes drifted towards him. “Thank you very much for the offer. I will gratefully accept.” Well, not like I had any reason to refuse, anyway. Hearing my reply, the mountain elves smiled. The old mountain elf who was speaking to us nodded. “Thank you very much.” He then looked as though he had just remembered something, and then turned to me once again. “Oh yes, I have not introduced myself yet. I am the Elder of this village. My name is Winstern. I hope you enjoy our village!”
In reply, I gave a polite bow and replied, “I am Marciel. The village and surroundings seem wonderful, Elder Winstern!”

After replying with a smile, he guided me, leading me to what appeared to be their ceremony hall.

As we entered the hall, I noticed how different it was from the one in our village. The walls here seemed to be made of ice, having a bluish, crystalline look. As I entered, the mountain elf who seemed to be the priest announced as such.

What followed was an experience slightly similar to, and yet extremely different from what I once had before.

A cold wind blew past me. It appears as though it came from every direction. The song of northern cardinals which I heard while outside started resounding in the halls, along with the faint humming of a winter blizzard. As I stood there, marveling once again at the rather magical experience, the sound of the blizzard rang louder and louder, as though it was getting closer and closer. Had this been my very first experience meeting a Fairy King, I am rather certain I would have fled.

As the blizzard became louder and louder, I felt as though it had meaning. As though the blizzard itself was chanting something.

As the sound became louder and louder, I saw the Elder kneel, and did so as well. The sound became louder and louder, the room became colder and colder…

Suddenly, I felt something whoosh past me. In front of me, it started revolving in circles. Three more came from the other three directions as well. They looked like spearheads of sorts, and they were rotating on four different circles, in alternating directions. The heads were pointed in the direction they were moving in. As I was observing them, more and more came from all four directions. They started circling around the same point. As more and more arrived, it seemed as though they all together formed a sort of cylinder. It was nigh on impossible to see anything. They kept on revolving, faster and faster.

Suddenly, the sound stopped. The revolving spearheads were dispersed in all directions. A few passed through me, much to my surprise and shock, but I was absolutely unhurt. As I looked at the place about which the spears were revolving, I knew what I was seeing.

Thank you, once again for reading. Please do let me know your thoughts.

It's getting more and more drawn out than I expected, but that's fine, I suppose. I was expecting to time skip by the next chapter, but seeing as how it's going, the time skip will have to wait.

I seriously wonder how the entrance of the Emperor of Winter is. Frankly I feel like it's pretty hard to convey the majestic feeling I wanted them to have. Did it work? Please lmk >~<

Another thing of note is that my little poems at the start of the chapter are getting really hard to come up with. If they seem sloppily done, I'm sorry, feel free to send a wake-up slap over. :D

Also, I'm really starved for attention reactions, so please do say your thoughts. Thank you once again! Have a wonderful day and I hope you keep enjoying! ^^

Chapter 9: To A Winter Wonderland

It has been around four months since I have been taken in by the elves. The passing of fall has led us to a somewhat bleak atmosphere. It is not too cold, but the whole forest feels much bleaker than before. The first day of snow was yesterday, but I couldn't help but feel ever so slightly disappointed. There were a few snowflakes on the ground, yes, but my hope of a land clothed in white seems unreachable still. I greeted Elder Teril today as well, as we were about to start the class. Strangely enough, elder Teril does not seem to be carrying any books with him, though?

“Marciel. How do you feel? Is it cold?” He asked, perhaps noticing my slightly sad demeanor. I attempted to put up a cheerful front and replied, “I feel great, Elder! Thanks to the woolen coat from Tyler, I don’t feel cold at all.”

This was one of the few things I realized were extremely different from how humans perceived elves. Elves do not eat meat, true, but that does not mean they despise using or hunting animals when necessary. It more so seems to just be a matter of digestion, similar to how we humans can’t eat grass.

In these past few months, Elder Tyler has taught me a lot. My spear arts have also improved a lot, considerably. I still don’t want to touch a bow, though. The geography lessons were, understandably, limited. I learned quite a bit about the forest but the land outside is not touched upon. Arithmetic seemed so simple at first, but how is it possible that I always end up making the silliest of mistakes? Complaining aside, I have learnt up to double digit multiplication.

What interested me at first was biology, the study of living things. My knowledge prior to coming here was limited to “Animals and plants have life, just like us.” Here, I was taught about various plants and animals. What really interested me though, was the very basics.
The living beings of this world are all together referred to as ‘Creatures’. Creatures can be vastly divided into two. Basic, and Magical. All living creatures have magic, but only the Magical creatures are capable of using it, hence the term ‘Magical’.

Basic creatures are everyday animals, trees, plants, etc. Magical creatures, on the other hand, are themselves divided into two. ‘Beasts’, and ‘Beings’. Beings are magical creatures who have the ability to learn, perceive, communicate, and most importantly, reason. Elves, dwarfs, and even humans fall into this category. Beasts, on the other hand, are magical creatures who are unable to reason, primarily being driven on ‘instinct’.

While biology was indeed interesting, the truly interesting thing is, obviously, magic. The elemental magic I learn here is known as “Latinate magic.” Apparently, there are many different kinds of magic in this world, with many of them having extremely different methods and results. The only thing linking them all together is mana. Frankly, I don’t fully understand, but it makes sense, I suppose? Anyway, my wind magic training is going well. Latinate magic is activated through chants, and it either creates or summons the element from your surroundings. Once I create or summon it, it is under my control, to be shaped by my will. Apparently, the more convoluted the task is, the more difficult it becomes to control the element properly. Personally, I haven’t really faced much of a problem with that, though. It might have something to do with the Emperor of the Wind’s blessing, who knows?

“-ciel! MARCIEL!!” Elder Teril’s shouts brought me back to reality. “What are you doing, child? Why are you not listening?”
“I’m sorry, Elder.” That was rather rude of me, so I decided to apologize quickly.

“Well, listen here. Tomorrow, some of us are going to Mount Silvine. We will be visiting the village of the Mountain Elves there. Would you like to follow?”

“Certainly!” I replied nearly instantly. Snow! Snowmen! Snow! Snow Angels! Snow! Snowballs!! The wonders of winter awaits me!

Cold. It’s really cold. I’m wearing the woollen coat but it’s still so cold! Why does the mountain have to be so cold??

About a day has passed since we left the village. Surprisingly, the Emperor of the Wind was there to see us off. We left on a carriage, and after a day’s journey we had camped out yesterday. Back then, when I had seen the mountain from afar, I could hardly have guessed just how cold it really was. Now that we are going up the mountain, the cold has been creeping closer and closer in. The carriage is still warm thanks to the blankets and the like, but it was not a good idea to leave the carriage when we had stopped to give the horses a drink. I could hardly stand outside, and jumped back in nearly immediately. Markus, who was with us, saw this and gave me a blanket too, to help me warm up. It might just have been better to warn me not to leave, but I am thankful nonetheless.

Traveling for a few hours more has led us to our destination. What was ahead of me could only be described as a “Winter Wonderland”. The entirety of the village was covered in snow. Crystalline snowflakes reflected light, making a few trees look like they were glittering. A cheerful tone from the nearby birds, northern cardinals, filled the air with a feeling of wonder. The lush greens of our village, and now this winter wonderland as well, could this also be a land blessed by the spirits? I would certainly believe it to be so. As I left the carriage, as opposed to the biting cold from before, I now felt a strange yet welcoming warmth, pulling me closer to the village. There, by the entrance, stood a group of elves welcoming us, ushering us into the village they so dearly cherish.

Thank you, once again for reading. Please do let me know your thoughts. Marciel finally getting a taste of what's out there, hmm...

It took 10 days coz I kept thinking about what would follow, not really being able to concentrate. One thing is that since I intend to timeskip very soon, I'll now have to start with a much better narration.

Another thing of note is that my little poems at the start of the chapter are getting really hard to come up with. If they seem sloppily done, I'm sorry, feel free to send a wake-up slap over. :D

Also, I'm really starved for attention reactions, so please do state your thoughts. Thank you once again! Have a wonderful day and I hope you keep enjoying! ^^

His walk did lasted until just before dinner, when he returned to the dorms.

Dinner at the Academy is a very solemn thing. Unlike the usual breakfast or lunch, dinners are held inside the hall. Sombre music gives a serious atmosphere to the gathering, and the served foods are luxurious, but not grand by a long shot.

The day's discussions seems to have resonated with this atmosphere, since the present situation felt like floating in a freezing lake. The silence between pieces seemed to posses so much pressure it drove needles into the attendees. Besides the music, the entire hall was nearly completely noiseless.

The one to break this blizzard-like silence was none other than Principal Sparmi. "First and second years, from tomorrow onwards, your normal classes will continue. The new situation is all the more reason for you to be extremely diligent in your work. I wish you all the luck in the world in your studies. For the first years, formation of your circles are, at the end of the day, a necessity. You will have the week, please decide among yourselves." This got a few chatters going, but the overall sombre attitude of the dinner lasted.
